My best friend, Loretta, found me sitting at the kitchen table of the small apartment I had been renting on the outskirts of Blackridge. Blackridge was a beautiful city, all tall glass buildings, rain, and endless green forests with so many different packs. The Lancaster estate was less than thirty minutes away. Thirty minutes, however, I hadn’t stepped inside my own pack. It was now renamed the StormCrest pack, like the rest of Lucian's packs that he had conquered. Rain tapped against the window beside me as I stared at the deed Lucian Black had placed in my hands. My family’s name was printed across the top. Lancaster. I hadn't seen this document in a long time, not since Lucian’s warriors had dragged me out of our home and replaced the Lancaster crest above the gates with his. I still remembered standing outside those gates with nowhere to go. My family was dead, and my only brother was missing. I had nothing but the clothes I was wearing and now, six years later, he was offering it back. Loretta gaze fell on the paper. “What is that in your hands?” I folded it before she could reach for it. “Something Lucian gave me.” I didn't have to say who for her to know. Her ocean blue eyes hardened, and she growled, irritation bubbling within her. “What does he want this time?” She clenched her fists, Loretta was the Emperor Alpha's number one hater, second to me. I handed her the deed, and her face fell, defeated. She knew the shit that man put me through, because of him, I went through things no woman should. “Me.” My voice sounded quiet. It wasn’t a secret that Lucian had wanted me for years. He had made that very clear the first time he saw me, but I had refused him every time. Loretta was still as I let her take in the information. When she did, she pulled out the chair opposite me and collapsed in it. “Elena…” “He wants me to marry him.” She zoned out again, quiet, just staring at me, yet not. She shook her head slowly. “No, babe. You can't." “You haven’t even heard the rest.” I smiled, bitterly. “I don’t need to.” “He’ll return the Lancaster estate to me.” Her expression changed to curiosity. Loretta knew how long I’d wanted that house back. Not because I cared about the wealth or because I wanted the Lancaster name restored. There was something inside that house that I needed to find. Something my father had hidden before he died. It might finally tell me where my brother was. “I have to get back inside,” I whispered. Trisha reached across the table and took my hand. “And you think marrying Lucian is the only way?” I looked toward the rain-streaked window. “I’ve spent six years looking for another way,” I whispered. I found none. The front door opened, and James walked in. His eyes found mine, and I saw despair in them. James had been my father’s beta’s son, and my boyfriend. We’d grown up together, fought together, and somehow survived the fall of the Lancaster family together. “He’s offering you the estate.” he said, voice gruff and angry, jaw clenched. I nodded. “And you said yes?” he was offended. “Not yet.” James stared at me for a long moment, and he walked over and sat beside me. “Elena, don’t.” his voice was quiet. Almost pleading. He had loved me since we were pups, and now I was about to hurt him. “I don’t have a choice,” I whispered, tears welling in my eyes. “Come with me, Elena.” I glanced up at him. “Where, James?!" I almost cried. “Anywhere.” His fingers tightened around mine. “Oregon, California. Hell, we could cross the border and disappear. You don’t have to marry him.” “No. I have a brother who may still be alive.” I shook my head, and James went still, I could see he was communicating with his inner wolf, and they were disagreeing. “And the answer is in that house...I have to find it.” He looked down at our joined hands. “What if Lucian knows what you’re looking for?” I mulled it over. He would probably kill me, I guess. Up to now, I don't know why he spared me, maybe because he didn't think I was a threat to him, because I didn't have a wolf. I thought back to the look Lucian gave me at the party. He had looked like a man waiting for something he’d already won. I pulled my hand away from James. “I’ll marry Lucian Black.” I declared, and James’ face crumbled, tears gathered in his eyes. I hated myself for putting them there. I wrapped my arms around him, and he held me tightly, breathing in my scent like it was the last time he'd have a chance to. For a few seconds, I let myself pretend this was another life. A life where I could be with James, and have his babies, not marry the man who had taken everything from me.Elena’s POV I woke before Lucian did. For a few minutes, I stared at the ceiling, thinking back to what happened last night. I gave myself away to him, willingly, and enjoyed