Damien’s POV~

She didn’t pause for my response, didn’t look at me as she started to collect herself. I had walked towards her to say something, to tell her that she couldn’t do this all by herself, but she just walked right past me as though I wasn’t there.

The cold shoulder that she'd given me hurt like having a bruise. Even with that, though, I still followed.

Caspian moved beside her, steady and clear, talking about what they had to do to get ready. “You will have to have the pup tied up against you so you have your arms free,” he told her. “And ration your water. The air is thinner at higher altitudes, and we’ll go more slowly.”

She nodded, paying accurate attention to him, and not me.

I kept my mouth shut and took a step back, glaring at her as she made ties to strap the pup to her chest with rags she’d ripped from her cape. Her jaw set with concentration. Caspian strapped it on for her, securing it so that it wouldn’t slip. My wolf snarled deep within me, but I pushed it back,

Elara’s POV~I sat beside my father, with his hand in mine. His flesh was cold and fragile like a pale parchment. The healers had used the herb on him, and now it was just a matter of waiting. Waiting, and praying.I ran my thumb over his knuckles and muttered words I doubted he could hear. “I’m here, Father. I won’t leave you again. Please… come back to me.”I was desperate to see his chest rise and fall so faintly that I had to lean over every few seconds, just to reassure myself that he was still breathing. Everything around me seemed to be silent until the doors flew open and Damien and Caspian stepped inside with serious faces. “Elara,” Damien said, his tone short and pained. “You need to come with us. Now.”Caspian’s voice was in control, though it had a sense of urgency in it. “It’s important. You must see this yourself.”Seeing them standing there together, and not fighting each other but united, I just went rigid. Reluctantly, I got out of the chair, caressed my father’s han

Damien’s POV~Lyra gripped my arm in a way that made it look as though she had no intention of ever letting me go. She had delicate, soft hands, and her voice was sweet as she leaned into me.“Damien, you really don’t have to do this to yourself. You’ve been through so much,” she muttered, tilting her face up to mine with open, worried eyes. “Let me take care of you. Please, don’t shut me out. I’ve been so worried.”I barely heard her. My skin was trying to crawl out from under her hand. I yanked my arm away, the muscles in my jaw tightening at her fake concern for me. Her voice was sweet, but what I tasted was poison. And without another word, I pushed her out of my way and left the house in an angry rush, leaving her standing there like a deer in headlights with that perfect mask beginning to slip for only a second. The cold night air hit me hard, and I welcomed it. It ripped into my chest and washed the sticky-sweet of her from my lungs. I punched the solid stone wall next to the

Elara’s POV~When we reached the pack, my legs were weak and each step that I took felt heavier than the one before. And even when the sight of home met my gaze, it didn't ease me; it just made me aware all over again why I had left in the first place. The house seemed too quiet, and too watchful, as if it had been holding its breath all along while I was gone. The second I got inside, I smelled it. The heaviness of illness. The air was filled with the scent of herbs that had been used in the hopes of holding off death, and they were all unsuccessful. My heart clenched. Nothing had changed. If anything, it was worse.“Mother?” My voice broke, softer than I had meant for it to be.Winifred ran out of the corridor with her hair down. She was dressed in loose clothing from her sleepless nights. She burst into tears and, at the same time, with a smile of relief, when she saw me. She held me to her chest so hard that I could hardly breathe.“Elara,” she whispered, her voice shaking. “You

Caspian’s POV~The clearing was too still after the battle. I wiped the blade on my shredded sleeve and looked at Elara. She clutched the pup so hard that he was mashed against her chest, and her eyes gazed without blinking or wavering as though she feared to be betrayed by even the silence. Damien was behind her, panting heavily, with blood streaming from deep cuts across his body. None of us spoke at first. It was I who at last spoke to break the silence.“We have to burn the bodies,” I said, my voice low but unwavering. “If we abandon them, corruption will grow. The trees will never be replaced, and there might be others coming to sniff at what is left.”Elara looked at me, reluctant. She wrapped her arms tighter around the pup, as if it could save her from the picture of fire eating through flesh. I saw the protest in her eyes, but then she nodded. “If it must be done.”Damien muttered something I couldn’t hear, pulling one of the bodies closer to lie near the center path. I follo

Elara's POV~The air reeked of blood and fear. My arms shook as I gripped the pup close to my chest, but I wasn’t about to lose it. Its little body trembled with every growl that erupted from all around us. I whispered to it with trembling and faltering words.“You are safe… I’ll protect you. I won’t let them take you as well.”Tears wouldn’t let me see clearly, but I fought them back because if they flowed, then I’d crumble completely. Why now? And why now that I had at last gotten the littlest of hope down from this God forsaken mountain? What kind of Goddess shows me a way to save my father and then throws this storm at us?I leaned against the rock wall in the hope that it would support me. My chest was pained at the memories of Jasmine’s dead body piercing through me. I saw her face in flashes, her eyes fading, and I knew that infant was gone before it ever really cried. I said that seven years ago, but I can still hear the silence that followed it, the one that broke me. I crus

Damiens POV~The woods were strangely quiet, too quiet. Their eyes shone with light among the trees as they got closer, and I immediately realized that they'd been watching us long before they came out to meet us.I placed myself in front of Elara, panting, as my claws began to come out, as my wolf demanded to be free. Caspian moved beside me, with his knife out. Elara stared at the pup, hugging it to her chest, with her eyes wide open.“Stay back. Keep the pup safe,” I said to her, my voice low and sharp. She breathed hard and her lips trembled, but she nodded with unblinking eyes. “Damien… please—please be careful.”The sound of her fear alone pierced me. It reminded me of the several times when she had begged me before, and I had let her down. Not this time, though, I promised myself that I would not fail. The first rogue lunged. It burst out of the trees, running fast, with its mouth open. I moved forward, to lunge and leap in one violent thrust. My bones snapped, my claws rippe
