Chapter 19 - Honey?

Charlotte's POV:

As she was about to drift off to sleep, Elijah suddenly coughed, startling her as she hadn't expected it.

She adjusted her blanket, but he coughed again, so she looked at Elijah. She saw that he was sitting up halfway, and as he coughed again, he glanced in her direction.

"Did I wake you up? Sorry."

"I was about to fall asleep; I was just surprised by your cough."

"Sorry, it looks like I might be coming down with a cold."

She noticed that Elijah's eyes suddenly dimmed, even though he seemed fine earlier. Illnesses just suddenly strike, so it's surprising how the body's condition can change.

"Maybe you caught it from me. You were so close to me the other night."

He leaned back against the headboard and closed his eyes. "I don't know."

She hugged her knees to her chest, thinking about how Elijah could have caught her illness. She furrowed her brow but couldn't figure it out, yet maybe it was her breath or her proximity during a conversation that got him sick.
