Chapter 12: A Photograph From the Past

Elena could barely breathe.

The necklace rested in her trembling hand while Damian stood across from her, watching the shock spread across her face. For years, she had believed she knew the little she was allowed to know about her mother. She had been told that her mother disappeared when Elena was very young, leaving behind nothing but a few photographs and memories that became less clear with every passing year.

Now Damian was telling her that the necklace had belonged to her.

And somehow, his family had been involved.

“You said my mother gave this to your father,” Elena whispered. “When?”

“Twenty-five years ago.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

She looked at him in disbelief.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I expect you to understand that I wasn't there.”

“But your father was.”

Damian's expression tightened.

“Yes.”

Elena looked back at the wall, searching through the photographs with desperate eyes. There had to be something else, some detail she had missed.

Then she noticed a photograph tucked behind another frame.

She pulled it free.

Her hands stopped moving.

It showed three people standing outside the Moretti estate.

Her father.

Damian's father.

And her mother.

Elena stared at the woman in the photograph, studying the familiar eyes and soft smile she had spent her childhood imagining.

“That’s her.”

Her voice broke.

Damian stepped beside her.

“Yes.”

“She was here.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't my father ever tell me?”

Damian didn't answer.

Elena turned toward him.

“Why did they hide this from me?”

“Because whatever happened that night was dangerous enough to make both families keep silent.”

“What happened?”

“I told you, I don't know everything.”

She looked at him for a long moment.

“Then find out.”

Damian's eyes met hers.

“I will.”

Before Elena could say anything else, something slipped from behind the photograph and fell to the floor.

A small folded piece of paper.

She picked it up and opened it.

There was only one sentence written inside.

If Elena ever discovers the truth, keep her away from the Moretti bloodline.

Her eyes slowly lifted.

“Damian…”

He took the paper from her.

His expression changed as he read it.

“What does that mean?”

He didn't answer.

“Damian, what does it mean?”

He folded the paper carefully and placed it in his pocket.

“It means someone knew this day would come.”

Elena's heart sank.

“And they were afraid of what I would discover.”

Damian stepped closer.

“They should have been.”

She stared at him.

“For once, don't protect me with silence.”

His gaze softened slightly.

“You're not ready for everything.”

“You don't get to decide that anymore.”

A long silence passed between them.

Finally, Damian nodded.

“Then I'll show you what I know.”

He reached toward one of the locked cabinets.

But before he could open it, his phone rang.

He answered.

His expression immediately hardened.

“What happened?”

He listened for several seconds.

Then his eyes moved toward Elena.

“Don't let anyone leave the estate.”

He ended the call.

Elena's stomach tightened.

“What now?”

Damian looked at her.

“Adrian is gone.”

Her heart stopped.

“What do you mean, gone?”

“He disappeared before my men could reach him.”

Damian's voice lowered.

“And he left something behind.”

“What?”

“A photograph.”

He pulled it from his pocket.

Elena looked at it.

Her blood ran cold.

It showed her mother.

Alive.

And standing beside a much younger Damian.

Damian's men were moving through the lower floors, checking every room while the security system flashed red across several monitors.Damian took Elena's hand.“Stay with me.”This time, she didn't argue. They reached the staircase when a loud noise came from the library.Damian immediately pulled her behind him.Two of his men entered the room with their weapons drawn.A few seconds later, one of them called out.“Nothing here.”Damian's eyes narrowed.“Check again.”Elena noticed something on the floor.A photograph. She picked it up.It was another pictur

Chapter 11: The Hidden RoomElena barely slept that night.Every time she closed her eyes, she remembered the gunshot at the old Moretti property, the envelope at Damian's feet, and the warning written across it.Someone was watching her.Someone knew about her marriage. And, more importantly, someone seemed to know things about her father that she had never been told.By morning, Elena had made a decision. She needed answers. She left her bedroom quietly and walked through the second floor of the mansion while the house was still unusually quiet. Damian had spent most of the night in his office with his men, and she had no intention of waiting for him to decide what she was allowed to know. She stopped when she reached the western corridor. The west wing. The one place Damian had specifically forbidden her from entering.Elena looked toward the staircase behind her.Nobody was there. She slowly pushed the door open. The corridor beyond was darker than the rest of the mansion, with he

Chapter 10: His JealousyThe drive back to the Moretti estate was painfully quiet.Elena sat beside the window, staring at the city lights passing outside while Damian remained beside her, his expression unreadable. His men had already searched the old property, but whoever had attacked them was gone. The envelope was still in Damian’s hand.He had said almost nothing since they left.Elena finally turned toward him.“You’re angry.”“I’m always angry.”“This is different.”Damian looked at her, his eyes meeting hers for only a moment before returning to the road ahead.“You were almost killed tonight.”“And I’m still alive.”“That isn’t the point.”“Then what is?”His jaw tightened.“The point is that I told you to stay beside me, and you nearly walked into a trap.”Elena frowned. “I stayed beside you.”“You walked toward that photograph without telling me.”“Because I saw my father.”“You could have been shot.”“So could you.”Damian turned his head slightly.“That doesn’t matter.”E

Chapter 9: The First ThreatThe old Moretti property stood at the edge of the city, hidden behind tall iron gates and a line of dark trees that seemed to swallow the moonlight. It had once belonged to Damian’s grandfather, but according to Damian, the house had been abandoned for years.Yet someone had been using it.The moment Elena stepped out of the car, she felt the strange heaviness in the air. Nothing moved around them, but the silence was too perfect, too deliberate. Damian noticed her hesitation and moved closer without saying a word, his eyes scanning the property before he finally looked at her.“Stay beside me.”Elena glanced at him. “You say that as if I was planning to run into a dangerous house alone.”“I know you well enough to know you might.”She almost smiled, but the expression disappeared when Damian’s men approached the entrance and forced the old door open.Inside, the house smelled of dust and damp wood. Their footsteps echoed through the empty hallway as Damian