it. I fucking enjoyed it. I moved with him and gripped him, trailing my fingers all over his skin, marking and biting him. I was a traitor, a traitor to my family and myself. I turned my head and looked at him. Lucian was sleeping peacefully beside me, his breathing slow and even. Even unconscious, there was something intimidating about him. He was beautifully masculine, which made it difficult to look away. A faint stubble darkened his sharply defined jaw, making him look rougher somehow. He looked like ... like a god. A very handsome dangerous god. The sight of him made my insides burn but the thoughts lasted only a few seconds when I remebered all he did How could he sleep so peacefully after ruining my life?I slipped out of bed, and grabbed the dagger I kept in my bag, and returned to his side. Slow
Elena’s POVLucian stopped directly in front of me. He had a dark, hooded look in his eyes and I started to panic. “W-what are you doing in my room?” I asked, my voice trembling despite my attempt to keep it steady. He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, that infuriating gaze traveled over me, slow and shameless.“You’re my wife now, dear.” His voice was calm, almost casual. “I’m here to consummate this marriage.”My stomach coiled. I had known this was coming. I had walked into this marriage knowing exactly what Lucian would expect of me. My fingers curled at my sides as I forced myself to hold his gaze.I wasn’t going to let him see me afraid. This was part of the plan. I needed to get close to Lucian Black. He had to trust me in order to have access to everything. If that meant playing the obedient wife for a little while, so be it.I swallowed thickly, and I nodded. All for my brother. Lucian took another step toward me and my breath caught. His hand lifted slowly, giving me plen
Elena’s POV“He’s a prisoner?" My blood ran cold as I stared at Lucian, waiting for him to explain. But he didn’t. Instead, that infuriating little smile appeared on his face.“What happened to him?”Lucian glanced over my shoulder. “The introductions can't wait.”"What?” I blinked. He walked past me as though the conversation was over. Apparently, it was. And I wasn’t going to convince him otherwise. Still, I felt some relief now that I knew who had Julian.“Come, dear.”I turned around. “Lucian.”He didn’t stop walking. “Lucian!” I screamed and he finally looked back at me. I narrowed my eyes, if my eyes could shoot blasts, he'd be dead. “Come along.” He insisted. Son of a gun.I followed him to the inner grounds where the alphas were still waiting. Nobody had moved very far from where Lucian had left them, and the ground was covered in blood. Now I was expected to stand beside the man who had killed an alpha as if nothing had happened.Lucian's arm wrapped around my waist, pull
Elena’s POVI didn’t sleep. Every time I closed my eyes, I felt his mouth against mine. It was ridiculous, worse than ridiculous. I had walked into the Lancaster house knowing exactly who he was.A conqueror, and a dangerous murderer. The man who had destroyed my family. Yet somehow, the thing keeping me awake wasn’t the thought of what he had done. I was fucking fucked sideways. The memory of how he had kissed me kept replaying in my head. I should have slapped him across his face and run to exfoliate my mouth with soap! There was a knock on the door, and I turned my head towards it.“Mrs. Black?” I stared at the woman standing outside. It took me a second to realize she was talking to me. That name, regarding me, sounded so wrong to my very being. “Elena, please.” She smiled sheepishly, a flush on her cheeks. She was cute. "Oh, I can't call you that." She said, her voice raspy, not looking at me. I stretched my limbs and sat up, looking at the servant with rosy cheeks and short
Elena’s POVRain followed us all the way to the Lancaster estate. The house was perched on a hill at the edge of the land, where one could see the whole territory. My car slowed as the old iron gates came into view, and my hands tightened around the steering wheel.I hadn’t been here in six years, but I recognized everything as if I hadn't left. The long driveway disappeared beneath the trees.Even the old tree at the entrance where we had picnics. Nothing had changed. My uncle Lenin taught me how to ride a bicycle in this very driveway. That day, I fell, and my tooth came out, at least I received a 50-dollar bill because Lenin was overcome with guilt. Tears were starting to build in my eyes, but I blinked them away. Loretta glanced at me from the passenger seat.“You can still turn around.” She murmured, she was nervous. I had begged her not to come, but she insisted.“I don't deserve you, Etta,” I bristled.“I feel like I've failed. You're marrying the man who destroyed your fa
