The storm between us

Rain drummed steadily on the metal roof of the cabin, restive fingers drumming against a jammed door. Asher changed positions on the couch, caught in a threadbare blanket that did nothing to warm him. A deep grunt escaped between his lips, not pain, but from the suffocating realization of waking up in a world that had only gotten scarier overnight.

His eyes snapped open to fuzzy, gray light filtering through grime-covered windows. Chilly air stuck to him, and he still heard the rumble of thunder rumbling somewhere in the distance. For a moment, he didn't recall where he was. Then last night came crashing down on him like a freight train of images.

The shooting. The broken glass. Damien.

He leapt upright, gasping, his heart pounding against his chest like a mad animal.

"Easy," came from the other side of the room.

Asher's head spun in that direction. Damien lounged by the window, half-hidden by light, a foaming mug clasped in both hands. He seemed not to have slept—eyes reddened, dark circles shadowing the skin beneath them. His broad shoulders were taut and the stubble on his jawline was more defined now, wild.

But not his disheveled looks were what caused Asher's throat to close. It was the way Damien was looking at him—still, hesitant, as though he was gazing at something delicate he didn't know how to hold.

Asher glanced away, holding the blanket tighter. "I should've stayed gone."

Damien was silent for a space of time. Then, softly, "They would've found you eventually."

Asher laughed, a sour sound. "Sure. Because being near you is that much safer."

The mug thudded against the windowsill as Damien set it down there. Rain smudged the world outside the pane, tracing the trees like tears. "I didn't come back to hurt you."

"No? So why did it feel so much like a bullet to the chest when you walked away?"

Air grew heavy. There was nothing but the rain and Asher's quiet, raspy breathing.

Damien stood, slowly, deliberately. Each step he took toward the couch was careful, as though afraid he might spook a wounded animal. He stopped just short, crouched down to Asher’s level. "I made a mistake."

Asher met his gaze, jaw clenched. "You think saying that fixes everything?"

"No," Damien whispered. "I think saying it is the start."

---

The next silence was heavier than any altercation. Asher stood and walked over to the tiny kitchen, not because he was hungry, but for space. His fingers fumbled over a broken mug, pouring from the kettle on the stove. The air stank of stale coffee.

He shuddered as he swallowed and leaned against the counter.

"Tell me everything."

Damien's footsteps lagged behind him. "Where do I start?"

"Start with Veronica."

Damien inhaled through his nostrils. "My father died when I was fourteen. Veronica married him late in life—she was younger, smarter. When he died, she moved in. Took over. The company. Me."

Asher turned, frowning. "What do you mean 'control of you'?"

Damien's grin was hollow. "Blackmail. Guilt. Manipulation. She has files on everybody. Skeletons to the ceiling. Including me."

Asher crossed his arms. "So all those months you were with me. you were being manipulated the whole time?"

Damien's voice cracked. "No. Not then. Not with you. That was real."

"You left like it wasn't."

Damien moved closer. "I left because she found out about you. Handed me pictures. Following. Said she'd ruin your life if I didn't kill her. Said I'd destroy yours like I destroyed hers."

Asher's breath was stuck in his throat. The image of her — Veronica — hard fingernails and harder smile, sitting behind a desk as lives were shattered at her fingertips, twisted his stomach into knots.

"You still should have told me," he breathed softly.

Damien nodded. "I know."

Asher looked down, the dust and lines between the boards of the cabin. "So now?"

Damien leaned back against the wall, arms crossed. "Now we survive. And then we take her down."

Asher's face twisted in anger, incredulity lighting up his eyes. "We?"

Damien's face softened. "I'm not leaving you again."

-----------------------------------------------------

The fire they lit that night was tiny but cozy, sputtering in the hearth. Asher huddled on the frayed rug, knees to his chest, while Damien coaxed the flames. The warm light played across their faces in gold and shadow.

"Give me something honest," Asher said harshly.

Damien blinked. "What?"

"Something you've never told anyone. Something that isn't a tool."

Damien gazed into the flames. His voice was so low that it was hardly audible. "When I was ten, I escaped. I made it two blocks before I frightened myself. I slept in a bridge. I thought I could get away."

Asher saw firelight dance in his eyes. "Why did you leave?"

Damien breathed. "Because I wanted to be free. Even for one night."

Asher was quiet for a moment. Then, "I used to press my ear to the wall in the group home. Pretend the sounds were from a real family. I’d imagine someone calling me for dinner."

Damien looked at him, something breaking in his expression.

He reached out slowly, brushing his fingers against Asher’s knuckles.

Asher didn’t pull away.

Their fingers intertwined like muscle memory.

A heavy, long silence hung between them. The only noise was rain hissing against the glass and the fire spitting.

Asher stared at their hands entwined. "You make it very hard to hate you."

Damien's thumb traced a circle around the rear of Asher's hand. "You can still attempt it. Just let me stay while you try."

Asher let out a deep breath. The storm outside was slowly breaking up.

But the one inside him was only just beginning to die down.

