The limousine finally slowed down, turning off the coastal highway and approaching a massive set of wrought-iron gates that cut into the sheer face of a cliffside hill.

The gates were monolithic, easily twenty feet high, bearing the ancient crest of the Vance family, a stylized obsidian falcon holding a broken crown.

As the vehicle drew closer, a sophisticated biometric scanner hummed to life, a brief flash of blue light spread across the cabin interior before the iron gates ground open with a heavy, mechanical groan.

Evelyn looked out the window as they drove up the long, winding driveway.

In her past life, Julian had never brought her here. Not once. He always claimed the ancestral manor was too depressing. Instead, Julian kept her in an ultra-modern penthouse in the heart of the city’s financial district.

At the time, Evelyn thought it was romantic.

Now, with the harsh clarity of hindsight, she saw that the penthouse was a fishbowl. It was a gilded cage with glass walls, completely monitored by Julian’s security team, meant to keep her isolated from the true power of the Vance family while keeping her visible as a trophy to high society.

This place was where the real power resided.

The limousine stopped beneath a massive stone entrance. The door was opened instantly by a tall, older man dressed in a flawless black morning coat.

“Welcome home, Mr. Vance,” the butler said, his voice a low, measured murmur. Then, his eyes shifted to Evelyn.

For a split second, his impeccable professional mask slipped, a look of profound, bewildered shock flashing across his face before he quickly regained composure.

“And... welcome, Madam.”

Evelyn stepped out of the car, the cold night air hitting her bare back. She stood tall, adjusting the silk train of her gown as the wind caught her hair.

“Thank you,” Evelyn said, her tone cool and authoritative.

“I believe my personal belongings were transferred from the King estate two hours ago. Have they arrived?”

Yes, Madam,” the butler replied, bowing his head slightly lower than usual. “Mr. Vance’s personal assistants oversaw the transfer. The staff placed everything in the eastern wing.”

Arthur stepped out of the vehicle behind her, tossing his overcoat to the butler without looking at him.

“Gather the household staff in the morning, Thomas. Six o'clock sharp. I want the security protocols updated immediately. Mrs. Vance’s biometric profile is to be given Tier-1 clearance across the entire estate. If my son attempts to set foot on this property, he is to be detained and turned over to local authorities for trespassing. Is that understood?"

Thomas’s eyes widened slightly. “Perfectly, sir.”

“Good. Dismissed for the night.”

Arthur turned to Evelyn, his face unreadable in the dim light of the portico. “Follow me, Evelyn. Let me show you where you will be sleeping.”

Evelyn followed Arthur up a sweeping staircase made of wrought iron. The house lacks complete warmth. It wasn't a home, it was a fortress built to withstand a siege.

They walked deep into the eastern wing, passing down a long corridor lined with heavy tapestries that muted their footsteps.

Finally, Arthur stopped in front of a massive set of double mahogany doors. He pushed them open, revealing a suite larger than Evelyn’s entire childhood home.

The room was stunning, yet stark.

A massive king-sized bed with dark grey silk sheets sat against a feature wall. A roaring fire crackled in a massive stone fireplace, casting long, dancing shadows across a pair of velvet armchairs and a sleek, modern desk overlooking the dark ocean cliffs outside.

Through an open archway, Evelyn could see a luxurious bathroom finished in white luxurious marble and a walk-in wardrobe where her dresses hung.

“This is the Grand Master Suite,” Arthur said, stepping into the room and walking toward the fireplace.

“It has its own private balcony, an independent climate control system, and a reinforced panic room hidden behind the wardrobe.”

Evelyn walked over to the desk, her fingers brushing across the smooth wood.

“It’s beautiful, Arthur. Thank you.”

“Do not thank me yet,” Arthur replied coldly.

He moved toward a heavy, unremarkable door on the far side of the room, near the bed. He grasped the brass knob and turned it, pulling the door open.

Evelyn peeked through the opening and felt her breath hitch.

