Chapter 1

"What? Did you say you're willing to marry the ruthless mafia Don who kills without qualms in your sister's place?"

My parents' eyes widened as they stared at me in disbelief.

I answered calmly, "Yes."

My sister, Jovina Valenti, frowned suspiciously. "Why are you suddenly willing to sacrifice yourself? You're planning to run away at the last minute, aren't you?"

I sneered, "Then I won't marry him. You can do it yourself. That way, Papa and Mama won't have to worry either."

Only then did my parents seem to fully process what I had said. They came over to me, wearing righteous expressions and claiming that this was all for my own good.

I couldn't help but find it absurd. In both lifetimes, the only instances when my parents treated me with so much warmth were when they were pushing me into a hellish pit.

In my previous life, the mafia Don, Carlo Laguardia, specifically stated that the woman he wanted to marry was Jovina. However, she was determined to pursue a love that was hers and wouldn't go through with the marriage no matter the circumstances.

To save and protect their beloved daughter, my parents drugged me and married me off to Carlo even when they knew how unwilling I was.

My mama, Giorgio Natale, had choked back sobs as she said, "Carlo has overwhelming power and influence in the country. We can't escape him. If we don't go through with this marriage, none of us will survive!"

My papa, Luigi Valenti, had chimed in callously, "Nerissa, you and Jovina are twins. You look almost identical. You have to marry Carlo in Jovina's place this time. If you refuse, you'll spend the rest of your life locked in the basement while Carlo and his men come and lay waste to our family."

Left with no choice, I was forced to marry Carlo. Because of that, I never warmed up to him or gave him the time of day.

We were so indifferent to each other that our relationship was even more distant than that of strangers.

I thought I would spend the rest of my life like that forever. However, Jovina suddenly returned to the country. Because of her false claims, what minuscule trust Carlo had in me vanished completely. I ended up freezing to death in the ice house.

When I opened my eyes again, I realized I had gone back in time to the very moment Jovina refused the marriage. This time, I would not let history repeat itself! I had to win Carlo's heart no matter what!

"I'll marry Carlo in Jovina's place," I repeated firmly.

Upon receiving my assurance again, Mama was overjoyed. "That's wonderful! Jovi, go pack right now. We'll send you abroad overnight. Carlo's men won't be able to follow you there."

Papa visibly relaxed too, but his eyes didn't show the slightest trace of pity for me. "It's settled, then. I'll go talk to Carlo's men, and they'll take you away."

"Wait!" Jovina interrupted with a calculating expression on her face.

She went on, "What if we're found out? Why don't we hold a funeral and say Nerissa accidentally fell into the sea and died? Then, she can take my identity and marry him. That way, no one will suspect a thing."

Papa agreed immediately, "I'll make the arrangements and spread the news that you fell into the sea. We'll hold the funeral tomorrow morning. In the afternoon, the Laguardia family will come to take you."

Once everything was decided, my parents dressed me in Jovina's clothes. Late the next night, they secretly sent Jovina out of the city while I got into the car Carlo had sent.

In my previous life, I was extremely fearful of Carlo after marrying him. So, I was resistant and guarded toward him. As a result, our eight years of marriage were filled with nothing but icy distance and resentment.

Now that I had gotten a second chance at life, I cast aside my past prejudice and looked once more at the man sitting in the study.

Carlo held a cigar between his fingers. His tall, handsome figure was draped in a tailored suit. His hair was slicked back, leaving his blue-gray eyes that were deep and unfathomable on full display. To my surprise, they seemed to carry a hint of gentleness.

Setting aside his ruthless reputation as the Don, he had a naturally intimidating presence due to his calm and reserved disposition.

He possessed immense power, yet he showed warmth and protectiveness toward his own family.

To be honest, I was lucky to have the opportunity to stay by his side.

The first thing Carlo said upon seeing me was, "You don't need to do anything when you're by my side. Just behave yourself." His tone was composed and firm.

Instead of the indifference I constantly showed in my previous life, I took the initiative to hook my arm through his this time. In a soft and gentle voice, I said, "I understand, caro mio. I promise I won't cause you any trouble in the future."

