Everything moved faster than Elena expected.

Within forty-eight hours, James Patterson had arranged everything. A new passport, expedited through connections he refused to explain. A temporary visa, sponsored by the family's Canadian foundation. Plane tickets under a different name—Elena Moore, a name James said was common enough to avoid detection.

"It's not permanent," he'd told her. "Just until we can get you proper legal protection. Once you're in Canada, we can file for asylum if needed. Or we can challenge the trust transfer from there, where Hartley can't touch you."

Elena had nodded, trying to absorb it all. It felt like a dream. Or a nightmare. She couldn't tell anymore.

The night before discharge, Elena packed her few belongings.

The hospital had given her a small bag—clothes donated by the charity ward, a pair of shoes that were slightly too big, a toothbrush and toiletries. That was all she owned now. Everything else—her dresses, her jewelry, the things her father had given her—belonged to Daniel.

She sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the bag.

A knock at the door.

She looked up. James stood there, holding a coat.

"It's cold in Toronto," he said, stepping in. "Warmer than you'd think in summer, but the evenings get chilly. You'll need this."

He held out the coat. It was simple—navy blue, wool, nothing fancy. But it looked warm.

Elena took it, her throat tight. "Thank you."

James hesitated. "I know this is overwhelming. Leaving everything behind. But you're making the right choice."

"Am I?" Elena looked down. "I'm running away. That doesn't feel very brave."

"Sometimes running away is the bravest thing you can do," James said quietly. "Especially when staying means letting someone destroy you."

Elena didn't answer. She just folded the coat carefully and placed it in her bag.

"Mom's waiting in the car," James said. "We're leaving in an hour. Are you ready?"

Elena took a deep breath.

"No," she said honestly. "But I'll go anyway."

James smiled. "That's all any of us can do."

They left through the staff entrance.

Robert had arranged it—a nurse friend who owed him a favor. They slipped out while the night shift was changing, avoiding the main lobby where Daniel's driver usually waited.

Elena kept her head down, heart pounding. Every shadow looked like Daniel. Every voice sounded like his.

But no one stopped them.

The car was a black SUV, parked in the loading zone with the engine running. Maggie sat in the back, wrapped in a thick blanket, smiling when she saw Elena.

"Come on, dear," she said, patting the seat beside her. "Plenty of room."

Elena climbed in, settling next to her. Robert took the front passenger seat, while James drove.

As the car pulled out of the hospital parking lot, Elena looked back one last time.

The building disappeared into the night.

And with it, the life she'd known.

Three Weeks Later — Toronto, Canada

The Patterson family estate was nothing like Elena had imagined.

Not a mansion, but not small either. A comfortable house in a quiet neighborhood, surrounded by trees and gardens. Maggie had pointed out the rose bushes as they arrived, proudly announcing that she'd planted them herself.

"They're not blooming yet," she'd said. "But give them time. They'll be beautiful by summer."

Elena had nodded, too overwhelmed to respond.

Inside, the house was warm. Filled with photos, books, the smell of cinnamon and old wood. Maggie's grandchildren lived nearby and visited often, their laughter echoing through the halls.

For the first time in weeks, Elena felt safe.

But safety came with its own fears.

It started on a Tuesday morning.

Elena woke up with a dull ache in her lower abdomen. Nothing severe, just… off. She'd been feeling it for a few days, actually. Fatigue. Nausea in the mornings. A strange sensitivity to smells.

She'd ignored it. Blamed it on stress, on the move, on everything her body had been through.

But now, standing in the Pattersons' bathroom, staring at her reflection in the mirror, a new thought crept in.

Her period was late.

Three weeks late.

She'd told herself it was the stress. The head injury. The trauma. All of it could throw off her cycle.

But what if it wasn't?

What if—

No. She couldn't think about that. Not now. Not when she was finally safe.

She turned on the tap, splashing cold water on her face.

It's nothing. Just stress. It has to be.

But deep down, she knew.

Some secrets didn't stay buried.

