‎As we left the room, Elijah's mother was waiting in the hallway.

‎"Elijah, we need to talk about…"

‎"Not now, Mom." He cut her off and held me close to him. "Breanna's exhausted. We'll talk tomorrow besides Grandfather wasn't to speak to you now."

‎"But…"

‎"Bye mom."

‎She looked like she wanted to protest but decided against it. She nodded and her eyes went to me with that same suspicious look.

‎I forced a polite smile and let Elijah guide me back to the elevator.

‎★★★★

‎The car ride home was silent and I stared out the window, not really looking at anything in particular.

‎Elijah's scent filled up the whole car as he drove. I could feel his gaze on me.

‎"You've been quiet," he finally said.

‎"I'm tired." I quickly said.

‎"You're a terrible liar."

‎ I turned to glare at him. "What's up with your grandfather asking about babies? Where did that come from??”

‎He kept his eyes on the road. "He's old-fashioned.. He doesn't mean any harm by it."

‎"Old-fashioned," I laughed. "The contract said nothing about birthing babies."

‎"Why do you sound so appalled by the idea of children?" he asked.

‎I scoffed. Was he really asking me that? "I'm not ready for children, and even if I wanted to have a child now, it definitely wouldn't be with someone like you."

‎He put his free hand on his chest like he was actually hurt. "Ouch."

‎ I wasn't amused.

‎"My grandfather believes in stability," he said seriously. "The same reason why he thinks I should be married before I turn thirty in order to inherit the company completely."

‎"And when do you turn thirty?"

‎"In three months."

‎So this whole thing was on a very tight timeline.

‎ I turned back to the window. "And in the meantime, I get to play happy housewife while your grandfather asks when we're giving him babies."

‎"I'll handle my grandfather. All you need to do is stay by my side and look pretty." He smirked, and I wanted to punch him.

‎"You're such an asshole."

‎"An asshole who's paying you very well," he reminded me. "Two million dollars, remember? Plus all your father's medical bills. That's what you signed up for."

‎I clenched my jaw. He was right. I had agreed to this. I'd signed the contract and I'd taken his money.

‎I didn't get to complain now.

‎"Just don't forget your end of the bargain," he continued. "One year. That's all I need from you. Play the part, don't embarrass me in public, and when it's over, you walk away with enough money."

‎"I won't back down," I said.

‎"Good." He glanced at me. "Because backing out now would be very expensive for you."

"What about your mom though. She doesn't seem to like me." I pointed out. The look bis mother gave me told me that she wasn't going to be as welcoming towards me as his grandfather was to me.

"Don't worry about my mother. I'm the one you're married to..not her."

‎I rolled my eyes and remained silent for the rest of the drive.

‎When we pulled up to what looked like his home, I had to physically stop my jaw from dropping.

‎He lived in a freaking penthouse!!! It was in one of those glass towers that I'd only ever seen in movies.

He even had a doorman. ‎"Mr. Washington," the doorman greeted with a slight bow. "Welcome home."

‎"Thanks, Marcus."

‎We took a private elevator that required a key card. I'd never seen one of these before.

‎The elevator opened directly into his penthouse. ‎The living room alone was bigger than my entire apartment. Everything looked so modern from the marble floors to the expensive-looking furniture.

‎Whoa. I could see the city through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

‎"This is..." I said looking all around the room like a kid in a candy store.

‎"Home," Elijah finished, shrugging off his suit.

‎"Your things have already been delivered," he said, walking toward what I assumed was the kitchen. "They should be in your room."

‎"My room?"

‎"The guest room, it's down the hall." He loosened his tie, and I tried not to notice how the movement made his shoulders flex. "I'll give you the tour."

‎He led me through the penthouse, pointing things out as we went.

‎"I don't really cook so someone comes in to prep meals and stock the fridge. They also handle laundry and cleaning."

‎"There's an indoor pool on the lower level and an outdoor one on the terrace," he continued. "Gym is down there too if you use it. The H

home office is off-limits unless I invite you in."

‎I nodded.

‎He stopped in front of a door. "This is you."

‎He opened it, and I stepped inside.

‎The guest room was bigger than my bedroom at home. The was a king sized bed with the softest looking sheets and my own bathroom.

‎I walked into it the bathroom and almost gasped. It was so magnificent. I'd never seen anything like it before. It even had a jacuzzi.

‎"Holy shit," I muttered.

‎"Is it acceptable?" Elijah asked.

‎"It's... fine," I said, trying to sound unimpressed even though I was completely blown away.

"Um.. where's your room?" I asked.

"It's directly across yours." He gestured to the door opposite mine. Why was his room so close to mine?

‎"Someone will be here at seven tomorrow to make breakfast," he continued. "But there's some food downstairs that you can eat for the night.”

‎"Someone makes your breakfast?" I asked.

‎"Every morning."

‎He couldn't even make his own breakfast. Such a spoiled brat.

‎“Thanks but I'm not hungry.” I said.

‎He didn't even argue he just simply nodded and closed the door giving me privacy and I finally let myself breathe.

‎I walked over to the closet and found all my clothes already unpacked and hung up. Someone had even organized them by color.

‎This was insane. All of it.

