Chapter 67: What Elaine Knew

Elaine had stopped going to Westbrook the day she noticed the car.

It wasn't obvious. Nothing about it should have caught her attention at all, parked two houses down from the leased property, empty most of the time, occupied just often enough to matter. She'd spent six years training herself to notice precisely this kind of nothing, and the habit hadn't softened with time, no matter how quiet her life had become.

She drove past it twice before she let herself believe what she already knew.

Daniel went to the florist the next morning, before the shop had properly opened, Odalys still unlocking the front door when he knocked."You again," she said, letting him in without needing to ask why."I need to reach her. Soon. It's urgent this time, not just checking in."Odalys studied him for a moment, something careful in her expression. "How urgent?""The wedding's in four days. I need to see her before then."She set down the keys she'd been holding. "I can call about the centerpieces again. Tell her there's a problem with the order, something that needs her approval in person. It's thin, but we've used thinner excuses already and it's held.""Will she come?""If I make it sound urgent enough, yes. Brides get strange about details this close to the day. Nobody will question it."---The call went out an hour later, Odalys's voice warm and apologetic on the line, explaining a supplier issue that required Lydia's immediate input. Daniel waited in the back room, the same crate,

  • Marrying My Ex-husband's Greatest Enemy    Chapter 71: The Decision

Julian called Margaret the moment he left Elaine's building, laying out everything from the meeting while he still remembered every detail clearly enough to get it right. She listened without interrupting, the way she always did when something mattered more than her own questions."Send me everything you can by morning," she said finally. "I want to go through it myself before anyone decides what we do with it."He had copies made that night and delivered to her office before midnight. She arrived the next morning with a face Julian had learned, over the past several weeks, to read like weather."I spent half the night with everything Elaine gave us," she said, setting her bag down and pulling out a legal pad already dense with notes. "I want to say upfront, this is strong. Stronger than anything we had before yesterday.""But," Seraphina said, hearing it coming."But it's not finished. There are gaps. The shell company trail from six years ago connects to the recent ones, but not cle

They met at Julian's apartment, the one place none of them thought Evan had ever learned the address of.Elaine arrived last, carrying a single worn leather case, the kind that had clearly traveled with her through every hidden room and rented space she'd occupied over the past six years. She set it on the table carefully, like something that deserved more respect than furniture usually got."This is everything," she said. "Six years of it."Seraphina sat beside Julian, close enough that their shoulders nearly touched, neither of them commenting on it. Daniel took the chair across from Elaine, his notebook already open, pen ready, the habit of documenting everything too deep in him now to set aside even here, among people he trusted."Start wherever makes sense to you," Julian said. "We'll follow."---Elaine opened the case and began pulling out folders, each one labeled in careful, cramped handwriting, years of patient work laid out across the table in neat, deliberate rows."The fr

Julian didn't tell Seraphina that night, or the night after. He and Daniel talked it over for a long time once Elaine had gone, sitting in the car outside the garden until the light had fully faded, trying to decide what, if anything, belonged to them to say."It has to come from her," Daniel said finally. "Not us. We'd just be repeating something that isn't ours to tell.""She asked us not to protect her from things anymore," Julian said. "If we sit on this—""We're not sitting on it. We're letting her mother do what she should have done weeks ago." Daniel looked at him steadily. "There's a difference between protecting Sera and respecting that this isn't our story to hand her."Julian exhaled slowly, the tension easing out of him in pieces."You're right.""I usually am. It's exhausting, honestly."Despite everything, Julian almost laughed.---Elaine called her daughter two days later, her voice steadier on the phone than she felt."Can you come tomorrow?" she asked. "There are thi

It took her two more days to decide, and once she had, Elaine moved the way she always did. Quietly, and without wasting a single step. She didn't call Julian directly. She didn't trust phones she hadn't chosen herself, and she wasn't ready to hand a stranger, however well-intentioned, a direct line to wherever she was staying. Instead, she went back to the same careful contact who'd warned her about his questions in the first place."I need you to pass along a message," Elaine said. "To Julian Cross. Nothing in writing. Just tell him there's someone who can answer the questions he's been asking, and that she'll meet him somewhere of her choosing, on her own terms.""You're sure about this?""No," Elaine admitted. "But I'm tired of being sure about staying hidden instead."---Julian got the message two days later, relayed through a conversation so indirect it took him a moment to understand what he was actually being told."A woman wants to meet," his contact said. "Won't give a name

A rented room above a bakery forty minutes from her house, paid in cash, under a name that had never once touched anything co
