CHAPTER FIVE

The apartment felt bigger at night when I was alone in it. I sat curled up on the couch with my laptop open, and a half-eaten bowl of noodles was already going cold beside me. I had found Henry's fan community page three weeks ago by accident and had been stalking it ever since. Thousands of people posting about a man I lived with, analysing his interviews, dissecting his expressions, writing long threads about how much they loved him.

I scrolled slowly, without looking for anything in particular. Then I saw a photo. It was a selfie that was posted an hour ago by a fan account. Henry and a female singer named Aria West were sitting close together. His head was tilted slightly toward hers, their cheeks were so close to each other that they almost touched, and her hand was on his shoulder. Her hands were so small and smooth like a baby's hands.

The comments on the photo were already flooded with writings from different delusional girls:

@urgirl567: They have such amazing chemistry 🤭

@henryleftkidney: Can we talk about how good they look together? Henry and Aria collab when???

@queen_diva: Sorry, but his wife should be worried lol.

@henrystalker: Aria move. It’s my turn now 😭😩

There were just a lot of comments. I couldn’t read them all, so I closed the laptop and stared into thin air.

My phone rang. At first I thought it was Henry, but it was my mum. I picked it up immediately.

“Hi mum, good evening.”

“Quinn. I've been meaning to call, but I keep forgetting. How are you? How is my son-in-law? Is he treating you well?”

"He's busy," I said. “... with work, of course.”

“Ah, these celebrity husbands.” She laughed warmly. “You knew what you were signing up for, my dear. Just be patient and supportive. That's what a good wife should do.”

I pressed my lips together. “Yes, Mom. I hear you.”

“Speaking of which,” her voice shifted into another tone. “Quinn, my one and only baby girl, when are you going to give me a grandchild? You know you've been married long enough now. I know Henry is kind of busy, but you know it never just ends; that's the nature of his job. And, you are now settled with your job and—”

“Mom.” My voice came out flat because I was angry. She just doesn’t understand how I live in the same house as him or what I am silently going through.

“I'm just asking, you know, married people of nowadays don’t—”

“Mum. If you want a child so badly, your husband is still alive.”

She went quiet. I heard her take a sharp breath in on the other end of the line. In the background, I could hear the television, the familiar sounds of my childhood home, and underneath it all, I heard my own heartbeat in my ears. I shouldn’t have said that. What is wrong with me?

“Mum, I’m kind of busy right now. Let’s talk later,” I said as I ended the call.

I sat there in the quiet apartment, staring at nothing. The laptop was closed. My noodles were cold. The internet was busy shipping Henry with another woman while I snapped at my mother on the phone.

I opened the laptop again and stared at the fan community page. The picture was still full. I stared at the lady’s hand.

I remembered when Henry got me a very good hand cream when we were in college. It will make my hands soft and protect my skin after cooking. He would always tell me that he was jealous that my beautiful hands were cooking for someone else. We were in our third year when we started dating. He was my dream guy, and I’m sure he was also the dream guy of many other girls. I always felt like the chosen girl or y/n whenever we walked through campus holding hands. It was all in the past now, and none of it feels real anymore.

If only Henry could come home like he did yesterday, I’d be so happy. I thought as I closed the laptop, turned off the lights, and went to bed.

I went to work early the next morning because I had to confirm an order.

The drive back home in the afternoon was slow; traffic was thick and unmoving. By the time I turned onto our street, the sun was already low and orange behind the buildings, and I was tired.

I immediately noticed the car parked outside our building. It was a black van. It was the one Chris—Henry’s manager drove. I parked and went inside. The apartment door was unlocked; it was just slightly closed. Good, Henry must be back. I had a lot to ask him and talk to him about. I pushed the door open.

Chris arrived the next afternoon with a single sheet of paper inside a folder, which he placed on our kitchen table before taking a seat. When I looked at the content of the paper, I immediately understood that we were not about to have a conversation about what happened, but were instead being handed another script to follow.“This is what we’re releasing,” he said. “Both of you need to be aligned on it before it goes out.”Henry picked it up and read it silently. When he finished, he slid it across the table to me without saying anything, and I looked down at the statement.Neither Henry nor Quinn Brown had any contact with the deceased on the night in question. Reports suggesting otherwise are false and are being investigated as potential defamation.

  • Married to the Devil   CHAPTER FORTY ONE

News of what happened to me outside the company spread fast and wide. It did not go quite in the direction Henry’s agency wanted.By the following morning, the story had already moved beyond the people who had been at the protest. Entertainment pages picked it up. Gossip accounts reposted the videos. People who had never heard of me before were suddenly discussing me like they knew who I was. There was a photograph of me.Someone had edited the photo of me at the award show I attended with Henry together with a photograph someone took during the chaos outside the company. In the second photograph, I was on the ground, my hand pressed against the pavement, my face twisted in pain and confusion. The two pictures were plac

I hadn’t told Henry what I was planning. If I had, he would have stopped me.A stubborn, desperate part of me needed to do something with my hands and my voice instead of sitting inside our apartment, watching him fold in on himself one day at a time.I only wanted to drop off supplies that happened to be near his company, which was technically true, if not the whole truth.I parked two streets away and walked the rest of the distance on foot, telling myself I would just look. Just see the crowd for myself. Understand the scale of what we were dealing with before deciding whether there was anything I could actually do about it.The crowd had grown even larger than the news footage suggested, spilling off the sidewalk and partially into the street. That evening, the video had already been viewed and reposted millions of times.By the next morning, people had turned against Henry. Fans protested outside the company. The crowd outside Henry’s agency had grown large enough to make the local news on its own.I watched the footage over the breakfast Henry had ordered. My spoon was forgotten halfway to my mouth as the camera panned across dozens of people holding handmade signs outside the company’s glass entrance.JUSTICE FOR JULIET, one read in thick black marker.WE WANT ANSWERS, said another.A woman near the front, her voice hoarse from what looked like hours of chanting, leaned into a reporter’s microphone with a serious expression.“He owes her family an explanation,” she said. “He owes all of us an explanation. Now she’s dead, and his company wants us to believe it’s because she was crazy? We’re not buying it.”Henry sat across the table from me, not eating either, his eyes fixed on the same footage. His expression was difficu

Henry's phone rang. It was Chris. He answered and put the call on speaker."Henry." Chris's voice came through immediately. "Turn on your television. Right now.""What is it?" Henry asked."Just turn it on."Henry grabbed the remote from the counter, and the screen flickered to life on a news channel that was already in the middle of a segment.A chyron was scrolling across the bottom of the screen.Disturbing Video Surfaces From Deceased Woman Linked to Popular Actor."Oh God," Henry said quietly. He turned and hurried toward the kitchen.

By afternoon, the story had grown legs of its own online. Some people defended Henry outright, calling Juliet unstable and dangerous, saying she deserved whatever karma had come back to her. People created their own theories and connected things that didn't actually make sense. They defended Henry as if they knew him personally.Others weren't so kind. They kept asking why a former assistant would become so distressed that she would end up dead so close to his company. They claimed something must have happened before her death. To them, it couldn't be a coincidence that she had ended up at the company building that night.Whatever the company's statement had claimed, this story was nowhere near finished. It had only just begu