Chapter 15: Blueprints of BetrayalThe blue glow surrounded the room.Damien looked at the hologram hovering over the rusted steel table. Coded and schematics churned in the air—neural schematics, spinal mappings, and something evil: the emotional repression grid used in the Empath Nullification Trials."Graves didn't just want to control Cassandra," Damien said. "He wanted to erase her."Asher paced behind him. His fists were clenched, jaw set."Why her?""Because she was the last. The one who came out of shutdown?"Bishop leaned against the doorway, his shape a harsh silhouette. "She was their future. Until she learned to feel."The eyes echoed like gunfire. In the other room, Cassandra sat against the floor and the wall, staring at her reflection in a shattered mirror. She breathed on the glass and fogged it. She touched out, tracing the lines of her own face as though it belonged to someone else. The door creaked.Asher knelt down next to her without startling her."I felt like I

Chapter 14: Shards of the AftermathMorning reluctantly broke, spilling pale orange light over the wreckage of the NOVA-7 complex. Smoke continued to curl into the air behind them as they huddled around a small campfire at the top of a ridge that gazed down into the valley below.Adrenaline had worn off. Only the low hum of questions—unasked, unspoken—remained.Asher sat next to Cassandra. She hadn't spoken since they'd fled. Her eyes blazed with awareness, but her voice came and went, lost and weak."She's disoriented," Bishop said, unwrapping a ragged bandage from the side. "Whatever was done to her… it's still present."Asher looked up. "You said they were wiping her. Can that be undone?"Damien shook his head slowly. “Maybe. But it won’t be easy. Neural overwrite can embed itself like scar tissue. Every memory, every thought has to be rebuilt.”Cassandra stirred. “I dreamed… of snow… and silence.”Asher leaned closer. “You’re safe now. That’s what matters.”But he knew safety was

Chapter 13: White Silence, Black TruthsThe summits jagged like shattered blades into the atmosphere. NOVA-7 was not just hidden in secrets—it was hidden in a region where nature itself resisted penetration. Snow pounded sideways in thick white sheets, and the path to the plant was little more than rumor etched into ice.Damien, Asher, and Bishop trudged through snow that reached their knees, their breathing foggy clouds in the chill air. Every step grated with the urgency of the moment."They created this facility where satellites lose their vision," Bishop shouted over the wind. "If we get inside, there is no redundancy. We are dark.""Good," Asher growled. "Means no distraction."They crested the final ridge, and there it was: a silhouette cut into the ice, half mountain, half machinery. NOVA-7.The exterior was all functional menace—black steel, armed drones, and infrared sweeps tracing back and forth across the ice plain."Clock's ticking," Damien said. "We have the codes Bishop

Chapter 12: Breachlines and BetrayalsDrenmore's rain had turned to sleet by the time they reached their hideout—a two-story ruin on the outskirts, smeared in grime and graffiti. Inside, it was damp, reeking of old smoke and wet stone, but safe. For the time being.Damien shut the bolt behind them, his jaw clenched. He hadn't spoken since they'd left the facility. Asher sat on the stained couch, his arm freshly bandaged, his muscles coiled with a subdued rage. The atmosphere was heavy."I saw her, Damien."Damien at last turned to him. "I know.""She's alive.""And captive in the belly of the most secure space under Emberlight control."Asher stood up, slowly. His movements were measured, painful. "We're going in after her.""Yes," Damien said. "But we don't go into NOVA-7 blind."He spread a pile of blueprints across the coffee table. Satellite photos. Transport routes. Encryption patterns. "Graves wasn't burying her life. He's financing the program that's doing this."Asher's jaw ti

  • Married to my Enemy: A Billionaire's Hidden Love   Embers in the Rain

Chapter 11: Embers in the RainDrenmore was never a city of masks. Glass and steel spires loomed overhead like solemn witnesses to the corruption that swirled below, their reflective sides hiding corruption and scandals in open view. The rain lashed down in relentless sheets that morning, pouring over the city in cold silver and ash.Damien and Asher stood across the street from the Central Research Ministry—glass-faced, clinical, and guarded like a prison. A place where secrets were buried under sterile light. A place where Emberlight once operated in the open. The flash drive had given them names. Targets. Proof. And one directive:Facility Delta-9—beneath the ministry. The last place Asher’s sister had been seen.“We’re going in through the front?” Asher asked, eyes scanning the guards.Damien tilted his head, rain dripping off his jaw. "Not if you want to be dead by lunch. There's an old maintenance access under the north loading dock. Service tunnel. That's our time window.""Sec

  • Married to my Enemy: A Billionaire's Hidden Love   Shadows Under Drenmore

The train yard slumbered like a cast-off relic, its metal framework coated with rusting grime that shimmered with the pale blue of dawn. Fog crept along the rails like a beast looking for warmth, and the signal towers loomed like silent sentinels, watchful, always watching.Damien left the truck two blocks back, behind a ruined warehouse shrouded in dust and ivy. They walked, shrouded in shadows and silence, every step measured. The sort of silence that curled around your ribs and made your heart pound in your ears. The sort of silence that smelled of rain and pollution and despair.Asher's fingers tightened around the handle of his gun as they walked toward the third signal box, precisely where Graves had instructed. His breath misted in the chill."You think he actually gave us everything?" he breathed."No," Damien replied. "But he gave us enough to begin a war."Asher kneeled beside the box, fingers flying and deliberate. The lock was ancient—mechanical, not digital. An anachronis
