Chapter 2

Author: Anonymous
Very quickly, I pulled up in front of the hospital. Megan twisted her fingers so tightly that her fingertips turned pale.

My heart suddenly softened, and I reached out to hold her hand. "Don't worry. My family's really easygoing."

Hearing that, she looked up at me and shot me a faint smile. Her eyes lit up like a sky full of stars.

The smell of disinfectant hung in the hospital, and my heart grew heavier. When I saw Grandma lying on the hospital bed, all my emotions came flooding out. My eyes reddened, and I almost couldn't hold back my tears.

Megan didn't say a single word and squeezed my hand back instead. I pushed open the door.

Mom and Dad were sitting at Grandma's bedside. Seeing Megan behind me, they were slightly surprised but said nothing.

They leaned down toward Grandma and said softly, "Mom, Harry's brought his wife."

Grandma opened her eyes, trembling slightly. Squinting, she looked a little surprised to see Megan.

I held back my tears as I led Megan to Grandma's bedside and set the marriage certificate beside her hand. "Grandma."

Megan greeted her too.

Grandma smiled, her eyes crinkling, and reached beneath her pillow. She pulled out a gold bracelet and handed it to Megan.

"I had a pair of these when I got married. I gave one to Harry's mother, and now I'm giving this one to you."

Grandma's eyes had turned cloudy, and she could barely see us anymore. Still, she wore a gentle smile.

I could no longer hold myself back and lowered my head, weeping quietly.

Grandma gently took my hand and Megan's and placed them together. "Since you two are married, you must treat her well. Don't let her down… just because you acted on impulse."

I knew what Grandma meant. Seeing that the person behind me wasn't Brenda, she already had an idea of what had happened. She was worried that I had married some random woman just to fulfill her wish of seeing me married.

Megan gently held Grandma's hand and said warmly, "Penelope, I'll explain everything to you later. Just know that I chose to marry Harry. I'll treat him well, too."

I looked at Megan gratefully.

My phone buzzed with a transaction notification. A payment had been made at a five-star hotel.

I tapped out a quick message to my assistant, telling him to freeze Brenda's supplementary bank card. I turned my attention back to Grandma and was a little taken aback to see Megan chatting happily with her.

Megan was Brenda's best friend. Every time I saw her, she kept her head down, looking subdued.

Back then, Brenda had my whole heart, and Megan was nothing more than an acquaintance. To me, she was just a shadow drifting behind Brenda.

I had never seen Megan so talkative before. She wore a gentle smile and even managed to make Grandma laugh.

If Brenda had been here, she would have been sitting off to the side, scrolling on her phone, her expression sour.

Grandma once told me Brenda was too carefree and not the right woman to marry. Back then, I got upset with her and thought she was looking down on Brenda's background and the fact that she was an orphan.

Grandma even tried to explain that Brenda didn't actually care about me, and I ended up arguing with her over it.

I only accepted the truth after learning the hard way—Brenda truly did not care about me.

After dinner, Grandma quickly fell into a deep slumber again.

Megan and I went up to the rooftop and stared at the stars scattered across the sky. Noticing how upset I was, she comforted me.

"Penelope just wants you to be happy. Don't be too upset."

I forced a smile. Looking at her thin frame, I took off my coat and draped it over her shoulders. "Thanks for today. Since we're already married, I'll take responsibility for you and end things with Brenda.

"I'll make it clear to her as well, so she doesn't blame you for any of this. After all, she only has eyes for Ethan.

"But if you ever meet someone you like, we'll get divorced once things settle down. I'll make it up to you."

Megan froze for a moment before she smiled and said, "It's fine. This arrangement works for me too. Even if I hadn't married you, my mom would've found another way to marry me off.

"You're a good man. I'm glad I married you."

After a moment of silence, I pulled out a bank card and handed it to Megan. Instead of turning it down, she carefully tucked it into her bag.

"Do you think I'm just a snob who's after your money?" she suddenly asked.

I shook my head.

After dropping Megan off at home, I went for a walk and suddenly found myself downstairs at Brenda's apartment.

Her lights were still on, and the curtains were drawn. I could see her and Ethan locked in a passionate kiss by the window.

A sharp pang struck my chest.

Brenda and I had been together for eight years, and it ended so abruptly. Even though I could see the truth as clear as day and had tried so hard to accept it, it still hurt like hell.

