The drive to Bowen’s Hospital took twelve minutes. Julian drove fast. His mind was still spunning in circles.

At 11:41 AM, Julian pushed open the glass entrance doors of the hospital. The lobby was bright and clean. It smelled strong of bleach and rubbing alcohol. Long yellow and green lines ran along the white tile floor. They led visitors to different departments.

Julian ignored the front desk. He turned left. He followed a green line toward the service elevators and the lower maintenance

The hallway was empty now. The footsteps of the medical team inside Room 402 had settled into a quiet beat, punctuated only by the steady beep of a heart monitor. Arthur did not move a single muscle for a long time. His eyes remained fixed on the brass handle of the stairwell door where Julian had vanished moments before.Down inside the stairwell, Julian moved quickly. His left hand was shoved deep inside his suit jacket, his fingers pressed flat against the envelope. When Julian reached the ground floor, he pushed through the door and walked straight across the main hospital lobby. He kept his head low, his chin tucked into his coat collar, ignoring the nurses and visitors moving past him. He pushed open the main glass exit doors and stepped out into the midday air.Julian walked two blocks down the avenue before stopping near the edge of a quiet side street. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out his phone. He tapped on a saved number and brought the phone up to his ear.Th

A physician with thin gold spectacles was standing in the doorway, writing rapidly on a digital tablet while speaking to a nurse.Arthur Vance stood in the middle of the hallway. He looked like a caged monster. He was pacing back and forth in front of the closed doors. His hands were clenching and unclenching into massive fists at his sides.Every time a nurse opened the door, Arthur would

  • Married To My Husband’s Father    Chapter 46: What Happened to Evelyn?

Julian’s mind began to spin into a terrifying, chaotic hurricane of thoughts, pieces of his past crashing into each other with violent force. He already knew he wasn't Arthur's biological son, but his late mother, Eleanor Vance, had made him believe Thomas Henderson was his real father. When Eleanor was young, before she ever married into the Vance family, she had been involved with Thomas Henderson. Julian had lived his whole life believing that lie. He had loathed Arthur Vance because he believed Arthur was the arrogant rich tyrant who had stolen his mother from his real father, Thomas Henderson. But now... the paper in his hands declared the absolute truth. Thomas Henderson was not his father. Julian leaned his back flat against the lockers, sliding down two inches until his knees were bent. His throat felt tight, dry, and completely out of air. If Thomas Henderson was not his father... then who was he? Why had Eleanor lied to him? A sudden, wild idea bloomed deep inside

He pushed the fire door open. His shoes made a loud sound on the way down into the basement. The air got cooler with each step down. At the bottom of the stairs, a metal door had a small blue sign. [EMPLOYEE LOCKERS / MAINTENANCE STAFF ONLY.] Julian stood in front of the door. He checked his watch. 11:44 AM. He gripped the handle, pushed the door open, and stepped into the quiet room. The room was silent except for the steady hum of an

A black armored SUV cut through the midday traffic with its red and blue lights flashing behind the front grille. The siren roared continuously making other vehicles clear a path on the wet pavement.Inside the rear cabin, the air was heavy with the sharp smell of burnt plastic and chemical dust.Arthur Vance sat on the wide leather seat, his body bent forward. His right hand held Evelyn’s fingers so tightly that his knuckles were pale and hard. With his left hand, he held a wet white cloth against her forehead, gently wiping away the thin layer of black soot that had settled near her hairline.Evelyn lay back against the leather headrest. Her eyes were wide, staring up at the ceiling of the car. Her chest rose and fell in short, fast shallow breaths. Every few seconds, her fingers twitched inside Arthur’s large palm, her short nails digging into his skin."Evelyn," Arthur said. He bent his head down until his chin almost touched her shoulder. "Look at me. Look right at my eyes."Eve

Chloe remained seated on the wooden bench. She lifted her paper cup, taking a slow, calm sip of her hot tea as she watched Lily’s retreating back disappear down the stone stairs of the subway. The soft, warm smile slowly dissolved from Chloe’s face, leaving behind a cold, expressionless mask. She leaned back against the bench, her eyes looking up at the towering glass buildings of Midtown, waiting patiently for the storm to break. The following day, the morning sun hit the eighty-eighth floor of Vance Global Tower with blinding light. Inside the executive suite, the air was warm. The glass windows offered an incredible view of the River, where massive cargo ships moved slowly through the water. Evelyn sat behind her large desk. Knock. Knock. The doors opened, and Sarah, her secretary, stepped into the room holding a small stack of morning mail. "Good morning, Mrs. Vance," Sarah said politely, stepping across the carpet. "The morning trade briefs are ready for your review. An
