The ice cream had been a mistake.

Elena realized that about thirty minutes after they got home, when both boys were bouncing off the walls with sugar-fueled energy that showed no signs of fading.

"Mommy, look!" Leo shouted, running through the living room with a cape made from one of Elena's scarves. "I'm a superhero!"

"Not on the furniture!" Elena called, trying to catch him before he jumped off the couch. "Leo, please. You're going to break something."

"I'm Spider-Man!" he declared, ignoring her completely and leaping onto the ottoman.

Lucas, meanwhile, had discovered Elena's craft supplies. He sat at the dining table, surrounded by construction paper, glue, and an alarming amount of glitter.

"Mommy," he said seriously, not looking up from his project. "I'm making you a card."

Elena's heart melted. "You are? That's so sweet, baby."

"It's a sorry card," Lucas explained. "For when you work too much."

Elena's throat tightened. She walked over, kneeling beside him.

"You don't have to say sorry, sweetheart. I'm the one who should be sorry. For working too much. For not being here enough."

Lucas looked up at her, his dark eyes serious. "It's okay, Mommy. We know you're building something important."

Elena's eyes filled with tears. "How did you get so smart?"

Lucas shrugged. "I listen."

By 4 PM, the sugar crash hit.

Both boys were suddenly exhausted, sprawled out on the living room floor surrounded by toys they'd pulled out and abandoned halfway through.

Elena sat on the couch, watching them. Her phone was still on silent. Still in her bag.

She hadn't checked it in six hours.

It was... liberating.

"Mommy?" Leo's voice was small, sleepy. "Can you read us a story?"

Elena smiled. "Of course, baby. Which one?"

"The one about the dragon," Lucas said, already curling up against her side.

Elena reached for the book on the coffee table—the one they'd read a hundred times, the one she could practically recite from memory.

She settled back, pulling both boys close, and began to read.

Her voice was soft, steady. The words were familiar. The boys' breathing slowly evened out as they drifted toward sleep.

And for the first time in weeks, Elena felt... peaceful.

She didn't move when they fell asleep.

Leo was sprawled across her lap, his head on her stomach. Lucas was curled against her side, one hand clutching the edge of her shirt.

Elena stayed perfectly still, afraid to wake them.

The sun was setting outside the window, casting golden light across the living room. The boys' breathing was deep and even. The house was quiet.

Elena closed her eyes, just for a moment.

She woke up an hour later to the sound of the doorbell.

Carefully, carefully, she extricated herself from the boys, covering them with a blanket before padding to the door.

James stood on the other side, holding a bag of groceries and a small suitcase.

"Hey," he said, smiling. "I brought dinner."

Elena blinked, surprised. "James? What are you doing here? And... is that a suitcase?"

James stepped inside, setting the groceries on the counter. "I'm staying for a while. A few days. Maybe a week."

Elena's eyes widened. "What? James, you can't just—"

"I already cleared it with your nanny," James interrupted calmly. "She's taking a short vacation. Family emergency. I offered to fill in."

Elena's mouth opened, then closed. "You... you what?"

James turned to face her, his expression serious. "Elena, you're drowning. You're working eighteen-hour days. You're barely sleeping. And those boys in there? They need their mother. Not a ghost who comes home to sleep for three hours."

Elena's chest tightened. "I'm fine. I can handle—"

"I know you can handle it," James said gently. "But you shouldn't have to. Not alone."

He stepped closer, his voice softening.

"Let me help, Elena. Let me take care of the boys. Let me make sure they're fed and bathed and put to bed. Let me be the reason you can focus on what you need to focus on without worrying about them."

Elena's hands trembled. "James, I... I can't ask you to do that."

"You're not asking," James said. "I'm offering. I already told the nanny I'd handle it. I already booked the time off work. All that's left is for you to say yes."

Elena looked down, her throat tight. "Why are you doing this?"

James's answer was quiet. "Because I love you. Because those boys deserve a mother who isn't running on empty. And because... because I want to be here. For you. For them. However you'll let me."

Elena's eyes filled with tears. "James, I can't promise you anything. You know that. There are... complications. Things I can't explain."

"I know," James said. "I'm not asking for promises. I'm just asking for a chance to help."

Elena looked at him for a long moment. At the sincerity in his eyes. At the way he stood there, ready to step into her chaotic life without hesitation.

Finally, she nodded. "Okay. A week. Just... a week."

James's face lit up. "A week. Perfect."

Dinner was quiet.

The boys woke up groggy and hungry, barely registering James's presence as they ate. Elena watched them, her heart full and aching all at once.

After dinner, James helped with bath time. Then bedtime. He read to Leo while Elena read to Lucas, and somehow, it felt... natural.

Like this was something they did often.

Like this was normal.

When the boys were finally asleep, Elena and James stood in the hallway, looking at their closed bedroom doors.

"Thank you," Elena said quietly. "For tonight. For everything."

James nodded. "Anytime, Elena. You know that."

Elena hesitated. "I should probably check my phone. See what emergencies I missed."

James's expression was understanding. "Go ahead. I'll clean up the kitchen."

Elena walked to her office, pulling out her phone.

Forty-seven missed calls. Twenty-three emails. Twelve text messages.

She scrolled through them quickly.

Her assistant, demanding an update on the Hartley acquisition.

Her lawyer, confirming the signing ceremony for tomorrow morning.

Her COO, asking about the quarterly budget.

She silenced the phone and set it down.

Tomorrow would handle itself.

Tonight, she was just a mother.

And that was enough.

The doctor arrived within thirty minutes. He was a small, efficient man who'd been treating Julian for years. He took one look at Elena and got to work."Her pupils are dilated," he muttered, checking her eyes. "Heart rate elevated. Body temperature high. What was she given?""I don't know," Julian said, pacing. "She was kidnapped. Taken to a club. I found her before... before anything happened."The doctor nodded, pulling out a syringe. "I'm going to give her something to help her sleep. To calm her system. It won't reverse the drugs completely, but it'll help her body process them faster."He injected the medication into Elena's arm.Within minutes, her breathing evened out. Her body relaxed. But she was still burning up."Cold compresses," the doctor ordered. "Keep her cool. Change them every fifteen minutes. If her temperature doesn't drop within two hours, call me."Julian nodded. "How long until the drugs are out of her system?"The doctor hesitated. "Twenty-four hours. Maybe fo

"How can I help you?""I need a paternity test," Julian said, his voice low. "Expedited. I need results within forty-eight hours."The receptionist's eyebrows rose slightly. "That's... unusual. Most paternity tests take two weeks.""I don't have two weeks," Julian said, setting a check on the counter. "And I'm willing to pay for the urgency."The receptionist looked at the check. Elena hadn't noticed the black car across the street. She'd been too busy laughing at Leo's attempt to climb the tree, too focused on making sure Lucas didn't fall off the swing, too distracted by James's terrible jokes about the grocery shopping."Mommy, look!" Leo shouted, hanging upside down from a branch. "I'm a monkey!""I see, baby!" Elena called back, smiling. "But please don't fall!"Lucas, more cautious, was pumping his legs on the swing, trying to go higher. "Mommy, push me!"Elena walked over, giving him a gentle push. "Higher?""Higher!" he demanded. She laughed, pushing him again. "Okay, but don't go too high."James came out of the house, wiping his hands on a dish towel. "Lunch is ready. I made grilled cheese."Elena's stomach growled. "You're a lifesaver. I'm starving."The boys came running, both of them grabbing James's hands."Daddy, can we have fries with that?" Leo asked.James's face softened. "If your mom says yes."Both boys turned to Elena, their eyes wide and
