"NOBODY was fighting, Ma'am. How much alcohol have you had?"
Elaine exhaled deeply. There's a hint of certainty and emphasis on the officer's voice as he said those words to her face. Even the two MMDA officers had the same testimony about it. She wanted to insist but decided not to especially when she saw a taunting curl on the officer's lips. Besides, there's no more energy left for her to argue.
She found out that the owner of the sports car she'd bumped into was the officer himself. SPO2 Marco Figueroa.
It seemed like he did not want to negotiate. And now she's facing lawsuits; drunk driving and damage to property. However, what's making her see red was this obnoxious cop. Midnight barely fell just yet and she had a very long day today. She just wanted to go home and take some good rest. But unexpected things kept getting in her way and she couldn't get any more pissed.
"Can I just make a call? I need to contact my lawyer,"
"Be my guest but make it quick," he folded his arms and smirked at her. She rolled her eyes at him and spun on her heels, removing him off of her sight.
Only one name crossed Elaine's mind every time she'd found herself in the police station. It's Tan. But just like her previous calls three years ago, his phone just kept ringing. Nobody’s picking up the phone.
She tried calling him again after the fourth failed attempt. Perhaps, he was in the O.R. She knew that Tan was checking the surgery room every now and then to operate and to somewhat observe.
Elaine decided to send him a message instead. She told him her whereabouts and what her problem was. After receiving no messages within fifteen minutes, she typed once again.
"Please come. I'll wait for you,"
She almost jumped for joy when her phone buzzed after a few seconds. Only to make her shoulders' slouched when he replied, "Your business is none of my business."
ELAINE yawned. After she failed to contact Tan, she had just decided to spend her night in the police station. The clock reached two in the morning when she saw a familiar person coming into the station's lobby. It was Attorney Ramas and like a flash, she jumped out of her seat. Tan could not resist her, she smiled at the thought. He even sent his personal lawyer to give her assistance. Somehow, a tiny bit of hope sparked into her. But only to be shut off when she noticed the woman behind him. It was Janine. A woman whose fiance's about to be taken away from her. Disappointed, she fell back to her seat.
After what seemed to be an hour, Elaine found herself sharing a table with Janine at Starbucks. She ordered a coffee while Janine only got herself a glass of water.
"I'll get straight to the point, Elaine," Janine said.
Gathering her nerves, she looked straight right into the doctor's eyes.
"I was aware of the textile's condition. Tan told me,"
It was as though someone punched her gut hearing what she said. Is this the confirmation that they're really dating?
"Don't try to act innocent with me. I know how cruel and scheming you are. There's no way you can a dethorn a rose just because you rooted it out from an old hideous pot then carried it to a fancy one. I know who you really are, Elaine. I know what kind of family you came from,"
Elaine's brows furrowed, unsure what to say against her knowing that what she said was sort of making sense, one way or another.
"I don't want to challenge you but you can go ahead and try to steal Tan away from me. You may use the textile's flopping state and any resources you can think of. To make it clear for you, Tan will never hurt me just to get back with you,"
A smile curled her lips and said, "Don't get too worked up. You seemed threatened,"
Janine opened her mouth, about to say something, but before she could utter a word, Elaine stood from her seat.
"Thanks for coming. I was slightly touched by the act of yours,"
"I'm not finished with you yet," Janine countered as she turned her back at her.
Elaine continued taking her way out and headed back to her car. She glanced over her window car to watch Janine as she fastened her seatbelt. But the latter had gone out of the coffee shop.
"...There's no way you can a dethorn a rose just because you rooted it out from an old hideous pot then carried it to a fancy one..." she remembered her saying.
She inhaled deeply before turning on the engine and finally drove her way off.
WITH a cup of coffee in hand, Tan and Janine set foot in AMM Hospital with a series of greetings from staff they'd stumble upon just right at the entrance of the building up until the hospital's hallway. Even when they'd reach the elevator, people still greet them with congratulations.
