Mia's world had become a gilded cage. Immediately after the proposal, Logan moved her from their current house to another one of his luxurious mansions.

Devastation curled in her chest when Logan broke the news to her. He was going on a business trip that would require him to be gone for weeks, and to ensure her safety, he had moved her to another house that was miles away from the first mansion.

"This is where you'll live from now on until I get back from my business trip." Logan had said to her when they arrived at the new house.

"How long will you be gone for?" She asked.

"Might take weeks, but I promise I won't be gone for long."

Unknown to her, Logan had brought her down to this place so he could restrict her movements and ensure she wouldn't leave while he was gone.

Ever since Logan found her along the road that led to Fred's house, he'd had his suspicions.

The mansion he had brought her to was well packed with all the things Mia would need to survive, so she didn't have a

That evening, Mia was led into the dining hall of Logan's mansion by a servant. "Come on down, Mia!" Logan beckoned to her with a wide smile on his face. She stared aimlessly as she descended the stairs, her hand sliding down the rails of the stairs gracefully. Her heart began to race when she caught a glimpse of what was in Logan's hand. The bright light from the chandelier that bounced off it got into her eyes; she had to shield her eyes slightly. The engagement ring was well situated in the box Logan held open towards Mia. And he wasn't alone. Mia wished he was. Next to him stood Fred with that wicked smirk Mia was familiar with, his eyes watching her every move. A couple of his associates stood there, all beaming with smiles, as though awaiting their long-lost princess. Mia's skin crawled as she approached them. "Look at what I've got for you, Mia. An engagement ring to seal the deal!" Logan announced gleefully. Mia's breath hitched in her throat. Her eyes stayed glued to

It had been exactly two months since Mia broke up with Jason and moved into Logan's house. Right before she had found Jason in bed with that woman, she had been sexually active with him. The doctor had revealed at the hospital that Mia was two months and a few weeks pregnant. To reconfirm her fears, she secretly got a pregnancy strip to test herself. That morning, holding the container with the warm liquid that seeped through her palm, Mia stood in front of the bathroom mirror. She examined the image of the woman staring back at her before dipping the base of the pregnancy strip into the cup of urine. She let it sit on the table before spreading her hands apart on its side. Her head hanging over her shoulders, with her hair falling freely down her cheeks. She waited. "I hadn't gotten my period for two months. What the hell was I thinking?!" She let out a sigh, then shuffled her fingers across the numerous items scattered all over the table, reaching for a bottle of medicine. Sh

Diana’s jaw tightened. “Cut deals again and the city notices. Patterns form. We need a diversion—something loud that takes attention off the vault. A public spectacle. Something they rant about on morning shows so that by the time the reports get clean, we’re ghosts.”Logan’s lips twitched with interest. “What did you have in mind?”She smiled then, not a warming smile. “We hit their elections supplies. Intercept a shipment of campaign letters and smear everyone with the fallout. Let them scream about fraud while we dissolve the evidence.”A murmur of approval. The room began to tilt toward crime like iron filings to a magnet. Plans sketched themselves in the air—routes, available contacts, times. The scene softened into the mechanical whirr of men and women arranging mischief with the same calmness a chef arranges knives. Then, like a spark touching a dry field, someone made a joke—an old, terrible one. “Or we crash a gala and make the mayor drink from our cup,” said a broad-shoulder

The room smelled of oil and old smoke—metallic tang that clung to tongues and made voices sound rougher. Fluorescent tubes, one cracked, buzzed above a long steel table scarred with bullets and endless deals. Around it sat men and women who had woven violence into their calendars, who measured risk like accountants did numbers. At the head, Logan leaned back on a chair that had seen better days, fingers laced behind his head as if he could cradle the whole city in that effortless posture. Diana stood opposite him, a glass of whiskey in one hand and a smirk she wore like armor.“Black vaults,” Logan said, unfurling a map with one practiced thumb. “Two armored carriers. Government convoy—unmarked plates. We ambushed at 03:12. No civilian casualties. No loose ends. No mistakes.”A ripple of approval threaded the circle. The loot sat in the center of the table, wrapped in tarps: stacks of sterilized currency, hard drives humming with secrets, a fat envelope of passports with gold-embossed

Mia sat frozen in place as Logan came over with Fred. She kept her face forward, her body motionless. The back seat opened and Fred got in, his eyes locked with Mia's through the rear view mirror, her eyes pleading for him not to give off any hint that they knew each other. Fred held her gaze with shock written all across his face. Logan resumed his place at the driver's seat. "This is the friend I was telling you about. His name is Jerry."As soon as Mia sensed the look of shock creeping its way to her face, she straightened, and it immediately disintegrated. "Jerry, meet my fiancee, mia."So Logan didn't know him by Fred. That would mean a lot. Mia quickly interpreted it to mean that Fred was probably working under cover for Logan and he was no friend of his. And Logan had no idea about his real personality. "Now let's get you to the hospital." Logan said and started the engine of the car. All throughout the journey, Fred kept his eyes on Logan—judging her. He could finally
