Amelia's POV

The garden was always my favorite place because it was somewhat close to my room. The flower beds were always carefully maintained, while a small fountain trickled peacefully somewhere behind me. I sat under the shade of a broad oak tree with a book resting in my lap, trying to lose myself in its pages. But I had read the same paragraph three times already without understanding a single word. My mind refused to stay still.

The investigation was over and Gabriella had been exposed,

Lucas' POV Of course she didn't know and I'd just blurted it in the least attractive ways I could have broken the news to her.“That's right, mate. You're my mate, Amelia.” I announced and she just blinked, her lips parting, only to close back without a single word slipping."I… well, I didn't know that! And there was no reason for me to keep being extremely shameless and demanding of my husband's brother. Also I didn't want you to treat me like I was dying, okay?" she sobbed, her whole body trembling on the table. "I wanted to feel normal for once. I wanted to live for once!"I turned away, pacing a tight circle as I tried to force my gasping lungs to take in air. I felt sick. The thought that she had been suffering in silence while I remained in the dark destroyed me inside.I stopped pacing and stepped back to the table, my hands trembling as I forced myself to look into her eyes. "Where did this come from, Amelia? Talk to me. How did this even start?"She shook her head, then sat

Lucas's POV Once Damian left the garden, I lifted Amelia into my arms, pulling her close against my chest, and turned back toward the house. Her head slumped against my shoulder, her fingers feebly twisting into my shirt. She was so light. It scared me how weightless she felt. The front doors banged open as I pushed through them into the main foyer. Usually, the pack house was filled with a lot of chatter or the sharp clatter of dishes from the dining room, but the moment I stepped inside, the main floor went dead quiet.Several pack members were scattered around the high-arched room. A couple of warriors hanging by the staircase stopped mid-sentence. Two women who were even holding stacks of folded linens froze near the hallway, their eyes wide as they took in the sight of me carrying my brother’s wife, my mate, but they didn't know that, in bridal style across the polished hardwood floor.I could feel them staring at me. Whispers started up almost instantly, rustling through the ro

Amelia's POVLucas was standing at the entrance of the garden, his hand resting casually against the railing, yet the air around us instantly felt twice as thick. His dark eyes were zeroed in on his brother, and his body was radiating a calm that was far more dangerous than anger. I knew that calmness all too well."What were you going to do, Damian? Hit her?" Lucas asked. "Do you want to lose that hand?"His voice wasn't loud, it didn't need to be. The words came out with such dead certainty that even the afternoon breeze seemed to die down.Damian slowly lowered the hand he had been reaching toward me with, but his eyes never left Lucas. For several long seconds, neither of them moved. They simply stared at each other across the stone pathway, years of deep resentment passing between the two brothers who had never truly been family.I slowly stepped back until I was standing beside Lucas. The wolf warmth radiating from him instantly dissipated the cold unease in my chest. Without th

My mind refused to stay still. The investigation was over and Gabriella had been exposed, and I felt as though the truth had finally caught up with the lies. It should have brought me complete peace, yet there was still something restless inside me. Perhaps it was because I knew the consequences were only beginning. People like Gabriella never accepted defeat easily. The sound of tires rolling over the gravel driveway pulled me away from my thoughts. I slowly lowered the book onto my lap and looked toward the front entrance. A vaguely familiar black SUV came to a stop outside the ho

Amelia's POVI had left my meeting with Williams feeling like I just had to go home and probably hear about how the interrogation went, but when I got home, no one else was there, so it did nothing to calm my nerves. If anything, the silence made everything worse. I couldn't stop pacing around the living room, walking from one end of the house to the other until I began wearing the same path into the floor. Every few steps, I caught myself biting the edge of my finger before forcing my hand away again. My thoughts kept circling back to whatever was happening at the precinct while I stayed here doing nothing. The only company I had was Kane and Kash. They stood outside the front door exactly where they were always stationed. I opened the door, hoping one of them might have some news for me, but they both simply turned toward me.How do I know their names when I probably never spoke to them before now? I just somehow caught Lucas calling out to Kane a few times when he was the only one

Gabriella's POVI drove around the city with no destination in mind, taking roads I normally ignored and circling the same streets more than once simply because I couldn't bring myself to go home. Every time I stopped at a traffic light, my hands gripped around the steering wheel as the same thought returned. Damian was probably already there, waiting for me. The image of his face outside the police station kept creeping back into my mind. I couldn't help imagining how his face must have fallen when the loopholes proved to be valid. The sky gradually darkened until the last traces of sunlight disappeared behind the buildings. Shop signs flickered to life one after another, and the streets slowly filled with people heading home from work. I couldn't keep driving forever. Sooner or later, I had to face whatever was waiting for me.My apartment building came into view far too quickly. I couldn't possibly go to the Pack house right now. Maybe I would, eventually, when I figured out how