The doctor arrived within thirty minutes. He was a small, efficient man who'd been treating Julian for years. He took one look at Elena and got to work."Her pupils are dilated," he muttered, checking her eyes. "Heart rate elevated. Body temperature high. What was she given?""I don't know," Julian said, pacing. "She was kidnapped. Taken to a club. I found her before... before anything happened."The doctor nodded, pulling out a syringe. "I'm going to give her something to help her sleep. To calm her system. It won't reverse the drugs completely, but it'll help her body process them faster."He injected the medication into Elena's arm.Within minutes, her breathing evened out. Her body relaxed. But she was still burning up."Cold compresses," the doctor ordered. "Keep her cool. Change them every fifteen minutes. If her temperature doesn't drop within two hours, call me."Julian nodded. "How long until the drugs are out of her system?"The doctor hesitated. "Twenty-four hours. Maybe fo

Julian's hands were shaking. The envelope sat on his desk, unopened. The lab had called an hour ago, their voice professional but urgent."Mr. Vance, the results are ready. The DNA testing facility was discreet, located in a medical plaza in Westwood.Julian walked in at 4:30 PM, the hair sample carefully sealed in a small envelope in his pocket. The receptionist looked up, smiling professionally. "How can I help you?""I need a paternity test," Julian said, his voice low. "Expedited. I need results within forty-eight hours."The receptionist's eyebrows rose slightly. "That's... unusual. Most paternity tests take two weeks.""I don't have two weeks," Julian said, setting a check on the counter. "And I'm willing to pay for the urgency."The receptionist looked at the check. Her eyes widened."Let me get the lab technician," she said immediately. An hour later, Julian walked out.The sample was submitted. Elena hadn't noticed the black car across the street. She'd been too busy laughing at Leo's attempt to climb the tree, too focused on making sure Lucas didn't fall off the swing, too distracted by James's terrible jokes about the grocery shopping."Mommy, look!" Leo shouted, hanging upside down from a branch. "I'm a monkey!""I see, baby!" Elena called back, smiling. "But please don't fall!"Lucas, more cautious, was pumping his legs on the swing, trying to go higher. "Mommy, push me!"Elena walked over, giving him a gentle push. "Higher?""Higher!" he demanded. She laughed, pushing him again. "Okay, but don't go too high."James came out of the house, wiping his hands on a dish towel. "Lunch is ready. I made grilled cheese."Elena's stomach growled. "You're a lifesaver. I'm starving."The boys came running, both of them grabbing James's hands."Daddy, can we have fries with that?" Leo asked.James's face softened. "If your mom says yes."Both boys turned to Elena, their eyes wide and

Julian didn't sleep that night. He lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, his mind racing.Children.Elena had children.Twin boys, probably four years old. The same age they would be if...No.He couldn't think about that. Couldn't let his mind go there.Because if those boys were his... if she'd kept them from him for four years...The thought made his chest burn with anger. With hurt. With something he didn't want to name.At 6 AM, he gave up on sleep.Julian got out of bed, showered, dressed, and was in his office by 7 AM.Marcus arrived at 8 AM, looking slightly surprised to find his boss already at work."Sir," Marcus said, setting down his briefcase. "You're here early."Julian didn't look up from his computer. "I need Elena Moore's address."Marcus froze. "Sir... that's not—""I don't care if it's legal," Julian interrupted, his voice cold. "I don't care if it's ethical. I need her address. Now."Marcus hesitated. Then he sighed, pulling out his phone. "I'll have it within the ho

The Grand Ballroom of the Beverly Hills Hotel was glittering.Crystal chandeliers cast soft light over the crowd of Los Angeles's elite. Designers, CEOs, investors, and influencers mingled over champagne and hors d'oeuvres, all dressed in their finest. This was the event of the season. The annual Tech & Innovation Gala. And Elena Moore had been invited.Elena hadn't wanted to come."I'm not a gala person, James," she'd argued that morning. "I'd rather stay home and work on the quarterly reports."James had fixed her with a look. "Elena, you've been working nonstop for weeks. You need to get out. Network. Breathe.""I breathe fine at my desk," she'd muttered. But James had already bought her dress. A stunning emerald green gown that hugged her curves and made her skin glow. He'd arranged for hair and makeup. Had even coordinated with her assistant to clear her schedule."You're going," he'd said firmly. "And you're going to enjoy it."So here she was.Hair swept up in an elegant chigno
