Chapter Two: The Mafia King

The inside of the car was unnervingly quiet, except for the steady sound of rain striking the windows. Elena sat rigidly in the passenger seat, her fingers gripping the edge of Damian's coat as she stared through the glass at the city disappearing behind them. Every few seconds, she glanced at the man beside her, hoping to find some indication of what he intended to do with her, but Damian's face remained completely unreadable.

He drove with one hand resting casually on the steering wheel, as though he hadn't just taken a frightened woman away from a house where armed men had been searching for her.

"Where are you taking me?" Elena finally asked.

"Somewhere safe."

"Safe for whom?"

Damian's eyes briefly met hers through the rearview mirror before returning to the road.

"For you."

She let out a quiet, bitter laugh. "You expect me to believe that after everything that happened tonight?"

"No."

His simple answer made her frown.

"Then why should I come with you?"

"Because the people who attacked your house aren't finished."

A chill ran through her.

"What do they want?"

"You."

Elena's heart sank. "Why?"

Damian didn't answer immediately. Instead, he turned onto a darker road leading away from the city center, where the buildings became fewer and the streets quieter.

"Your father knew something he shouldn't have known," he finally said.

Elena turned toward him. "You knew my father?"

"Yes."

"How?"

"That's a conversation for later."

"There might not be a later if you don't tell me what's happening now."

For the first time, Damian looked directly at her.

"You want answers. I understand that. But tonight isn't the night to get them."

"That's convenient."

His jaw tightened slightly, but his voice remained calm.

"Your father was involved with people who don't forgive betrayal. Whatever happened tonight wasn't random, Elena. They came looking for something, and they believed your father had it."

"What?"

"I don't know."

She stared at him suspiciously. "You're lying."

"Maybe."

The answer left her speechless.

Damian didn't seem interested in pretending to be trustworthy, and somehow that frightened her more than an obvious lie would have.

After several minutes, the car passed through a large iron gate. Elena looked outside and saw an enormous mansion surrounded by high walls, security cameras, and several armed men positioned around the property.

Her stomach tightened.

"This is your house?"

"One of them."

She slowly turned toward him.

"Why does a man need more than one house?"

"Because a man in my position needs somewhere to disappear when necessary."

The gates closed behind them.

Damian parked near the entrance and turned off the engine.

Before Elena could open the door, he spoke.

"From this moment on, you don't leave this house without telling me."

Her eyes widened.

"Excuse me?"

"Until I know who is behind tonight's attack, you're staying here."

"I'm not your prisoner."

"No."

He looked at her calmly.

"You're my responsibility."

Something about those words made her uncomfortable.

"I don't need your protection."

"You do."

She opened the door and stepped out into the rain.

Damian followed her inside, where several men immediately lowered their heads as he passed.

"Boss."

Elena noticed the way everyone moved around him. No one questioned him. No one dared to meet his eyes for too long.

Damian led her toward a staircase.

"You'll stay in the east wing."

She stopped.

"And you?"

He turned to face her.

"The west wing."

"Good."

A faint smile appeared on his face.

"You sound relieved."

"I am."

Damian leaned slightly closer, his voice dropping.

"You shouldn't be."

Elena frowned.

Before she could ask what he meant, he walked away.

She watched him disappear down the corridor, unable to shake the strange feeling that she had just stepped into a world where nothing was what it seemed.

And somewhere inside that enormous house, Damian Moretti was already making a decision that would change both their lives.

He couldn't send Elena back.

Not anymore.

Because the people hunting her had discovered something Damian had hoped would remain buried forever.

Elena Carter was no longer just a witness.

She was the key to everything.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke. The question was simple. But the look on Damian's face told her that the answer was anything but.“What happened the night my mother died?”Damian slowly looked at her.“I told you, I don't know if she died.”The words made Elena's heart stop.“You just said—”“I said someone wants you to believe she died.”“Then why did you look terrified when you read the message?”He didn't answer.Elena stepped closer.“Damian, I need the truth.”“You need to understand that whoever sent this wants to turn you against me.”“Maybe they don't have to.”His expression tightened.“Don't say that.”“Why? Because it's true?”“I have never betrayed you.”“You kept my mother a secret from me.”“Because I was trying to keep you alive.”“You knew her. You knew my father. Damian's men were moving through the lower floors, checking every room while the security system flashed red across several monitors.Damian took Elena's hand.“Stay with me.”This time, she didn't argue. They reached the staircase when a loud noise came from the library.Damian immediately pulled her behind him.Two of his men entered the room with their weapons drawn.A few seconds later, one of them called out.“Nothing here.”Damian's eyes narrowed.“Check again.”Elena noticed something on the floor.A photograph. She picked it up.It was another pictur

Chapter 13: The Secret Damian KeptElena stared at the photograph as though the world around her had disappeared. Her mother was smiling. She was standing beside Damian, who looked no older than fifteen or sixteen, his expression serious even at that age.But that wasn't what frightened Elena. It was the date written on the back. The photograph had been taken only months before her mother disappeared.“You knew her.”Damian didn't deny it.“Yes.”Elena slowly lowered the photograph.“How?”“She used to visit my father.”“Why?”“I never knew the reason.”“You were there.”“I was a teenager.”“You must remember something.”Damian looked away.“I remember enough.”Elena stepped closer.“Then tell me.”He remained silent. She felt frustration rising inside her.“You keep telling me that you're protecting me, but every secret you keep makes me trust you less.”Damian's eyes returned to hers.“I know.”“Then why are you still hiding things?”“Because some truths don't disappear when you exp

For years, she had believed she knew the little she was allowed to know about her mother. She had been told that her mother disappeared when Elena was very young, leaving behind nothing but a few photographs and memories that became less clear with every passing year. Now Damian was telling her that the necklace had belonged to her.And somehow, his family had been involved.“You said my mother gave this to your father,” Elena whispered. “When?”“Twenty-five years ago.”“Why?”“I don't know.”She looked at him in disbelief.“You expect me to believe that?”“I expect you to understand that I wasn't there.”“But your father was.”Damian's expression tightened.“Yes.”Elena looked back at the wall, searching through the photographs with desperate eyes. His men had already searched the old property, but whoever had attacked them was gone. The envelope was still in Damian’s hand.He had said almost nothing since they left.Elena finally turned toward him.“You’re angry.”“I’m always angry.”“This is different.”Damian looked at her, his eyes meeting hers for only a moment before returning to the road ahead.“You were almost killed tonight.”“And I’m still alive.”“That isn’t the point.”“Then what is?”His jaw tightened.“The point is that I told you to stay beside me, and you nearly walked into a trap.”Elena frowned. “I stayed beside you.”“You walked toward that photograph without telling me.”“Because I saw my father.”“You could have been shot.”“So could you.”Damian turned his head slightly.“That doesn’t matter.”E
