Arthur stared down at her. The silence stretched for ten seconds, twenty, thirty.

Evelyn could hear the distant, muffled thud of the bass from the ballroom gala, a ticking clock counting down the minutes until her scheduled engagement.

Then, slowly, a low, dark chuckle rumbled in Arthur’s chest. It wasn't a sound of kindness–it was the sound of a predator recognizing another predator.

“You are absolutely out of your mind, Evelyn King,” he murmured, his eyes glittering with a sudden, dangerous intensity.

“You are proposing a social scandal that will rock the entire continent. The press will tear you to pieces. High society will call you a gold-digger, a whore, a monster.”

“Let them,” Evelyn said, her face a mask of cold, beautiful resolve.

“I’ve already been to hell, Arthur. A little social gossip won't burn me.”

Arthur walked back to his desk, picked up a sleek, black fountain pen, and tapped it against his palm. He looked at her, really looked at her, measuring her worth not as a woman, but as an ally in a war he had been fighting alone for ten years.

“There are rules to my house, Evelyn,” he said, his tone suddenly turning businesslike, sharp, and demanding.

“If we do this, it is a marriage in name and contract only until I verify every single word you’ve told me tonight. You will live under my roof. You will answer to me. You will not take a single step against Julian without my approval.”

“Deal,” Evelyn said without a second of hesitation.

“Julian’s announcement is in exactly four minutes…”Arthur said, looking at his watch, then looking back at her, “…are you ready to watch the world burn, Miss King?”

Evelyn offered him her hand, her smile sharp enough to draw blood.

“I’ll bring the matches, Mr. Vance.”

Guests packed the grand ballroom to capacity. Thousands of white orchids decorated the stage at the front of the room, and a massive projection screen displayed a looping, elegant gold monogram of 'J & E.'

Julian stood near the microphone, adjusting the cuffs of his bespoke tuxedo, a bright, triumphant smile plastered across his face.

Chloe stood off-stage, her hands clasped together, her eyes shining with anticipation, like a parasite about to secure its host.

“Ladies and gentlemen, members of the board, and distinguished guests,” Julian’s voice echoed through the high-end sound system, drawing a warm, polite round of applause from the crowd.

“Thank you all for joining us tonight at the Vance Summer Gala. Tonight is a monumental evening for the Vance global empire, not just because of our record-breaking quarterly earnings, but because of a beautiful, personal milestone.”

Julian turned his head, looking toward the side entrance where he expected Evelyn to appear.

“Tonight, I have the immense honor of announcing a union that will bind two great families together. A union of shared values, shared futures, and a deep, enduring love. I want to invite my beautiful fiancée, Miss Evelyn King, to join me on stage.”

The crowd began applauding, turning toward the back of the room.

The heavy double doors of the ballroom did not open for Evelyn alone.

Instead, the doors swung wide, and the applause in the room faltered, dying out in a staggered, confused wave as two tall figures walked into the chandelier’s light.

Evelyn walked with her head held high, her hand resting firmly, possessively, in the crook of Arthur Vance’s arm.

The contrast was staggering. Julian looked like a boy in dress-up compared to his father's immense, suffocating presence. Evelyn’s emerald dress seemed to glow under the lights, her posture commanding, her face serene and utterly untouchable.

A collective whisper rippled through the ballroom, a rising tide of shock and confusion.

“Is that... Arthur Vance?”

“Why is she holding his arm?”

“What is going on?”

Julian’s smile froze on his face. His hand tightened on the microphone, the knuckles turning stark white. He took a step forward, eyes darting between Evelyn and his father, chest heaving with volatile panic.

“Evelyn?” Julian muttered into the live microphone, confusion pouring into his voice.

“What... Father? What are you doing?”

Arthur and Evelyn did not stop until they reached the stage’s base. Arthur did not ascend the stairs–he stood at the bottom, looking up at Julian as if he were an annoying insect blocking the way.

“Julian,” Arthur’s deep, gravelly voice cut through the whispers of the room, carrying terrifying authority without a microphone.

“Step down from the stage.”