The door led directly into another master suite, one that reeked heavily of cedarwood, scotch, and leather.

She saw a huge desk covered with stacks of legal documents, a collection of high-end surveillance monitors glowing faintly in the dark, and a minimalist bed.

It was Arthur’s private quarters.

Arthur stood in the doorway, his tall frame completely blocking the light from his room. He looked down at her, his expression a chilling mix of absolute dominance and clinical detachment.

“This door remains unlocked from my side at all times,” Arthur stated, his voice dropping into a low growl that sent a shiver straight down Evelyn’s spine.

“You wanted to play in the big leagues, Evelyn. You wanted to marry the patriarch. This is the reality of that choice.”

He took a slow step into her room, his shadow stretching across the grand bed.

“You are safe from Julian here, Evelyn. His influence can't reach you inside these walls. He can't harm, threaten, or steal your family's future. But don't mistake this house for a sanctuary. It's a war room, and you are my ally, not my guest.”

He stopped just inches away from her, his eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that felt like a physical weight.

“Tomorrow morning, the real battle begins. The stock market will open, the board will demand answers, and Julian will try to tear this world apart to get to you. I expect you to be ready. I expect you to stand by my side without flinching, without regret, and without fear.”

Evelyn looked at the connecting door, then back at the man who held her future in his hands. The naivety of her past life was entirely gone, burned away by the fire of her own betrayal. She knew exactly what she had signed up for. She hadn't married a savior–she had made a pact with a demon to destroy a monster.

She took a step forward, closing the final inch of the distance between them. She reached out, resting her hands firmly against the crisp linen of his shirt, right over his slow, steady heartbeat.

“I didn't marry you looking for a hiding place, Arthur,” Evelyn whispered, her eyes flashing with a cold, beautiful fire that mirrored his own.

“I married you, looking for a weapon. I’ll see you at six o'clock sharp.”

Arthur looked down at her hand on his chest, a sudden, dark curiosity flickering in his eyes before he masked it with his usual icy composure.

He gave her a single, slow nod, stepped back into his room, and closed the connecting door with a quiet, decisive click.

Evelyn stood alone in the grand suite, the crackle of the fireplace the only sound breaking the silence of the night. She walked over to the window, looking out at the dark, roiling ocean crashing against the jagged cliffs below.

The first move on the chessboard had been played. Julian was bleeding, Arthur was watching, and she was finally in a position to strike.

She smiled into the dark, a cold, lethal expression on her face.

Sleep well tonight, Julian, she thought. Because tomorrow, your new mother takes everything.

… Saturday evening arrived under a clear, dark canopy of stars The Grand Horizon Hotel stood like a glowing palace in the heart of Victoria Island. Hundreds of bright spotlights cut through the night sky, illuminating the sprawling glass entrance and the long red carpet that stretched fifty yards from the main drop-off lane to the entrance of the ballroom. Dozens of luxury vehicles arrived one after the other, their engines idling as security guards in suits managed the flowing crowd. Along both sides of the red carpet, metal barricades held back a surging wall of over two hundred reporters, photographers, and camera crews. Camera flashes exploded nonstop as reporters called out to the arriving guests. A sleek silver Maybach rolled smoothly to a stop at the head of the red carpet. A valet opened the rear door. The heavy question hung in the air of the office like a striking iron bell.Arthur did not answer immediately. He stared at her, his hands resting against his desk. For several seconds, neither of them spoke. The quiet hum of the office air conditioner was the only sound in the room. After a long moment, Arthur slowly stood up from his chair. He walked around the side of his desk until he was standing right in front of her. He reached out, his broad hand gently taking hold of her chin, his thumb resting softly against her jawline."Do not waste your thoughts on Julian’s, Mrs Vance," Arthur said softly, his eyes searching hers with deep, fierce protection. "He is an exile from this house now. His blood does not matter. His claims do not matter. Let the dead past stay buried where it belongs."Evelyn did not pull her chin away from his warm touch.
