Chapter 4 My Father Watched from the Balcony as I Crawled

Author: Palma W
I said coldly, "Get your hands off me. I'm married."

Then I knelt without hesitation.

The first thorn pierced my knee and my entire body seized, like an electric shock. Before I could recover, the second and third drove in one after another. My stockings tore. Skin split open. Blood seeped out and stained the hem of my dress. I bit down on my lower lip, braced my hands against the ground, and inched forward step by step.

It hurt. The pain cut to the bone. But what hurt more was that my father stood on the second-floor balcony, looking down at me from above.

"Hand over the payment form now, and it's not too late." His voice fell from overhead, cold and without a shred of warmth.

"Nobody forced you to kneel. You chose to retaliate against your own family and treat a piece of paper as more important than your body. Don't go around playing the victim later, saying we abused you." He'd already crafted the narrative. His daughter had an emotional breakdown. Self-harm. And he was simply a helpless father.

My hands were trembling, not from pain but from his words. I'd thought seeing me like this might move him, even a little. It didn't. He was already calculating how to contain the fallout.

Claire stood on the steps, feigning concern. "You've really gone too far, Evelyn. You're actually torturing yourself just to guilt Dad and Ethan."

I kept crawling forward. Thorns sliced open my palms. Blood dripped between my fingers. The gardener, the housekeeper, the servants all stood nearby. Some looked pained, wanting to come help, but my father's single sentence nailed them in place: "Anyone who helps her can find a new job tomorrow." Every head dropped.

My father scoffed. "Evelyn has always been tough. This won't kill her."

Tough? My fingernails clawed into the dirt. So my toughness was just his excuse to keep hurting me.

I finally crawled to the end of the path and reached for the ring box. At that moment, Claire rushed over. "Let me help you up, Evelyn!" But her heel came down hard on the back of my hand.

Crack. The setting buckled. The rose diamond split down the middle. A hidden compartment in the ring box sprang open, exposing the corner of the payment form.

Claire's eyes shifted. She bent down to grab it. I pressed the paper flat with everything I had. She pressed harder with her foot, the heel grinding almost into the bone of my hand. She hissed under her breath, "Let go! You'd really throw your own father and Ethan in prison over a scrap of paper? How vicious can you be?"

"If one piece of paper is enough to destroy them," I was drenched in sweat, but my voice came out steadier than even I expected, "then what destroys them isn't me. It's what's written on it."

Her face twisted. She ground her heel down again. "You got kicked out and now you sleep in a tent with a homeless man, yet you think you're some kind of prosecutor? You filthy little bitch. Drop dead!"

She kicked me aside and snatched the fragment. I hit the ground. The wounds on my knees tore open again, blood spreading in dark patches. I clutched the shattered ring, my nails embedded in my palms.

My father finally came down from the balcony. But Claire staggered back with a shriek and dropped to the ground. "I was trying to help you up, Evelyn, and you pushed me? When are you going to learn to be kind?"

A slap struck my face. Ethan's expression was grim. "Enough. Are you done?"

My father helped Claire up. "When will you ever learn to behave?"

I struggled to my feet, my knees buckling with pain. I looked at my father one last time. In that single look, I burned away over twenty years of hope, grievance, and wishful thinking.

"From today on," my voice was quiet, but every word landed on the stone steps like a hammer, "you can be Claire's father alone."

My father's face turned ashen. "Spare me the childish threats. Once you've had a taste of suffering out there, you'll come crawling back."

"It's not a threat." I clutched the shattered ring box and turned away. The tears finally came, hot and violent, leaving me shaking. "It's notice."

My nose was bleeding. The slap had left a ringing in my ears. Claire looked at me with that delicate, helpless expression. "Oh no, Evelyn's bleeding."

But my father only scoffed. "Let's see how long you last. If you insist on fighting us, you can stay here and kneel until you're ready to apologize."

My mind split open with shock. "You promised you'd give me the ring back! How dare you?"

Then the world spun. Someone shoved me hard, and I fell into the pool. Water closed over my head.

I couldn't hear anyone on the shore anymore.

Nobody came to save me.

Was I going to die? After a moment, dark silhouettes gathered at the edge of the pool, holding what looked like guns.

I forced my eyes open. A face swam into view, familiar but impossibly out of place. My husband.

"Evelyn..."

