Chapter 9 — The First Kick

Week fourteen brought relief.

The morning sickness faded slowly, like a storm finally passing. Elena could keep food down. Could walk through the bookstore without feeling dizzy. Could look at her reflection and see color returning to her cheeks.

But the real change came on a quiet Tuesday evening.

Elena was sitting on the couch in the Pattersons' living room, one hand resting absently on her still-flat stomach. She'd just finished a shift at the bookstore and was too tired to move, so she'd stayed in her coat, letting the warmth of the fireplace seep into her bones.

Then she felt it.

A flutter. Small. Barely there. Like a butterfly brushing against her skin from the inside.

Elena froze.

She held her breath, waiting.

Another flutter. Stronger this time. Undeniable.

Her hand pressed harder against her stomach, tears springing to her eyes.

"You're in there," she whispered. "You're really in there."

It wasn't much. Just a tiny movement. But it was enough to make everything real. The baby wasn't just a idea anymore. It was a person. Growing. Living. Depending on her.

Elena leaned back, closing her eyes.

"I'll protect you," she promised softly. "No matter what. I'll protect you."

By week sixteen, Elena's savings account had grown more than she'd expected.

Between her bookstore wages and the extra shifts she'd picked up—weekend inventory, holiday sales, even helping Sarah with online orders—she'd managed to save enough for the basics. Diapers. A crib. Clothes. A small emergency fund.

It wasn't much. But it was hers.

One evening, she sat at the kitchen table with her bank statement spread out in front of her, adding up the numbers for the third time.

Maggie walked in, carrying tea.

"You're doing it again," she said, setting a mug down. "Counting money like it might disappear."

Elena smiled. "I just want to make sure I have enough."

"You have more than enough," Maggie said, sitting beside her. "And if you don't, we'll help. That's what family does."

Elena's throat tightened. "I know. But I want to do this on my own. For the baby. So they know… so they know their mama fought for them."

Maggie's hand covered hers. "Your baby will know that no matter what. Because you're already fighting. Every day."

Elena looked down at her stomach, now just barely starting to round. "I hope so."

James continued to help, whether she wanted him to or not.

He drove her to appointments. Picked up her prenatal vitamins. Made sure there was always food in the kitchen that didn't make her nauseous.

But Elena kept her distance.

She thanked him politely. Accepted the help because she had no choice. But she didn't encourage him. Didn't smile too long. Didn't let herself read into the way he looked at her.

Because she knew what happened when women like her got hopeful about men like him.

Men with money. Men with families. Men who could walk away whenever they wanted.

She wouldn't make that mistake again.

One afternoon, James showed up at the bookstore unannounced.

Elena was restocking shelves when she heard his voice behind her.

"Sarah said you were working late."

She turned, surprised. "What are you doing here?"

James held up a bag. "Dinner. You missed lunch again, didn't you?"

Elena's stomach growled before she could answer. She flushed. "I was busy."

"I know." James set the bag on the counter. "That's why I brought it. Eat."

Elena hesitated. "James, you don't have to—"

"I know I don't have to," he interrupted gently. "But I want to. So let me."

Elena looked at him. Really looked at him.

He was handsome, she supposed. In a polished, corporate way. Kind eyes. Careful hands. The kind of man her old life would have approved of.

But she didn't feel anything. Not the way she should.

And that scared her more than she wanted to admit.

"Thank you," she said quietly. "But I need to finish this shift first."

James nodded. "I'll wait."

He sat in the corner of the store, scrolling through his phone while she worked. Every time she glanced at him, he was watching her. Not in a creepy way. Just… present. Like he wanted to make sure she was okay.

When her shift ended, he walked her to the car.

"Can I take you to dinner?" he asked. "Just as friends. No pressure."

Elena shook her head. "I should get home. Maggie's expecting me."

James's expression didn't change, but something flickered in his eyes. Disappointment, maybe. Or understanding.

"Okay," he said. "Next time, then."

Elena didn't answer. She just got in the car and looked out the window.

She knew James cared about her. Knew he wanted more than friendship.

But she couldn't give him that. Not now. Not when her heart was still broken. Not when she was carrying a baby conceived in a moment of weakness and despair.

Not when she still didn't know if she'd ever find out who the father was.

That night, alone in her room, Elena pulled out the small box she kept hidden in her closet.

Inside was the pregnancy test. The one from that first day.

She stared at the two lines, her mind drifting back to that hotel room. To the man whose face she could barely remember. To the night that had changed everything.

Should she try to find him?

The thought had been creeping in more often lately. With modern technology, it wouldn't be impossible. DNA tests. Private investigators. The Pattersons had resources.

But what if she found him and he didn't want her? What if he was married? What if he looked at her like she was nothing?

What if he was worse than Daniel?

Elena closed the box, setting it back in the closet.

Not yet.

Maybe not ever.

Some secrets were better left buried.

The doctor arrived within thirty minutes. He was a small, efficient man who'd been treating Julian for years. He took one look at Elena and got to work."Her pupils are dilated," he muttered, checking her eyes. "Heart rate elevated. Body temperature high. What was she given?""I don't know," Julian said, pacing. "She was kidnapped. Taken to a club. I found her before... before anything happened."The doctor nodded, pulling out a syringe. "I'm going to give her something to help her sleep. To calm her system. It won't reverse the drugs completely, but it'll help her body process them faster."He injected the medication into Elena's arm.Within minutes, her breathing evened out. Her body relaxed. But she was still burning up."Cold compresses," the doctor ordered. "Keep her cool. Change them every fifteen minutes. If her temperature doesn't drop within two hours, call me."Julian nodded. "How long until the drugs are out of her system?"The doctor hesitated. "Twenty-four hours. Maybe fo

Elena hadn't noticed the black car across the street. She'd been too busy laughing at Leo's attempt to climb the tree, too focused on making sure Lucas didn't fall off the swing, too distracted by James's terrible jokes about the grocery shopping."Mommy, look!" Leo shouted, hanging upside down from a branch. "I'm a monkey!""I see, baby!" Elena called back, smiling. "But please don't fall!"Lucas, more cautious, was pumping his legs on the swing, trying to go higher. "Mommy, push me!"Elena walked over, giving him a gentle push. "Higher?""Higher!" he demanded. She laughed, pushing him again. "Okay, but don't go too high."James came out of the house, wiping his hands on a dish towel. "Lunch is ready. I made grilled cheese."Elena's stomach growled. "You're a lifesaver. I'm starving."The boys came running, both of them grabbing James's hands."Daddy, can we have fries with that?" Leo asked.James's face softened. "If your mom says yes."Both boys turned to Elena, their eyes wide and