"What's happening?" asked Janine.
However, he wasn't sure. He had not heard any nominations lately. Giving it a shrug, they continued moving forward and waited for the elevator door to open.
"Hey, Doctor. When is the date again? I need to have my schedule fixed so that I can attend this time,"
Tan's forehead creased. "Date? What date?"
"Of your wedding,"
Confused, his brows met. "What are you talking about?"
"Don't you know?" Aaron asked him, dumbfounded. He then spread his clinical record book open, pulling out a customized wedding invitation card. "This. The maid of honor herself delivered them early on,"
Tan's eyebrows furrowed even more. The confusion was written in his face.
IN Ainsdale, Elaine slid her phone back into her purse with a satisfied smile painted on her lips. She had received Drew's message. The invitation cards were finally distributed to all the staff in the hospital. She even had it rushed earlier this morning and now, she couldn't feel any more thrilled.
Janine was wrong. Elaine never considered herself a flower. She was actually the thorn. And she knew by now that the thorn would absolutely cause her pain. She smirked at the thought of it.
Tan's birthday is coming up very soon. The wedding will happen a few days before. Tan would not give her a fancy wedding just like before, Elaine already knew. All she wanted was just the two of them and a few witnesses, which is more important for her.
"I'll be out for work early today, Anne. Call me if there's a problem," Elaine told her this afternoon.
She picked up her purse and got herself ready when she saw the familiar man marching in her direction. His dark expression as he was approaching her made her stand still on her feet. Tan halted in front of her. She blinked, not knowing whether to remove eye contact with him or not. His gaze felt like burning her whole.
She gulped.
"Yeah, Why not? You asked for this. You wanted this. Blame no one but yourself, Elaine."
Life hadn't given Elaine a lot of happiness and moments to cherish. At the age of twenty-five, she could only count the moment she felt the happiest. One was the day Tan proposed to her.It was on the 14th of February year 2016. Right in front of the fast-food restaurant that she used to work at.She could hardly remember how she reacted or how she exactly said "Yes, I'll marry you!" But she could remember how nervous Tan was in vivid detail. The sincere emotions painted in his eyes while bending on his knees, holding a case in hand with an engagement ring in it.After almost four years, Tan was proposing again. But he was not kneeling this time around. Nor was he holding a ring. No sign of nervousness, unlike before. And most particularly, Tan was not there to promise her heaven and earth. No more sincerity. No more respect. There was no love in his eyes either. His cold gaze held thousands of warning signs. As if she h
"C-can you drive me home, Tan?" Elaine managed to say those words to him while trying her best to stand still. She felt a tear fall down her cheeks, Tan was looking at her but he didn't even flinch. Tan would rather think that those tears weren't real. That those were tears out of too much intoxication or maybe because she was throwing up earlier. Elaine blinked, trying to suppress the threatening tears forming in her eyes.Despite the heavy feeling she carried in her chest, Elaine still wanted to thank Tan for thinking that she wasn't weak. He fell in love with her then because she was tough and resilient. He didn't have to know what her weakness was no matter what."Will you?" she added. She slightly reached her car key to him. If Tan would just look at it, he would probably know by now that her hand was trembling badly. But Tan was looking at her straight in the eyes. He put his hands in his pocke
ELAINE'S jaw dropped. Was she hearing things correctly? She turned to face Tan who was staring straight at her. She tore her gaze from him. His gaze seemed like burning her fully. She decided to shift her look at Atty. Ramas who was smiling at them. But there was a hint of guilt in his eyes as he looked at Elaine."As I said over the phone, Tan wants to get married as soon as possible," he chuckled awkwardly.Elaine bit her lips. She didn't expect that the "as soon as possible" could be this literal. From bed to marriage. Nor was she even able to comb her hair. Judge Costanilla handed the marriage contract over to Elaine. Hesitant, she obliged and took the contract."Attorney...""Ah, yes?" Atty Ramas turned to her, but his eyes could not stare at hers directly. He took a folder out of his case and handed it over to her, which her face still flustered by the unexpected matter. For he
Tainted. That was mean. But Elaine does not want to argue with Tan. Nevertheless, they had already tied the knot. Tan was her husband again. And since it was the first day of their second marriage, the last thing Elaine wanted to do was to fight with him.If Tan was waiting to see the pain and disappointment in her eyes, she had to prove him wrong. It was a happy and special day for her. Regardless of how it was carried through. Still, it was held successfully."I'll be alright wherever then. It does not matter," she smiled at him.Tan's jaw jerked as if he didn't believe her."Uh, are you staying for breakfast?" she asked."How about dinner tonight?" she added when she heard no response on the first question."I could drop by in the hospital later on or we could just meet at the nearest restaurant whenever you are free," she told him as she followed him towards the door.
