“No?” Genevieve(his grandmother) questioned. She noticed the awkward tension between them and noticed something we're wrong.

Elara’s lips parted slightly,What has she done? Alex looked at her coldly. His grandmother is so smart, he's sure she's noticing already.

“I mean he shouldn't kiss me, I will do that. Right baby?” Elara said quickly and Alex forced a smile.

Genevieve nodded. “Kiss my grandson, it's your choice.”

“She might be a shy granny.” One of the family members said.

“Kiss! Kiss!”

Elara glared at Alex who returned the glare. She's not shy, she hates the fact that he'd kiss her, because of how he kissed her unexpectedly.

She grabbed him by the tie, Alex submissively moved closer to her, his family members screamed, Genevieve gasped with excitement.

“Kiss him! Kiss him!”

Elara rolled her eyes, her hands wrapped around his shoulder and their lips met. Alexander lost his mind immediately, he pulled her waist with his right hand and his other hand cupped her right cheek.

He bit her lips forcing her to open up while his hands pulled him even more closer.

Phone cameras were lifted in the wedding hall to capture the beautiful moment between Elara and Alex.

Even though it's their beginning it feels like an ending.

***

Alex drove her to his gigantic mansion, he parked his car in his garage. Then got down, to open the door for his wife.

His jacket was on his shoulder, his tie loosened already and two buttons undone from his shirt.

Elara was fast asleep already, he pulled the car door open for her, he didn’t even notice in the car. He waved at her, her eyes didn't open.

“Listen, we're both tired. Open your eyes, I don’t have the strength to carry you out of this car.” He said, staring at her.

“When I first saw you, I was surprised to know why a man like you was abandoned at the courthouse by his bride.” Elara opened her eyes.

“What do you mean by that?” He asked, his eyes cold.

Elara stepped out of the car and he jammed the car door angrily.

The maids are already carrying her suitcases out of the car.

“I mean, why would any woman choose to settle for a man like you?” she said sharply, eyes narrowing with contempt. “You’re cold, completely nonchalant, like nothing in this world actually moves you. No warmth, no effort, no presence. You stand there like you’re above everything, but really, you’re just empty. There’s nothing magnetic about you. And you think that makes you mysterious?”

Alex looked around not to laugh. “Coming from you who only married me to avoid humiliation. I guess you don't even know who I am or you're just pretending.”

“I do not know you and I do not want to know who the fuck you are!” She yelled back angrily.

Alex grabbed her shoulders tightly and she flinched.

“Let go of me!” Elara groaned.

He dropped her shoulder roughly, she staggered. Their eyes locked, anger visible both in their eyes.

“I hate you, hate myself for not thinking before marrying. I was crying and all you could say was I'll be fine.” Elara said, her voice filled with emotions.

He took a step back, creating space between them like a boundary being drawn.

“We got married because we were both cornered by humiliation. That’s it. You were standing on the edge of public disgrace, and I was already buried under my own. So we made a deal, we're just two people saving face. Nothing more.”

“Oh yeah…I forgot that.” Elara whispered, nodding her head in agreement. He said it before the vows that it's just for a year, he's right, she just thought he was a nice person.

“ Elara. Don’t confuse proximity with attachment. Don’t confuse marriage with care. And don’t confuse my silence for obligation.” He said, his voice cold. “I don’t owe you love. I don’t owe you warmth. I don’t even owe you understanding. What I agreed to was a name on paper, not a life intertwined with yours.”

A beat of silence stretched between them. Elara swallowed, her fist clenched at her sides.

“And if you’re waiting for me to suddenly become the kind of husband you imagined in your head, stop. That man was never part of this arrangement. So stay within your limit.”

