LORRAINE

I can't remember the last time I had proper food. Jayden raised an eyebrow at me as he observed me.

“Why do you look like you've seen a ghost?” He said and I was very conscious of the lump that was beginning to form at the base of my throat. So many emotions were pummelling through me that I didn't know which one to pinpoint. I was caught between crying and telling them how grateful I was. No words could come out. I stood silent, looking at the both of them.

“We should sit down. Surely, you don't expect us to have lunch in the middle of the cafeteria” Jordan said dryly as he walked past me to a random table. Jayden followed me and after some minutes they turned to look at me expectantly. I stared agape at them for a moment. It took me a long minute to register that they wanted me to sit with them.

I hesitantly lifted one leg in front of the other. The balance of my legs and knees felt wobbly and unsteady as I approached their table. Uncertainty clung to the walls of my st

Marabella POVI wasn’t going to let them hurt us.I stepped away from the Alphas and stood shorter, smaller, and cursed. When the witches’ magic fell from their eyes and mouths that finally opened, the pack tensed. My Alphas roared, starting to shift, but I didn’t move.I narrowed my eyes on them, on their magic. My magic swirled with my shadows and poured out of me.My magic slammed up against theirs, mine purple with shadows only I could see mixed in against their gold.It was beautiful and terrifying. The connection of magic was like a blast; it echoed through the realm, a wave of energy rebounding over all of us.It blew me back, but my Alphas were right there behind me, holding me up as I fought against the witches’ magic that tried to take me out. They were fucking strong, stronger than I had expected, but I fought every ounce of magic they had with every piece of my own. My shadows and magic together were strong too, and they were having a blast. My magic was eating away at the

Marabella POV“No,” I argued, walking past my wolves. The witches glared, but I didn’t care. They couldn’t say no. We were asking for permission to help us save the realm.Their precious balance should mean more to them; it meant more to me.The sky cracked with lightning, and the ground shook as the witches’ anger became palpable.Well, I was angry too.“We have made our decision. The beast and Adrenna will be put to death,” the echo spoke for the witches, and my hands clenched at my sides. That decision was bullshit.“And how does that play a part in the balance? That’s your job. To keep the balance?”“How does turning them human play a part?” they countered.“Because the magic in Adrenna can help us defeat the vampires. Without that, we don’t have the numbers. So many of us will die in this war, and for what? To teach two people who fell in love against your wishes a lesson?” I challenged them.It wasn’t a smart move, but it was all I could do. I had to change their minds. If I cou

Marabella POVI smiled up at him, then turned to Beenie. “And you are here eavesdropping in the halls because?”She shrugged. “The witches are full of shit. They made me feel so sick that I vomited all over my dress. I went to get changed, and now I am heading back to repeat the process until they leave.”I thought she was joking, but she was not smiling.“That’s awful,” I said, screwing my face up.“You’re telling me. So, are we heading downstairs to pretend like we don’t know what the witches are going to say? Anyone with any sense of aura can see the hostility they have for you,” Beenie said, nodding downstairs. Her face was bored, as if she couldn’t be bothered with any of it.“So it’s my fault the pack isn’t getting the help they need?”“Don’t play victim; it’s gross, and you’re stronger than that. Even the witches know it. That’s why they don’t like you. Anything with power that could outshine them disappears pretty quickly around here. Which is why they can’t fucking stand me e

Marabella POVThey were perfection, and the love that bloomed in my chest when I was with them was more than I had ever thought my body and heart were capable of.But that love came with emotions I didn’t know what to do with: protectiveness, anger, resentment. It all swirled inside me, making me need to get things done and make sure they were protected at all costs. They were our heirs, our legacies; they had to survive this war. If we let them die, let anything hurt them, then we failed.I couldn’t handle that.Just like I couldn’t handle the idea that the witches might say no.The alphas didn’t seem to think they would, but I didn’t trust the witches.Something inside me didn’t like the way they were talking to me, the way they saw me as a hybrid. The winter-born thing back to bite me in the ass yet again. But they were scared, of the power I had, of the power I was going to get if they said yes. But it shouldn’t be about power. It should be about doing what’s right. And giving Adr

Marabella POVI watched in awe as a misty film of glitter rose from the shifting wolves and made its way to the witches. They dropped their cloaks, revealing almost naked bodies in flawless skin. The magic dust fell on them, soaking into their skin. It was beautiful, and I couldn’t stop watching. My magic turned in me, urging me to reach out and touch the pretty glitter. I watched it, mesmerized. Little flakes, like snow but gold. I wanted to see if it felt like snow. I went to reach out. Cain pinned my arm down.“What are you doing?” he snapped. I looked up at him.“I want to touch it. It’s beautiful, Cain,” I said back. I’d never understood the term“The world stopped” until that moment. Everyone froze.Cain looked at me in horror. “You can see it?”“You can’t?” I asked back. How could he not? It was beautiful, like just touching the magic would bring me peace. My own magic moved inside me again, trying to get my hand free. Cain’s hold bit into my skin.“You can’t touch it, Luna. Yo

Marabella POVThe balance wouldn’t allow me to take the border magic, nor birth my children if it wasn’t meant to be. We all understand that.”Anetta glared at me, shaking her head. But I wasn’t letting the condescension in their creepy voices win out. They had something to say, which wasn’t in my favor. That didn’t bode well for what we needed from them. “They bowed for you when you got the border magic, correct?”“They bowed because I proved my loyalty to them over my father by saving them.”“They bowed because they fear the magic running through your hybrid veins,” the voice argued. But the witches were wrong. I felt the wolves in my pack in the link. They respected me. They loved me. They would die for me. And they knew I would do the same for them.It had nothing to do with the power I had.“They fear it, or you do?” I asked back, my voice holding the challenge in those words. I meant it to be a challenge. That magic they spoke of was just as loyal as the pack, and it was pissed