"WHERE are we heading next? Are you going to pick me up tonight or we'll just meet at your condo, whatever it is just let me know?" Drew asked her as soon as pulled up in front of the Baclaran Church."You have to go to work tonight, don't you ever— And I have to go on a date, so please, spare me,""Yeah right! There were neither wedding vows nor kisses. So if there's no honeymoon, screw him," Drew clicked the tip of her tongue. "Tell me how long did it take or how many rounds did you guys do when we meet tomorrow, alright?" Drew chortled.Elaine burst out laughing. "Jesus, stop,"Shaking her head, she pulled the plastic bag with take-out food she bought for Macon and Mr. Chito and handed it over to Drew."I'll visit some other time, okay?""Sure. Phone me when there's a problem,"At any rate, right after Drew had l
Elaine curled her fist into a tight ball slightly deforming the paper in her hand. She was sitting on the bed while her back leaned against the headboard. The sun is about to surface in a few minutes, and yet there she was, still deep in her thoughts. She already took her medication for insomnia a few hours ago but it didn't kick in just yet. She could not fall asleep after reading the documents that Tan told her to sign for. She heaved out a sigh and put the papers on the table. She adjusted on the bed so she could properly lie down.Conditioning her mind that signing the papers would settle everything was a bad idea. There were some conditions she had to meet Tan, himself made. Tons of them. They will move to a house. This basically means that she won't be living in his mansion. Odd it may seem, Elaine didn't have any violent reactions to it. The best and fastest way to win his heart over is to live with him under the same roof.&nb
Elaine scanned the four-cornered walls of the room. The size was tolerable. There was a double-sized bed pinned on the wooden wall. A normal-sized lampshade sat on the side table. There was also a white traditional built-in closet right across the bed. A thick amount of dust was noticeable even from afar. No windows she could see but there was a split type aircon attached at the corner of the wall a few inches gap from the ceiling. The walls badly needed repainting. Also, the carpet had to be replaced as well as the center table. She rolled her two suitcases aside and stepped out of the room to check the entire appearance of the house. Well, except Tan's room. He went into his room as soon as he gave her the keys. At least the living room looks clean and decent. She was lost for words she didn't notice its entirety a little while ago. There was a decent-sized couch at the center and a TV placed on the wooden rack. Under it was a pile of unarranged magazines and
Pesky and over-talkative. Those are two words that best describe Marco. He was talking nonstop in the backseat and Elaine couldn't help but listen in silence. He said he was staying temporarily with his uncle since the station he was currently assigned to happened to be near there. He also added that it was just two blocks away from Elaine's new house. He went for a jog that morning when he saw her coming out of the house to look for the nearest convenience store.Elaine pulled to a stop right in front of the gate of her house. She then turned to face Marco, gesturing to him to get out of the car."Are you not taking me home?"Elaine rolled her eyes. "I am absolutely not a taxi driver to drop you off at your front door. Get out of my car."Marco pouted his lips but followed as told so. Elaine locked her car before rushing towards the trunk to get the grocery bags. However, Marco already had them in h
