NICOLE

Xavier’s growl shook the town hall windows.

Every wolf in the room froze.

Not metaphorically. Not in a dramatic human way where everyone gasped and clutched pearls. They went still like prey that had heard something larger breathe in the dark.

I did not freeze.

I looked at Deena.

Her smooth brown skin looked warm under the ugly overhead lights, but her expression had gone flat in the way I knew meant she was one bad sentence from violence. Her big brown eyes were locked on the forged st

XAVIER Rowan Vale’s voice slid through my blood like a blade dipped in ice.Deena froze beneath me.For one second, I was still inside her, skin damp, heart still pounding from the way she had come apart around me. Her thighs were wrapped around my hips. Her hands were on my shoulders. The room smelled like sex, rain, blood, and silver. Then the black veins crawled past my wrist.I pulled out of her with a curse and rolled off the bed before I crushed her beneath me.“Xavier?”“Stay back.”The words came out too rough. Too close to a command. Her eyes sharpened immediately.Wrong fucking move. She sat up, beautiful and furious, sheets gathered against her chest, her smooth brown skin glowing warm in the low light. “Do not start that with me again.”The pain hit harder. Not in my hand.In my ribs. The wound split wider across my palm, opening like something beneath my skin had teeth. Silver smoke curled upward. The veins spread another inch, thin and black, threading toward my forearm

XAVIER “He stole them both.”Mace’s voice came through the comm in a wreck of static and fury. For one second, the hotel around me vanished. Not the screaming. Not the smoke. Not the shattered mirrors glittering like teeth across the Sovereign ballroom. Just meaning. Deena’s blood. My blood. Mixed because I had covered her wound with my own hand and taken the blade meant for my heart.Rowan had not missed. He had collected.Deena stood at my side, bandaged wrist held against her chest, her brown eyes fixed on my face because she felt the change in me through the bond.“What?” she asked.I did not answer quickly enough. Her expression sharpened. “Xavier.”I turned toward the emergency stairwell as Mace came through with Nicole, three wounded guests, and murder in his eyes. Nicole had one shoe, blood on the hem of her midnight-blue dress, and a knife still clenched in her hand.Deena moved toward her.I moved with her.Nicole saw Deena’s face and lifted one hand. “Not dead. Extremely p

MACE The corridor swallowed us and made a lie of distance. One second, Xavier was behind us with Deena, Miriam, and the ruined ballroom full of screaming wolves. The next, the service hallway stretched ahead like a throat lined in black glass.Emergency lights flickered red along the floor. The walls reflected us wrong—too tall, too thin, too delayed. Nicole’s reflection turned its head half a second after she did.My hand closed around her arm.She looked at my grip, then at my face. “If you say stay behind me, I’m going to develop a very personal relationship with that thigh knife you gave me.”“Stay close,” I said.“That is not better.”“It is accurate.”The comm in my ear spat static.“Mace?” Xavier’s voice came through broken and distant. “The corridor is moving.”“Confirmed,” I said, though I doubted he heard me.The line died.Nicole’s sharp humor vanished for three heartbeats. Her attention snapped back toward where the doorway had been, but the corridor behind us was gone. N

XAVIER She moved in front of the blade. For one impossible heartbeat, the world narrowed to Deena’s black-and-gold dress, her smooth brown skin, the flash of Wren silver at her throat, and death flying straight for the center of her chest.“No.”The word left me as a snarl. The gold circle around my legs tightened, black fire biting through the soles of my shoes and into bone. Old magic. Anchored magic. The kind designed to hold kings still while cowards took their shots.I did not move my feet.I moved everything else.My arm locked around Deena’s waist and yanked her back against me hard enough to steal her breath. The silver blade sliced through the air where she had been, cutting the edge of the blood-soaked silk wrapped around her wrist. Then I caught it with my bare hand.Silver drove into my palm.Pain detonated up my arm, white-hot and poisonous. The blade hissed against my skin, burning through flesh, muscle, and control. My wolf came awake with murder in its mouth.Deena ga

XAVIER Her blood scented the air before the first note finished.Fresh. Warm. Wren.Mine.The word tore through me with a violence I did not allow onto my face.Deena’s wrist had opened beneath the white bandage, a thin red line blooming through the fabric where the claim needle had marked her. The ballroom lights caught on it. So did every predator in the room.My wolf surged up hard enough to split bone.Kill Rowan.Kill anyone looking.Take her out of this room and bury the world behind us.I closed my hand around hers before a single drop could fall.Deena sucked in a breath, her big brown eyes snapping to mine. Pain moved through the bond, sharp and silver-edged, followed immediately by fury.Of course fury came second.Of course it did.“Deena,” I said, low enough that only she could hear. “We stop.”Her fingers tightened around mine. “No.”“You’re bleeding.”“I noticed.”“The floor—”“Then don’t let it hit the floor.”A dangerous silence spread around us. The orchestra held th

DEENA “Mrs. Evers,” Rowan Vale said softly. “I preferred the red.”The elevator held its breath. So did every wolf around me.Rowan looked exactly like the kind of man who had learned early that pretty things made excellent weapons. Lean build. Dark hair. Sharp jaw. Amber eyes with no warmth anywhere behind them. His black suit was immaculate, his champagne untouched, his smile almost gentle.Almost.Celeste stood beside him in white silk, silver-blonde hair shining under the elevator lights, looking like innocence with a murder budget.I glanced down at my black-and-gold dress, then back at Rowan.“That’s unfortunate,” I said. “I dressed for myself, not your fantasy life.”Nicole made a tiny noise behind me.Xavier’s hand settled at my lower back. Warm. Steady. Possessive, but not trapping. His silence was colder than any threat.Rowan’s attention dipped to where Xavier touched me. “How modern.”“Careful,” I said. “You’ll sprain something pretending that was clever.”My left dimple