“Father, I’m in the middle of announcing my engagement!” Julian hissed, face flushing deep red as he looked around at the hundreds of staring guests and flashing media cameras.

“Evelyn, get up here. What kind of joke is this?”

Evelyn stepped forward, leaving Arthur’s side briefly to stand at the bottom of the stage stairs, looking up at the man who had murdered her in another life. She felt no fear. She felt no sorrow. She only felt a cold, intoxicating rush of power.

“There is no joke, Julian,” Evelyn said, her voice clear, calm, and audible to the front rows.

“There has simply been a misunderstanding. You are correct that a union is being announced tonight between the King family and the Vance family.”

She paused, turning her head slightly to look at Arthur, who gave her a single, slow nod of approval.

“But I am not your fiancée.”

Julian gasped, backing a step on the stage. “What the hell are you talking about? We’ve been dating for two years! We planned this tonight!”

In the background, Chloe’s face had gone pale. Her mouth was slightly open as she clutched her pearl necklace, eyes darting toward the media cameras recording every second of this disaster.

Evelyn smiled, a beautiful, devastating expression that made Julian’s stomach drop.

“Two hours ago, Julian, your father, and I signed a formal marriage contract at the city registry,” Evelyn announced, her words falling like a nuclear bomb into high society.

“The King family trust and the Vance global patriarch faction have officially merged.”

She turned, gracefully ascending the first few steps of the stage, not to join Julian but to look down at him from a place of absolute authority.

“I am not your fiancée, Julian,” Evelyn whispered, just loud enough for the microphone to catch.

“I am your stepmother.”

The ballroom erupted into chaos.

Flashbulbs blazed in a frantic, blinding barrage.

Guests stood abruptly from their tables, whispering loudly, pointing, faces twisted with horror, shock, and gleeful salaciousness.

The board members were already on their phones, voices frantic as they watched the Vance corporate structure shatter and reform in a single sentence.

Julian stared at her, eyes wide, bloodshot, burning with unbridled fury. He looked like a man who had just watched his last hope vanish in smoke.

“You... you bitch!” Julian roared, throwing the microphone to the ground with feedback screeching.

He lunged at Evelyn, hands reaching out, completely lost in the terrifying realization that he had just lost his inheritance, his future, and his pride.

“You married him for the money! You’re trying to steal what’s mine! I’ll kill you–”

He didn't even cross the stage.

Before Julian could grab her, a massive grip seized him by the throat.

Arthur Vance moved with speed beyond his size. He hoisted Julian off the ground by his collar, his gray eyes flashing with lethal violence that silenced everyone. Julian choked, legs dangling, face turning purple as he stared into the face of the man who had ruled his life with fear.

“Watch your mouth, boy,” Arthur growled, his low, vibrating voice promising death.

“You’re speaking to my wife. You’re speaking to the family’s matriarch. If you raise your voice to her again, I won’t just take away your title–I’ll make sure you spend the rest of your miserable life in a cell.”

Arthur threw Julian aside like trash. Julian hit the stage floor hard, coughing violently, clutching his chest as he rolled to his side.

Arthur gave no more attention. Turning to Evelyn, his expression softened into a mask of cold, polite chivalry, and he offered her his hand.

“Shall we leave, Mrs. Vance?” he asked.

Evelyn placed her hand in his, her fingers steady, her heart soaring with the first taste of sweet, bloody revenge.

“Let’s go home, Arthur,” she replied.

Walking out of the ballroom side by side, amid the the cameras and horrified faces, Evelyn looked back one last time.

Julian knelt, staring at her with a hatred that could burn cities. Chloe stood frozen in the corner, trembling like a leaf.

The game has just begun, Julian, Evelyn thought as her green dress swept the marble floor like a banner of war.

And this time, I hold all the cards.

