To them,She was still the unwanted one, and Ruby never bothered correcting them. Let them underestimate her, let them sneer.

Because the day they learned she was Doctor N, they'd latch on to her again and use her all over.

Ruby vowed that she would never let that happen. There was no way in hell she would sabotage the life she'd built with her own hands.

When Ruby finally went upstairs, she saw Isabel lounging on the sofa like a queen in a lavish gown, sifting through her jewelry.

In contrast, Ruby was dressed simply in her old jeans and a hoodie. But even then, her beauty was unrivaled.

Isabel's eyes narrowed, but she forced out a smile. Ruby, what are you doing here?

She got married today. Sheila jumped in before Ruby could even open her mouth.

Isabel looked surprised. So fast. Who's the guy? Is he better than Carter?

Sheila scoffed. As if you couldn't find anyone in New York with a better family name than Carter. Honestly, Izzie.

How could someone like Ruby find a decent guy? He's probably some broke nobody. If he was someone of Carter's stature, don't you think she would have brought him home?

A hint of jealousy colored Isabel's tone as she snorted.

I don't know about that. Ruby is beautiful. That's how she nearly seduced Carter before he met me.

Ruby scoffed internally. Nearly seduced. He had chased her like a lovesick baboon. She was tempted to reply, but decided it wasn't worth it.

But her mother would not shut up. What good is a pretty face? You can't put lipstick on a pig. She screeched.

With her background, the only person who'd marry her is some lowlife from God knows where. Only someone with your standing is worthy of marrying Mr. Knight.

Isabel smirked and picked out a pair of earrings. Ruby ignored them. She was used to their venom.

Her mind drifted back to the man on the marriage certificate, recalling his sharp features and that commanding aura.

There was no universe in which he looked like a broke nobody. But she couldn't be bothered to argue. She just wanted to get out of here as soon as she could.

Isabel stood up from her seat and twirled. She went to put on her high heels, but realized her dress was too tight to bend over comfortably.

She offered Ruby a small, helpless smile, as if on cue Sheila shoved Ruby forward.

You useless girl. Are you blind? Your sister needs help. Get over there and put her shoes on for her.

Ruby just stood there thinking, here we go again. She wondered if Sheila really thought she was still that naïve little girl who didn't know how to fight back.

She has hands. She can do it herself. She said coldly.

How dare you talk to your sister like that? Sheila shouted. This family raised you. The least you can do is help.

Listening to the commotion, Warren Anderson walked inside the room. What is all this shouting about? He asked, his brow furrowed.

Our special guest will be here any minute.

Isabel fell silent, playing the perfect innocent victim. Sheila, however, launched into a tirade.

It's this ungrateful brat.

She gets married today and suddenly thinks she's too good to respect her own mother.

Warren's gaze landed on Ruby, his frown deepening. Married? Why wouldn't you let the family arrange something?

Where's the certificate? Let me see it.

Caught off guard by this rare flicker of concern from her distant father, Ruby hesitated for a second before pulling the printout from her pocket.

Ignoring all the attention on Ruby, Isabel chimed in.

Who is this guest that has you so on edge?

Warren's chest puffed with pride. Owen Knight.

Ruby froze.

No, no, no. She thought. That was the mystery name on my marriage certificate.

Isabel frowned.

Who's Owen Knight? Is he a big deal or something?

Ruby listened closely. Now, she had connections across New York City, powerful ones, but even she had never heard the name Owen Knight.

That's not surprising. Warren explained. The man's a ghost. Even I've never met him. He's Carter Knight's youngest uncle.

Only twenty-eight and already the head of the Knight family.

Sheila's eyes lit up.

Then, wouldn't he be a better match for Izzie than Carter? The head of the family?

Warren snapped. What are you talking about? Mr. Knight is already married.

To me. Ruby almost screamed internally, but this wasn't the place to discuss what she had discovered.

Isabel and Sheila only knew how to exploit her, and she wouldn't give them yet another chance.

Sheila sighed, disappointed.

Who's his wife? She's even luckier than my Izzie.

Ruby's gaze shot to Warren, but he just shrugged.

I have no idea. From what I hear, they're both pretty private. He frowned, thinking aloud. I wonder why he's showing up today.

Of all days.

As New York's elite, the Knights far outranked the Andersons. Isabel's engagement to Carter was already a major social climb.

But for the head of the Knight family to attend a simple engagement party instead of saving his appearance for the actual wedding.

It didn't make sense.

Ruby's head was flooded with questions, all of them leading to one person.

Owen.

Warren turned to head downstairs. As he passed Ruby, he said casually, you haven't been home in a while.

Stay for a drink before you go.

Ruby nodded wordlessly. Her mind already made up.

She was staying.

And she was going to get answers.

Who the hell are you, Owen Knight?

And why are you my husband?

