"Sometimes the people protecting you are the same ones who buried the truth that broke you."

Arielle’s POV – The Unopened Box

My mother’s old storage box sat on the dining table like a ticking bomb.

Aunt May had handed it to me an hour ago and left the room.

Said it was time.

My hands trembled as I opened the lid.

Inside were newspaper clippings, hospital bills, a broken pendant… and a journal.

My mother’s.

The first line read:

> “If you’re reading this, I’m probably gone. But the truth had to come out, one way or another.”

I flipped the page.

And with every line, my childhood shattered.

>Flashback Journal Entry

“His name was Maxwell Knight. We met when I was twenty. I didn’t know he was married. I didn’t know he’d ruin my life.”

“I kept the pregnancy secret. But when he found out… everything changed. He said no child of his would be raised without control.”

“The accident that killed your ‘father’? It wasn’t an accident.”

My breath hitched.

I read it again.

And again.

Until I dropped

The words had barely left Xavier’s mouth when the first sound hit wood splintering, sharp and violent, from the rear of the cabin. Not a polite knock this time.A full-force assault. My pulse roared in my ears. The instinct to run fought against the fact that there was nowhere to go. The cabin was small, surrounded by dark woods, and the storm earlier had turned the ground into mud slowing, trapping.Xavier shoved the shotgun into my hands. “Hold it steady. If someone gets through that door, you shoot first. Don’t wait.”“Wait, what about” My free hand instinctively went to my stomach.“I know,” he said sharply, but his voice softened in the next breath. “That’s why you stay behind me. Always behind me.”Another crash rattled the back wall. The monitor was now a useless strobe of red beeps.“Front window,” Xavier hissed. “Go.”I moved, every muscle trembling. The shotgun felt too big, too heavy, but Xavier’s instructions echoed in my head—Don’t wait.Glass shattered behind us. I flinc

The Polaroid was still warm.I knew because when Xavier held it out, my fingers brushed the glossy edge and felt the faint residual heat from the camera’s internal flash. That meant whoever took it… had been here moments ago.My eyes darted to the cabin windows, the shadows in the tree line. My skin prickled with the suffocating certainty that if I looked long enough, I’d see them still standing there, smiling in the dark. The storm’s drizzle had tapered off, leaving the night unnervingly still. Even the pine branches, heavy with moisture, seemed to hold their breath.“They’re close,” I whispered, my voice barely audible.Xavier’s gaze was locked on the photo, his jaw set like stone. His thumb traced the edges before he slipped it into the inside pocket of his jacket, along with the note and my house key. When he finally looked at me, his expression was unreadable. “Inside. Now.”I wanted to argue. I wanted to demand answers—how they’d gotten my key, how they’d managed to sneak up wit

My phone nearly slipped from my fingers. This couldn’t be happening. No one was supposed to see that moment. That night wasn’t even what it looked like, but in a still image, stripped of context, it was damning.Xavier leaned over, catching sight of the photo. His entire body went rigid. “Where did you get this?”“It was sent to me,” I whispered, my throat dry. “From an unknown number.”He didn’t take the phone right away. Instead, he scanned my face, his eyes narrowing like he was trying to read the panic running through my veins. “When?”“Just now.”His hand shot out, taking the phone from me with more force than necessary. He studied the picture, then the caption, his jaw locking tighter with every second.“This is a setup,” he said finally. “Someone’s trying to use this against us. And I have a pretty damn good idea who.”“Amelia,” I breathed. He nodded once. “She’s making her move.”The cafeteria was nearly empty now, but the few students left were pretending to tidy their trays

Arielle’s throat went dry, her voice barely making it past her lips.“What… what does that mean?”Xavier’s jaw flexed, eyes still fixed on the photo like it was a live grenade.“It means,” he said, his tone low and deliberate, “that the next time they get close to you… you won’t be the only target.”Her stomach dropped. “Are you saying”“They’re threatening both of us now,” he cut in, tossing the photo back into the crate. “And they want me to know they’re not scared.”The walls of the storage unit suddenly felt smaller, the air heavier. Arielle’s mind flickered through every shadow she’d seen in the past month, every unexplained creak, every moment she’d felt watched. Now she knew, she had been.Xavier scanned the space, his eyes darting to corners and beams as though expecting something, or someone to emerge. “They’ve been planning this for a long time.”Her skin prickled. “How long?”“Years,” he said without hesitation. “Some of these photos… I wasn’t even in your life yet. Which m

Xavier didn’t take his eyes off the street, even long after the SUV had vanished. His whole body was tense, like a coiled spring ready to snap.“They’re not just watching,” he said finally, voice hard. “They’re testing us.”Arielle swallowed. “Testing for what?”He turned to face her, his dark eyes unreadable. “To see how far we’ll go before we break.”Her stomach twisted. “And you think we’re supposed to just sit here and wait for them to make their next move?”“No,” he said, slipping the velvet box into his jacket. “We move first.”It was nearly midnight when they found themselves in Xavier’s garage, the low hum of a desk lamp casting shadows over a workbench cluttered with tools, spare parts, and old files.Xavier set the key down on a black microfiber cloth, studying it under the lamp’s glare.“It’s not just a key,” he muttered, running his fingers along the edges. “See this engraving? That’s not decorative. It’s a manufacturer’s code.”“You can tell that just by looking?” she ask

The rest of the day moved like a loaded gun, silent, but dangerous. Every glance Arielle caught in the hallways was a trigger just waiting to be pulled.By the final bell, she had one goal: get out before whoever was behind this made their next move. But fate wasn’t giving her that luxury. When she reached her locker, a small white envelope was sticking out from the vents. Her stomach tightened. She glanced around, the hallway was busy, but no one seemed to be paying her any attention. Still, her instincts told her otherwise. Someone was watching. She slipped the envelope out and opened it. Inside was a single photograph. Not a candid. Not an edited joke. This was far more dangerous. It was a grainy image taken at night, through a window—her bedroom window. She was sitting at her desk, completely unaware, scrolling her laptop. The angle was too perfect to be accidental. On the back, in black marker, was a single word:“Closer.”Her blood ran cold. Before she could even react, a famili