Back in the private war room on the eighty-eighth floor of Vance Global Tower, the room was a storm of flashing red light and mechanical activity.Evelyn stood directly before the wall, completely motionless as the red numbers reflected in her dark pupils."Mrs. Vance!" Murdock called out, his hands slamming against his desk. "The bank just issued Thomas Henderson a nine-hundred-million-dollar emergency margin call! He has forty-five minutes to deposit liquid cash, or they will begin liquidating his collateral shares!""Has he attempted to cover?" Evelyn asked, her voice completely calm."Yes!" a financial analyst shouted. "Thomas is using his family’s private reserve accounts to buy back HNDR shares on the open market to artificially push the price back up above thirty-eight dollars! He’s spent three hundred million in the last ten minutes!"Evelyn’s lips curved into a beautiful arc. The morning rain slammed against the floor-to-ceiling glass of the eighty-eighth floor in dark sheets.Inside the private suite of Vance Global Tower, the air was dead silent.Evelyn sat at the center of the table. On the glass surface before her lay a legal envelope bearing the red wax seal of the Supreme Court, Commercial Division."It was delivered twenty minutes ago," Murdock, Arthur’s chief financial strategist, said flatly, standing at the edge of the table, flanked by three senior financial analysts."Thomas Henderson spent a lot of cash to file this," Murdock continued, adjusting his glasses. "He is petitioning the court to place the King family's twenty percent voting block into temporary judicial receivership until your father’s medical capacity can be formally evaluated by an independent psychiatric board. It is a classic stall tactic. If he gets a temporary restraining order before Monday, the King vote is frozen."Evelyn did not touch the paper. She slowly leaned back in

Evelyn walked around the house, her heels clicking softly against the floor. She didn't look at Selene or Lily, but she felt their eyes burning into her back like hot irons. As her gaze swept over the archways, the subtle shifts in her childhood home became instantly clear. An antique grandfather clock that her father had imported was gone, replaced by a replica. A mirror along the gallery wall had been taken down, leaving dark, rectangular shadows on the wallpaper."Miss Evelyn..."A soft, trembling voice broke through the heavy silence. From the archway leading to the kitchen, Martha, her family's old housekeeper, stepped out. She looked exhausted. Her hands folded tightly over her apron, eyes filled with tears the moment she saw Evelyn standing under the chandelier."Martha," Evelyn said, her cold demeanor softening for a second. She reached out, placing her hand over the woman's trembling knuckles."How... How have you been, child?”She cast a fearful glance toward Selene. "The re

The second the door clicked, the tears vanished from Chloe’s eyes as if they had never existed. The trembling curve of her mouth flattened into a hard, vicious snarl. Her face twisted into an expression of pure malice. She slammed both palms flat against the vanity, her knuckles turning white as she stared at her own reflection."You arrogant bitch!”She reached down, her nails digging into the leather of her clutch to pull out her phone. Her hands vibrating with an explosive rage. She tapped the screen, opening a hidden communication log."Enjoy the while you can, Evelyn," Chloe whispered into the screen, her mouth curling back into a deadly smile.Back in the main pavilion of the Lounge, Evelyn walked toward the central circular booth. The ladies instantly stopped whispering the moment her shadow fell across the table. She did not rush. Her heels struck the floor with a loud click, like the ticking of a countdown clock. Without asking for permission, she elegantly took her seat at the table, her movements graceful and utterly queenly. As she sat under the direct light of the pavilion, the comparison between the two women was cruel. The ping from her phone carried a rhythmic vibration that pulsed against the desk in Evelyn’s new executive suite. She let the screen flash three times, the bright white banner cutting through the office's dim, elegant lighting. Evelyn slowly leaned back in her chair, her eyes narrowing as she stared at the screen. A cold ache rippled through her chest—not of fear, but of an old disgust. She remembered this invitation. In her previous life, this exact get-together had been the staging ground for her absolute humiliation. In that life, Julian had walked into the dressing room of their penthouse three hours before the event, holding a wrapped white box. He had kissed her forehead with that sweet warmth she had once mistaken for love, telling her he had bought her a dress, one he had carefully handpicked. As his wife, she had trusted him. She had worn it proudly, ignoring the way the lace scratched the skin of her collarbone, and the way the zipper caught against the lining. When she h