I truly wanted to have a child with Carlo. I wanted a child that belonged to the two of us. It was not to secure my position or to please him. I simply wanted to build a complete family with him and protect our happiness together.Carlo froze for a moment and held me tightly in his arms. "Alright. Let's have children. Preferably a son and a daughter. The girl will be gentle like you, and the boy will be protective like me."Half a year later, I had a rounded belly. One afternoon, my best friend accompanied me to a high-end maternity store to pick out baby supplies. Just as we reached the entrance, we heard fierce arguing in the distance. There was also the sound of a woman crying.A burly man was beating a woman mercilessly and cursing, "You bitch! You were secretly stashing money so that you could run away, huh? I'll break your legs today! Don't think you can run away with my money! No way I'll let that happen!"The woman was covered in wounds, and her clothes were torn and tatte

The wooden club came down on Papa's body, and his wails instantly echoed through the living room. Tears and snot covered his face as he shielded himself from the blows. Before long, he was beaten until he lay flat against the floor, unable to get back up. All he could do was let out weak groans.Carlo's gaze slowly shifted to Mama and Jovina. "You two, slap each other until I'm satisfied."They trembled all over and slowly raised their hands. However, they merely touched each other lightly and didn't dare to use any force at all.Carlo shot his subordinates a look, and both women panicked at once. Clenching their teeth, they slapped each other's faces without holding back. Smacks rang out one after another in the room. Before long, both Mama's and Jovina's cheeks were swollen and red, yet neither of them dared to stop. After quite some time, Carlo said evenly, "That's enough. After all, you're Rissa's parents. You gave her life, so I'll spare your lives."Mama immediately crawled

Mama hurriedly put on a fawning smile. "Don Laguardia, we're all family. What accounts are there to settle? Jovina is young and ignorant. We've realized our mistake too. Please be merciful and forgive us this once!"Carlo raised a brow as his gaze landed on the wounds all over my body. "Family? You injured my wife badly and even joined hands to scheme against her. You tried to let Jovina replace her. Do you think I'll let this go and write it all off?"Papa hastily argued in a flustered tone, "No, Don Laguardia. We never wanted to kill her! She misunderstood us. We only wanted to persuade her to behave herself. We never intended to harm her!"I sneered, "Oh, so you're denying it now? Back at the villa, Jovina held a knife and tried to kill me. You were right there helping her. Why didn't you remember that I was also your daughter at that time?"Carlo's gaze darkened instantly, and his voice turned icy. "You wanted to kill her?""No! Don't listen to her nonsense, Don Laguardia. She

Jovina collapsed onto the floor heavily. She was on the brink of losing her mind. She pointed at me and screamed hysterically, "You bitch! What kind of spell did you put on him to make him so devoted to you? You said you'd marry him in my place back then. You did it on purpose! You wanted to steal my wealth, my status, and my man!"I looked up and wiped away my tears. Then, I looked at her calmly and said, "Who was it who cried and said she would rather die than marry the Don back then? Who said that even if she were to die, she would choose to die with her true love than to step into this mire?""Shut up!" Jovina shouted loudly, her face pale. She attempted to drown my words that hit her sore spot."The one who should shut up is you," Carlo hissed. His gaze turned sharp. His subordinates restrained Jovina instantly. Their merciless and rough movements made her cry out in pain. Instantly, her eyes reddened and brimmed with tears as she tried to gain sympathy by acting weak.Ther

My parents instantly started panicking. They clamped down on my arms and refused to let me move an inch, their eyes full of warning.Jovina was so frantic that her voice trembled. "Caro mio, what nonsense is this? She's Nerissa, my younger sister! I'm your wife, Jovina!"Carlo smirked slightly. His tone was calm, yet his words struck them like a bolt from the blue. "That's right. My wife is Nerissa."My whole body shook due to the raw emotions crashing down on me. Tears surged to my eyes at once. Carlo knew… He had known all along!Mama rushed forward, forcing a smile as she argued, "Don Laguardia, you're mistaken. This is Jovina! Don't be confused by their similarity!""Could I mistake my own wife?" The faint smile in Carlo's eyes faded completely. As he swept his gaze over Papa's hands gripping me, his voice turned colder. "What is this? Are you trying to stop me from taking back my wife?"Papa's face went deathly pale, yet he still insisted, "No, Don Laguardia. You really

It was Carlo! My heart leaped with joy. I threw open the wardrobe doors and screamed with all my strength, "Carlo! Save me! I'm here!"Jovina's face went deathly pale. She hurriedly signaled Papa to cover my mouth.Forcing herself to stay calm, she went out to open the door and squeezed a gentle smile. "Why are you here, caro mio? I came to see Nerissa. Our parents brought her here to recover from her injuries. She's upset again, so I wanted to talk some sense into her."Carlo stood at the doorway, the emotions in his eyes unfathomable. It was as if terrifying hostility lurked beneath the surface."Talk some sense into her?" His voice was frigid as his gaze settled on Jovina. "What kind of conversation would require locking the door and surrounding her with so many men?"Her eyes darted around aversively, but she still hastily explained, "No, but… You see, Nerissa was emotionally unstable and refused to listen. So, I asked our parents to help keep an eye on her. I was afraid sh