Back at Alex’s mansion. Alex stepped out of his room, already dressed in his nightwear. Exhaustion clung to him, but at the same time there was also a strange sense of relief settling in his chest. He didn’t fail his grandmother, he wasn’t humiliated because of anyone. Even if he didn't marry the woman of his choice, the best part was that he married someone. He sat at the edge of his bed, his mind replaying everything that had happened. He had left the Harrington mansion happily, believing he was finally about to marry the woman he loved. But she left him, she told him; “I’m twenty-four, I still have a long way to go. I can’t let marriage slow me down.” Her words echoed in his head, sharp and irritating. Alex let out a dry chuckle. She had a long way to go and he didn’t? He was only twenty-six. It wasn’t like he was desperate or trying to trap anyone into marriage. They have been together for good three years. Three years of building something he thought was real, only for it t

Elara stared at his back as he walked inside the mansion until he was out of sight. What was she thinking? That everyone will be nice like her or pretend to be nice like Henry. She has brought this upon herself, so she has to handle it. She took a deep breath, the soft air hitting her skin. A maid approached her.“Welcome Mrs Harrington, please come with me…”“Do not call me that! It's Elara!” She shouted at the maid.“I'm sorry, ma'am, please come with me.” The maid said and bowed shortly. Elara was so angry, she did not even feel like she was rude to the maid or not. “Lead the way.” She ordered and the maids bowed.Elara followed the maid. Her eyes scanned her environment as she walked. She will admit to herself again, Alex is rich. His mansion screams wealth, and it's beautiful. ***On Harrington island, Genevieve called a family meeting. They all sat at the dining table to have dinner and at the same time discuss whatever she wanted to discuss. “Mother, your grandson got ma

Elara shut her eyes, tears squeezing out of it. She was weak when she was supposed to be strong. It's not as easy as she thought it'd be, she didn’t know they'd be having a real court wedding. Alex gave her his handkerchief, she touched her eyes with it not to ruin her makeup by wiping her face.He looked at her, without care in his eyes. He believes it's none of his business, she'd be fine.Elara’s gaze turned to him, how can he say such a thing? Doesn't he know the gravity of the vows? “You'll be fine.” He whispered. Elara scoffed and rested her head back on the chair, hoping this would end, she'd leave to be alone in a room and cry her pain out.He held his own file, having it in mind that this is just a fake wedding nothing else. Though he knew deep down he's just trying to be strong, he was hurt deeply. Then he started reading;“I Alexander Harrington is sitting here beside you, feeling something deeper than excitement, something stronger than certainty. I feel a quiet, unsha

Elara gasped into his mouth softly, but it betrayed her completely.Their lips were locked warmly, unfamiliar in a way that made her heart stumble. Yet Alex didn’t deepen the kiss. He didn’t tilt his head, didn’t pull her closer, didn’t claim her the way a man in love would. And somehow, that made it even more overwhelming. Her fingers curled slightly against his chest, uncertain whether to push him away or hold on.Alex broke the kiss and Elara blinked, she pulled away from him instantly. “Why did you do that?” She complained. “Because of my family, they're here.” Alex replied, his eyes darted towards them as they entered one by one.“You could've stated it, you could've just said that you wanted to kiss me,” Elara whispered angrily.“It's just a kiss, nothing much.”He said nonchalantly, straightening his tie.Elara rolled her eyes, she noticed how cold he was but she's not expecting anything less than that, his bride didn't show up like the way Henry didn't.Alex smiled at his g

"Penelope said she's not ready for marriage, what would I tell granny? That my girlfriend left me?"Alexander’s jaw tightened as he stood just outside the courthouse, the white pillars towering behind him like silent witnesses to his humiliation. He's on a phone call with his brother. “I thought you said you’d get a quick bride for me?” Alexander snapped into the phone, his voice sharp enough to cut through steel.“I’m trying my best, brother. I don’t want you to marry just anyone.” Alex let out a dry, humorless laugh, dragging a hand down his face. “I do not give a fucking shit how you’ll do it,” he said, his tone dropping into something colder, something final. “I want a bride. At any cost, anyone we'll be getting divorced after a year!” There was silence for a second. Then he ended the call. He didn’t wait for a response, didn't need one either. He wants quick actions, and he doesn't care if he sounds desperate. His hand slowly lowered, the phone slipping back into