  • Married To My Ex's Billionaire Boss    FOURTEEN

“What does your mother want?” I asked. My impression of his mother was decent at least. I mean she was surprised, even distraught at him announcing that he was suddenly married and hadn't told or invited anyone. She wanted him to get married to Victoria and I was the strange woman he brought to them.“Look, my mother is…” He sighed. “That version of her you saw then, that's not really her. That's her on her best behavior. She's a lot and very spontaneous.” He said. “We're meeting her at her country club.”[AT THE COUNTRY CLUB]I felt completely out of place the moment we pulled up to the imposing white colonial building. The staff member opened the door for us like we were royalty."Mr. Washington, Mrs. Washington," A man greeted us. "Your mother is waiting in the Garden Terrace.”His mother was seated at table filled with drinks and beside her was that woman from the dinner. Madison I think. His sister. She looked like she'd just stepped out of a fashion magazine in a white sundres

I stood at the bathroom sink and stared at my reflection. What the hell was wrong with me?Getting jealous over a man I barely knew. A man I was only married to because of a contract..Elijah's reflection appeared in the mirror behind mine. He stepped inside and locked the door with a soft click."What are you doing?" My voice came out shakier than I wanted."You ran off." He moved closer, and I watched him approach in the mirror. "Why?""I told you. I-i-i needed the restroom." I hated that I stuttered. It made me feel weak. "Liar."I turned around to face him and my back hit the sink. "Can you stop calling me that?""Then stop lying." He moved closer to me. I could smell his cologne and see the flecks of gold in his eyes. I instantly got deja vu from last night. "You were jealous.""I wasn't—"He placed one hand on the counter beside me and I was trapped. "You were jealous, Breanna just admit it.""Fine." I said. "Yes, I was jealous.. happy now?"He held my gaze and I swallowed nerv

"Where are we going?" I asked as Elijah pulled out of the hospital parking lot. "Lunch." He responded. "Lunch?" "You haven't eaten all day." He glanced at me. "And you look like you need a distraction." He wasn't entirely wrong. My mind was still on what dad had said. I still didn't know how to figure this out but what I definitely knew was that I wasn't losing my mother's bakery. "I'm not really hungry." Even though I was lying. "You will be." Twenty minutes later, we pulled up to what looked like an ordinary building that looked like it was hidden on the quiet street. Was this even a restaurant. There was no sign of indication that there was a restaurant anywhere. "This is a restaurant?" I asked skeptically. "The best one in the city." Elijah got out and came around to open my door. "You just have to know where to find it." A man in a black suit opened the door before we even reached it. "Mr. Washington and his lady" he bowed slightly. "Welcome back, you

Elijah's hand rested on the small of my back as we walked through the corridors. Even that small touch made my stomach flutter. We reached the receptionist desk and was immediately escorted to Dad's private room.He looked so much smaller in that hospital bed than I remembered. Now he looked fragile, with tubes and monitors attached to him. His eyes lit up when he saw me, and that familiar warm smile spread across his face."Bree-bug," he said, using the nickname he'd called me since I was five. "You came.""Of course I did." I crossed to his bed and hugged him carefully, mindful of the IV. "How are you feeling?”"Much better. This room is fantastic but the food here is horrible though." He looked past me to Elijah. "Dad, this is—" I gestured to Elijah. "Logan!" My father gave him a big smile. "Good to see you, son. Though you look a bit different.. did you get taller?"Oh god."Dad, this isn't Logan." This was embarrassing. "I know I've been out of it but I'd recognize my son-in

At exactly one o'clock, I came downstairs to find Elijah waiting. He had changed into dark jeans and a black button-up, the sleeves rolled to his elbows. He looked good. Too good."Ready?" he asked. It seemed he wanted to say something but he stopped himself which I felt relieved by. Whatever he wanted to say, I didn't want to hear it. I nodded as we made our way out the house and into his luxury car. Elijah hadn't said a word since we left the penthouse, his hands gripped the steering wheel like it had personally offended him.Taking advantage of the silence, I pulled out my phone and checked the texts from the hospital. The surgery had been successful and dad was doing really well and recovering faster than expected.I glanced at Elijah who looked tense. His shoulders were quite rigid like he was holding in his breath. There was something definitely bothering him, but I didn't know him well enough to ask what.‎ We pulled into the hospital parking lot, but before I could even unb

"Wait."He pulled back so abruptly, breathing hard. His eyes were filled with lust and a flash of panic crossed his face. "Wait," he repeated, pulling himself away from me. I lay there in confusion but I could still feel his touch on my body. My heart was racing and my skin was on fire. "I'm sorry." He ran a hand through his hair, refusing to look at me. "We shouldn't be doing this."At that moment I felt so embarrassed. I wished there was a hole I could crawl into. He pulled me up gently from the bed and before I could say anything he kissed my forehead softly. "See you tomorrow," he said quietly. "Have a good night." Then he walked out and closed the door behind him without even looking back.I stared at the closed door. My emotions were literally all over the place. I looked all over the room trying to make sense of what the fuck just happened. I fell back onto the massive bed and stared at that ridiculously high ceiling. This man was going to drive me insane.★★★★★I woke up