Six months later, the Sterling Foundation completed the first phase of restructuring. Richard had lost all management authority. Proceedings involving unlawful detention, coerced signatures, trust violations, and misappropriation of funds were underway. He didn't go broke overnight, but he could no longer use the titles of "father" and "trustee" to control my life.Claire lost the acting chairmanship. Document forgery, evidence tampering, coerced confessions, asset transfers: she faced every charge on her own. Her engagement to Ethan shattered the moment they started blaming each other.Whitmore returned the illegally obtained funds. Ethan was removed by his own board. He sent me many messages afterward, saying he'd only made one mistake. I didn't reply to a single one. Because he'd never made just one mistake. At every moment when he could have chosen me, he'd chosen himself.I didn't go back to Sterling. The Margaret Aid Foundation built an independent board and a public oversight sy

At the joint meeting, Adrian sat in the gallery. Per the conflict-of-interest agreement, he did not participate in any votes.Ethan ultimately handed over the emails and financial records. Not out of conscience. Whitmore couldn't hold on any longer. The records proved Richard had known about Whitmore's cash shortage before the Rose Crown Gala. To preserve the alliance and the partnership, he'd agreed to divert charity funds. Claire submitted the authorization bearing my forged signature. Ethan knowingly accepted money for services that never existed and used it to pay off debts. No one had been deceived. Each of them chose to participate when it benefited them.I submitted my mother's original trust instrument first. The trust company confirmed that I was the sole beneficiary and held final voting authority. Claire's supplemental agreement was invalid. Forensic analysis showed that the signature had been copied from a scan and the paper manufactured after my mother's death. Server reco

Claire didn't concede. She shouted to the press, "Evelyn knew who he was all along! She's been using Augustus to strip Sterling from the start!" Richard followed her lead, calling me my husband's puppet and accusing us of engineering a hostile takeover through marriage. The story pivoted instantly from the homeless-stranger reveal to a new question: Was Augustus using our marriage to seize Sterling? If Adrian froze Sterling's assets now, it would support their claim. I made three public decisions on the spot: Augustus would have no vote or role in the Margaret Trust; an independent board would oversee the new foundation's long-term funding; and regulators and independent counsel would handle all Sterling-related assets, with Adrian excluded from any final disposition.A reporter asked, "Aren't you worried those restrictions could hurt your household's financial interests?""Marriage isn't a power of attorney," I said. "He's my husband. Not my proxy."Once that quote got out, Claire los

My father took the stage first. He announced Claire as the foundation's acting chair, citing my "impulsive marriage and emotional instability" as grounds for my losing the right to represent the family. Claire presented the forged agreement, looking every bit the martyr. "I never wanted to replace my sister. But she's dragging the whole family into her madness over some man no one's ever heard of. I had no choice but to step in."Ethan sidled up to me and dropped his voice. "Once Augustus invests, you'll have to come back to Sterling. What can that broke husband of yours give you besides a tent?"I didn't look at him. "Worry about your own company's debts."His expression had barely shifted when the main doors opened. Every Augustus executive in the room rose. Bank representatives and investment managers followed. The emcee announced, "The owner and chairman of Augustus Holding Group, Mr. Adrian Augustus, has arrived."I turned around. The man walking in wearing a black suit was my hus

Armed with the forged agreement, Claire prepared to sign financing documents on Sterling's behalf at the Manhattan Capital Summit. The trust company had already notified every party that Claire's authority was disputed, so no one could unknowingly rely on her signature. When my father learned of the notice, he sought an emergency injunction. He claimed I was "under the control of my husband and outside investors, using marriage to strip Sterling of its assets." The more mysterious Adrian's identity remained, the more credible the accusation sounded. Adrian suggested revealing himself. I said no. "If you show your hand now, they'll only say I'm using my husband's power to take over.""Then what do you want to do?""You don't participate in trust votes. You don't dispose of any assets on my behalf."He looked at me. "All right.""And if someone at the summit tries to force me to sign?""The only person who signs is you."That was the answer I needed. On the day of the summit, I walked in

  • Married to a Homeless Stranger, Crowned Above Them All   Chapter 15 What My Mother Really Left Me

The Sterling family trust on file was only a copy. The original was held by an independent trust company in Manhattan.Adrian and I went to verify it. On the way, I asked again. "What exactly is your relationship with the Augustus Group?"He was quiet for a moment. "A deep one.""That's not an answer.""Before the summit, I'll give you everything."I turned to him. "You're allowed to have business secrets. But you can't leave me as the last person in this marriage to learn who my husband is. Protecting me doesn't mean deciding how much I get to know."He didn't say "it's for your own good" the way my father would have. He only said, "That was my mistake."We retrieved the original. Its terms were clear: when I reached adulthood, I automatically received sole voting authority. My father was only the temporary trustee. After my mother's death, no new beneficiaries could be added. Any pledge of trust assets as collateral required my written consent. Claire's supplemental agreement was inv