Natalia had always been the epitome of grace. It was almost impossible to imagine her ever getting physical with someone. But Isabel had crossed all lines of decency. This time, Isabel's head snapped to the side. She froze for a second, then glared at her mother, yelling, why are you hitting me? It's obviously Ruby, who's in the wrong. Here. Natalia's eyes were like a fiery lake. I told you to shut your mouth, stop pouring gasoline on the fire. Good God, this has gotten too intense. I'll go get Mr. Anderson. Julian murmured. He took the trembling Kara and led her out of the charge hallways. Her mother's slap hadn't been strong, but the sting of humiliation stayed with Isabel. Mom, is everything I do wrong in your eyes? I'm just trying to help Kara stand up for herself. I want Ruby to face what she's done. She screamed. And you're going to stop me from doing even that. Is Ruby, that perfect in your eyes, even when she's the other woman. The homewrecker. You still take h

  • Married To a Stranger    Chapter 132

Ruby was slightly intimidated by Julian and Natalia's scrutiny. They looked at her with a strange intensity, which only made her quicken her footsteps. Once I show them the certificate, hopefully these two will stop hounding me. She sighed. Herself. As she walked toward the lounge, Julian was still chattering away. So is your husband attending the event? If he is, you two should make a grand entrance later. That'll shut everyone up. Exactly. Natalia chimed in. That's just what Ruby was planning. Ruby. It tuned them out and pushed on the lounge door, but it didn't budge because it was locked from the inside. This was Matilda's private lounge that only Ruby and Owen had access to, who could possibly be in here. The thought had barely formed. When the lock clicked, the door swung open and Isabel stepped out. Her eyebrows shot up when she saw them. Mom, Ruby, what are you two doing here? Ruby arched a brow right back at her. Natalia explained, Ruby's bag is in there. We

  • Married To a Stranger    Chapter 131

Natalia hadn't heard her deceased mother's name in years. Narissa Norton was nothing short of a legend back in Boston. But in New York City, no one knew of her greatness. Yes, I have a photo of your mother in my collection. Jonah confirmed, excitedly. At that, Natalia's eyes lit up. Oh my goodness. I can't believe it. When the photos are restored, you have to show them to me. Jonah looked surprised. Natalia, are you saying you don't have any photos of her? Natalia shook her head with a sigh. Before I moved to New York, there was a fire at our house. All the photos were destroyed. A nostalgic look filled her eyes. My health has been poor for years, and I've been sick so often. It's been over 20 years. I've almost forgotten what my own mother looked like. Hearing this, Jonah sighed sympathetically. I remember hearing about that back then. Such a shame. But how did she pass away? She was only in her forties, wasn't she still so young? Ruby finally understood this wa

  • Married To a Stranger    Chapter 129

Matilda's request for a promise utterly took Ruby aback. It was not the most demanding request. It was the least she could expect from her grandson's partner to stay with him till the very end. Ruby's life with Owen started on a strange note, but soon enough, they found themselves in an intangible bind. It was not expressed. But the weirdly attached couple felt it over time, their bond had gotten stronger. Ruby wasn't sure about Owen's feelings for her. But she had stood by her through thick and thin. She had not gotten the kind of response from him that would give her the confidence. But deep down. Something in her had already been lit. A tiny spark that gave her hope, even if she didn't know it yet. And without any hesitation, her hands filled Matilda's. I promise, grandma, she said. Matilda's face broke into a relieved smile. Thank you, sweetie. She said, you do

  • Married To a Stranger    Chapter 130

The Knight House was already buzzing. Bright and early. When Ruby came downstairs, she found Owen lounging on the living room sofa, a rare sight for this time. Time of day, she stretched, strolled over and arched an eyebrow. Playing hooky. She smirked. She'd just woken up and her face was fresh and glowing. Even without makeup. Her skin was clear, her lips pink and pristine. Even in her pajamas. She looked radiant. Owen glanced up from his phone, his eyes instantly growing soft. Morning, I have a meeting at ten. He informed, then a few things to take care of around three. I'll be back for the party tonight. Ruby nodded. So why are you still here? Owen cleared his throat and rose to his feet, his cheeks flushing faintly. Grandma wants us to try on our outfits. Ruby blinked, not understanding his reaction. Huh? He closed the distance between them, gently taking her h

By the time Isabel finished speaking, she had already dialed the number. She held the phone up, her smile smug, as if the truth was finally about to spill. It was the time of reckoning. But as fate would have it, it was the number Ruby no longer had in use. Ruby had several phone numbers. One was public, the others were private. She had one for Dr. N, one for research work, and a few more for specific uses.Eventually, Ruby lost track of them and decided to keep them all turned off. It gave her a sense of calm amid the otherwise frantic life she had lived. It grew on her, and soon enough, she had found herself away from the life of constant phone calls. If something really came up, she would receive an email instead. This was the way she had worked. The moment Isabel dialed it, she connected to a recorded voice on the other end, informing her that the number had been turned off.Ruby lifted an eyebrow. That's it. That was your pl
