The files arrived at noon.

Peter carried them up in a flat leather folder and set it on the writing desk in the small sitting room with the care of a man handling something that might break, or accuse him. He did not linger. Mrs. Turner had told the staff that the new Mrs. Cole was not to be crowded, and the staff, whatever they privately believed, obeyed the housekeeper more readily than they obeyed the name on the marriage certificate.

Leah waited until the door closed before she opened the f

  • Married in Her Name   Chapter 302: Women Declared Unreliable

Elaine places the three evaluations side by side the next morning. Not summaries. Not Patricia’s interpretation of them. The surviving words themselves.Rebecca Alden.Caroline Morris.Nora Bennett.Three women who refused three different things.Three women assessed by Malcolm Pierce.Three women whose refusals later stopped being treated as reliable expressions of what they wanted.Leah stands at the west-study table and reads the final lines again.Reduced reliability.Reliability compromised during acute relational fixation.Prior objections should not be treated as reliable indicators of present preference.Daniel is beside the window. Julian appears on the secure screen, already preparing the challenge to Pierce’s appointment.Elaine has organized the records chronologically.“That matters,” she says.Leah looks up. “Why?”“Because if we only compare the final conclusions, Patricia can argue that similar language is normal in welfare cases. The sequence is stronger.”She points

  • Married in Her Name   Chapter 301: The Evaluator

Elaine finds the name less than an hour after Patricia files the request.By then, Julian has already objected to the proposed appointment process. Not to evaluation itself. Leah made that distinction clear. She will not refuse an independent assessment simply because the Grants want one.She will refuse a process in which Patricia gets to choose what independent means.Elaine enters the west study carrying her tablet.Daniel looks up immediately.“You found the list?”“Part of it.”Leah is sitting near the window with Margaret’s welfare petition open in front of her. She has read it enough times that she no longer needs the screen.“Who?”Elaine places the tablet on the table.“Dr. Malcolm Pierce.”Daniel’s expression remains blank.Leah does not recognize the name either.“What is he?” Daniel asks.“Clinical psychologist. Private practice. Family conflict, dependency assessment, high-pressure decision environments.”Daniel gives a humorless laugh.“Convenient.”Elaine does not smile

  • Married in Her Name   Chapter 300: The Grants Retaliate

The retaliation arrives before noon.Leah is still thinking about Daniel’s words from the night before when Elaine enters the west study carrying a printed filing instead of her tablet. That alone makes Leah uneasy.Daniel looks up from the desk.“What happened?”Elaine places the document between them.“The Grants escalated the welfare petition.”Leah’s stomach turns.Daniel reaches for the first page. The heading is more formal than the earlier concern notice.PETITION FOR INDEPENDENT WELFARE REVIEWMargaret Grant is listed as the concerned family member.Patricia Lang appears as the family adviser supporting the request.Leah sits slowly.“They actually filed.”“Yes.”Daniel reads faster. His expression changes by the second page.Elaine stands across from him.“They are no longer merely recommending private recovery.”“What are they asking for?”“An independent evaluation of Mrs. Cole’s emotional condition and decision-making environment.”Leah feels sick.Daniel keeps reading.Th

  • Married in Her Name   Chapter 299: Not Because of the Name

Daniel does not mention the tears in the car.Not when they reach the estate. Not when Marcus opens the door, and Leah steps out with her face composed again. Not when Mrs. Turner appears in the entrance hall, takes one look at Leah, and quietly tells the staff that nobody needs anything else from Mrs. Cole tonight.Daniel simply walks beside her.The house is almost painfully quiet after the charity event. No cameras. No Margaret. No Robert. No Patricia watching the angle of Leah’s shoulders and deciding what it means.Leah reaches the foot of the staircase before Daniel speaks.“Do you want to be alone?”She stops. The question should be easy.A few months ago, it would have been.“Yes” would have meant safety.A closed door.Distance from the husband she never chose.Tonight the answer catches somewhere inside her.Leah looks up the staircase. Then back at Daniel.“No.”Something changes in his face.He does not smile. He only nods.“Study?”Leah shakes her head.“Not there.”Too m

  • Married in Her Name   Chapter 298: After the Public Line

The first story changes before Leah reaches the car.Elaine sees it on her phone as they cross Lady Ashbourne’s entrance hall.“Do not read anything yet.”Leah looks at her.“That means there is already something to read.”“There is always something to read.”Daniel walks beside Leah without touching her.The photographers outside are louder now than they were when the couple arrived. Word has traveled through the ballroom faster than dinner ended.Margaret asked her daughter to leave with her.Mrs. Cole refused.Daniel Cole publicly said his wife would leave only if she chose to leave. The details will become less accurate with every retelling.Leah already knows that. She still asks, “What are they saying?”Elaine keeps walking.“Nothing useful.”“That is not an answer.”“It is the answer I am giving until you are inside the car.”Daniel glances toward Leah.“She is right.”Leah gives him a tired look.“You are both very irritating when you agree.”“Noted.”The doors open.Cold air

  • Married in Her Name   Chapter 297: The Public Protection

Margaret waits until Robert has left the ballroom.Leah notices that too.The timing is too precise to be accidental.Robert’s argument with Daniel ended quietly enough that most of the room probably heard only fragments, but those fragments were already spreading in the way society always spreads things: through glances, pauses, and people suddenly finding reasons to stand nearer than before.Daniel has barely returned to Leah’s side when Margaret begins moving toward them again.Patricia stays behind.Charles does not.He shifts closer to the edge of the room, near enough to watch without becoming part of the conversation.Leah’s stomach tightens.“Again,” she murmurs.Daniel follows her gaze.Margaret is coming. His expression hardens immediately.Leah looks at him before he can say anything.“Remember.”“I remember.”“You do not answer for me.”“I know.”“If she touches me—”“I wait.”“If I freeze?”“I ask if you want to leave.”Leah nods.Daniel’s voice lowers.“Twice.”The remin

  • Married in Her Name   Chapter 3: The Man at the Altar

The wedding gown fit Leah almost perfectly, though every stitch had been made for Olivia Grant. That was the cruelest part.Margaret Grant and two silent maids worked around her with quick, careful hands, closing buttons, smoothing lace, and adjusting the veil until Leah could barely see her own re

  • Married in Her Name   Chapter 2: The Name She Was Given

Leah did not take the veil. For several seconds, she only stared at it where it hung from Margaret Grant’s pale fingers, fine and weightless, as if it were not the thing that had just turned the room into a cage.Downstairs, the wedding music continued. It rose softly through the floorboards, elega

  • Married in Her Name   Chapter 1: The Dress That Was Never Hers

Leah Parker had spent six weeks making the wedding gown, but until that morning, she had never been afraid to touch it.The dress lay across the back seat of the taxi inside a long ivory garment bag, protected from dust, rain, and the careless hands of strangers. Even through the cover, Leah knew e

  • Married in Her Name   Chapter 4: The Name in the Register

The applause had not yet faded when the officiant turned them toward a small table set beside the arch.“If the bride and groom would sign,” he said.Leah had forgotten the register. In all the long hours of fear—the locked suite, the veil lowered like judgment, the endless aisle—no one had thought