When I got home from work, I noticed Megan's red eyes, and I frowned. "What happened?"Megan smiled. "Nothing. I just watched a sad drama. I'll be okay in a bit."She fidgeted with the hem of her shirt, instinctively avoiding eye contact.During dinner, I watched her busy herself in the kitchen and asked, "Did Brenda ask to meet up?"Megan froze for a moment, chewing on her bottom lip. "I—"I cut her off. "Brenda has always been bold, so she's definitely going after you. She's trying to use you to get to me."Even if we don't get divorced, it'll drive a wedge between us. Could you tell me what happened?"Megan stayed quiet for a long time before finally telling me everything that had happened.I pulled her into my arms. "What makes you think you could ever embarrass me? I don't need you to handle any social obligations."You can do whatever you like. You'll always have my support. As for those high-society rules… "As long as we make the rules, no one would ever dare criticiz

Brenda's eyes lit up at the sight of me. She pointed at the front desk and pouted at me. "They won't let me go upstairs. I want you to fire them!" I said calmly, "I'm the one who told them to stop you."Brenda's expression instantly darkened at my words, but I ignored her and started to take Megan upstairs. However, Brenda got in my way. "I'm coming up too."I was both irritated and amused at how sure of herself she was. Noticing how eager the front desk was for gossip, I decided to take her upstairs. Brenda pointed at Megan, asking, "Why is she still here? Oh, whatever. I've already had the divorce papers drawn up. "I want you guys to sign them. Don't forget to collect your divorce certificate later."I looked at Brenda and took the papers from her hands. She smiled triumphantly as I tore them to shreds. "Brenda, I'll never divorce Megan. I find you disgusting, and I'll never marry you for a business deal. Since you're so confident, I suggest you have someone look into it

The next time I saw Brenda, three months had already passed. During this time, I had no idea who was targeting Henderson Corporation. Some people had offered highly lucrative deals to our business partners, poaching many of our projects. Even the company's shares had taken a sharp hit. Just as I was wondering who the culprit was, Brenda showed up in front of me. She had lost a lot of weight but was wearing designer clothes. She even wore an expensive watch on her wrist. Brenda walked over to me triumphantly. "Harry, you're not the only one with a powerful family anymore. Let me introduce myself. I'm Brenda, the heiress of the Townsend family. "You regret it now, don't you? I bet you regret treating me so badly back then and marrying Megan. She's just a country bumpkin. What can she even do for you? You're lucky she's not dragging you down."Instead of responding, I looked at Megan, who was standing in the doorway. She had arrived at the worst possible time and overheard everyt

Brenda had a large group of reporters gathered at the office entrance. The wound on her head was still visible from last week, when I lost control and brought the vase down onto her head. Standing in front of the cameras, she sobbed, with tears streaking down her face. "Today, I'm here to expose the ugly side of Henderson Corporation."Eight years ago, its CEO, Harry Henderson, used his power to force me to be with him. I still don't understand why he did it. "If I hadn't saved him back then, he would've died. Why did he have to tear me away from my lover? Why repay my kindness this way? "At first, I decided to let it go and live like this for the rest of my life. After all, I couldn't win against him. However, he even got involved with my best friend and twisted the story against me. "Now he's trying to throw me out of Apolka! All I want is justice for myself."Standing in the crowd, Brenda looked utterly pitiful. When she noticed me, she couldn't help but tremble. As the

It was drizzling at Grandma's funeral.A framed photo of Grandma had already been taken to the cemetery. I held onto her ashes. Once the other mourners arrived, we would set off to her grave at the appointed time. I numbly watched the mourners arrive. My heart ached so much that I could barely breathe. Grandma almost got to try the soup Megan made for her. A stir broke out at the entrance, and I turned around in a daze.Brenda had burst into the room, wearing high heels and a red dress. She walked over to me, smiling brightly. "Harry, I'll marry you! Let's get married now."But you have to promise me this—you'll give Ethan the company project and some shares."I stared at her quietly. I wanted to question her, but I felt as if all my strength had drained away. I simply pushed her aside and held Grandma's ashes in my arms.Brenda frowned, finally realizing something was amiss, and asked in confusion, "Who died?"She looked at the urn in my arms with disdain. "That's disgusting

I glanced at Brenda. I was about to say something when her phone pinged with a notification. She glanced at it, and her rage faded instantly.I didn't even have to think about it. It had to be a text from Ethan. After putting her phone away, Brenda pulled out a file from her bag and tossed it at me. I flipped it open and saw a partnership agreement full of one-sided clauses.Brenda folded her arms and curled her lip. "Ethan wants to do business. You froze my bank card, costing him a client. "You have to make it up to him. You should hand over your new energy project to him."Seeing my expression darken, Brenda quickly added, "Ethan and I may not be related, but we're like family. He's like a brother to me. You don't want my family to disapprove of our relationship, do you?"I tossed the file back at her. "He's like a brother to you, huh? When did brothers and sisters start kissing and making out? "Brenda, I haven't even made you pay for what you said to my grandma at the hospi
