What if She Says Yes?

The blue sky bleeding into the blue water had captured my attention. I couldn’t look away. I wanted to chase the horizon, go where the sky and the water became one. I stood on the sandy beach watching the waves roll in and out, my surfboard tucked under my arm. It was so peaceful. The sun was setting lower in the sky, changing the blue hues to deep oranges and yellows. I could pretend my life was perfect. Forget about everything and just be.

“Gonna stand there all day?” Zach asked to my left.

“Can I?”

“I don’t get the appeal. You’ve seen this exact same scene a million times.”

I didn’t look away. “And I want to see it a million more times. Don’t you ever like to imagine what it would be like to set sail and never look back?”

He scoffed. “I’ve done it. It gets boring after a while.”

“I wouldn’t get bored.”

He chuckled. “I think your girlfriend would have something to say about that.”

I shrugged a shoulder. “She is very easygoing. I could see her enjoying an escape from the world
