Jake POV
It took us quite a while to wrap things up at Jeremy’s place. We uncovered loads of hard drives filled with data, which we’ll hand over to Blake, our cyber team leader, to examine for more information on Riley. I also found some notes Jeremy had written about Riley’s previous actions. I made sure to keep those, too.
By the time we finally left, night had fallen. A whole day had passed on this task, which frustrated me because I had other plans for the day, but raiding Jeremy’s home took priority. Even so, we’d gained an advantage – we had fresh leads.
We’d discovered Riley was a female wolf, living somewhere along the southern coast. Interesting. Out of all possibilities, it turned out she was a she-wolf. Who would have guessed?
This new detail made things a bit trickier. Usually, we knew our enemies, most of whom were men. A few female wolves made our list too, but none had the courage to do what Riley had done. She was different. I could tell my brother felt the same curiosity about her. For years, she’d been a thorn in our side. Last year, she stole ten million from us, setting Lucas off.
That theft marked a turning point. It was one thing to be a nuisance, but swiping such a huge sum crossed a line. Ever since, I’ve been on the ground tracking Riley myself. Before, I had a separate team handling her, but after things escalated, I took control.
Now, we finally had a lead, and it stirred a strange excitement in me. Riley had been a puzzle for us, and now we had a clue. We could finally start moving in the right direction to stop her before she caused us further damage.
Whoever she was, there was no doubt she was highly skilled, strong enough to threaten us. We couldn’t allow that.
As I stepped out of Jeremy’s house, a cool breeze ruffled my hair, bringing a moment of calm. Standing on his driveway, I took a deep breath of fresh night air, which immediately awakened my wolf.
It had been a while since I’d gone for a proper run. Tonight, the atmosphere seemed to call to me, urging me to shift into my wolf form and roam the Danielss, feeling free. Free from what, though?
Lately, I’d been feeling strangely off. It’s hard to explain, but it bothered me, especially at night. I couldn’t sleep. Most nights, I’d end up in the training room, pushing my body until exhaustion set in, hoping it would ease this feeling. Yet, it lingered.
This feeling gnawed at me during the day, distracting me from my work. It was as if a part of me was slipping into darkness. I felt like I was losing a piece of myself, which scared me deeply.
Why was this happening? Was it some sort of illness affecting my wolf?
I stood there, lost in thought, letting the night wind soothe me. The journey back to our pack would be far, but I craved the release a run could bring. Maybe it would calm my mind so I could think clearly again.
I decided to go for it. I told one of my men and went around to Jeremy’s backyard, where the Danielss began. After carefully removing my clothes, I shifted into my wolf form, took my clothes in my mouth, and dashed into the forest.
I ran through the shadowy Danielss, the chilly night air streaming through my fur. It felt exhilarating, and for a while, I forgot all my troubles. But even this run couldn’t shake the unsettling feeling. It clung to me, refusing to fade.
Instead of letting it ruin my run, I tried to enjoy the night, savoring the freedom of the Danielss. I kept running without stopping. My wolf was bursting with energy since it hadn’t been out for a while, and even after miles, he didn’t seem the least bit tired.
Eventually, I reached the pack’s territory and stopped right at the doorstep of the house I shared with Lucas. I shifted back, holding my clothes in hand, not bothering about my nudity. Among our pack, we were used to it; there was no embarrassment.
Entering the house, I found Lucas in the living room, focused on his laptop. He looked up as I walked in.
“You went for a run?” he asked, a hint of irritation in his voice. Guess I was late.
“Yes, I ran here,” I replied, running a hand through my hair. That uneasy feeling was back, even stronger. The harder I tried to ignore it, the more intense it became.
Lucas seemed to pick up on my mood and asked, “Something wrong?”
“Nothing,” I brushed it off, heading upstairs for a quick shower. When I came back down, dinner was already served, and Lucas waited at the table under the chandelier. I frowned at the meal choices but decided to eat without complaining.
“You know I’m supposed to be the grumpy one,” Lucas joked. I gave him a look.
“I’m just tired,” I replied, piling my plate with ribs. Silence settled over us as we ate. I felt Lucas’s eyes on me, observing. He noticed things. Nothing got past him, sometimes more than I wanted.
“I…” I began, searching for the words to describe the unsettling feeling, knowing Lucas wouldn’t stop until I opened up. “I’ve been feeling restless lately. My wolf is acting strange, like he’s developed his own mind and doesn’t want to listen to me anymore.”
Lucas’s eyes widened.
“You’ve been feeling that too?”
“I stayed with her last night,” Jake began quietly, breaking the silence that had fallen thick over the room like dust. “Thought maybe I could help. Comfort her. But…”Lucas looked up from his seat on the couch, where he’d been silently nursing a mug of black coffee. His eyes were bloodshot. “But what?”Jake sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “She had another nightmare.”Lucas tensed. “Same as before?”Jake shook his head slowly. “Worse. She thrashed. Clawed at the sheets. Whispered things I couldn’t understand.”Lucas set his mug down, forgotten. “Did you wake her?”“I tried,” Jake said. “But she flinched away from me. Like I was the threat.”A heavy silence hung between them.“I didn’t push it,” Jake added. “Didn’t want to make it worse. But something’s different now. The nightmares… they’re changing her.”Lucas frowned. “You think they’re connected to what happened? The servers? The missing memories?”“I don’t just think,” Jake said firmly. “I know.”Lucas leaned forward, elbows
Fractured Memories: "Do you remember anything yet?"Jake's voice broke the thick silence of the shared office, his question hanging in the air like fog. He stood by the door, shirt damp from the run, chest rising and falling as the last remnants of exertion faded from his body. The room still smelled faintly of cedar and sweat, undercut by the crisp, sterile scent of electronics humming around them.Lucas didn't look up. His fingers hovered above the keyboard, the glow from the monitors casting shadows under his eyes. He had been staring at the same set of surveillance reports for over twenty minutes. Jake didn’t have to ask to know he hadn’t processed a word."No," Lucas finally muttered, his voice low and rough. "Nothing that makes sense."Jake crossed the room, dropping into the chair across from his brother. He rubbed a hand over his face and then through his hair, still damp with sweat. "Lila was asleep when I got back," he said quietly. "I didn’t want to wake her."Lucas nodde
LILATwo weeks later...I sat alone in the library, eyes fixed on the blank glow of the computer screen. Everything was wiped clean—completely erased. Over the past week, I had deleted and destroyed every single file from my systems. It was like I’d scrubbed my entire past clean. To be certain that none of it could ever come back to haunt me, I went a step further. I dismantled my entire setup and set fire to my hard drives and devices. Every trace of my old digital life went up in flames. I wanted it gone. Forever. But now that it was all behind me, I couldn’t help but wonder—what now? This world, this life, was all I had ever known. And now, I was walking away from it. Not because I was forced to... but because I chose to. It was time to let go.The soft creak of the library chair beneath me was the only sound. My fingers hovered over the keyboard, useless. There was nothing left to type, no mission to plan, no code to crack."You okay?" Jake’s voice echoed in my mind through the li
Lila’s breath was still ragged as the three of them lay tangled in the warm aftermath. The steady thrum of their heartbeats gradually slowed, but beneath the surface, an undeniable heat still pulsed relentlessly inside her. Lucas’s dark eyes flickered with sudden realization.“She’s still in heat,” Lucas murmured, voice low but sharp with concern.Jake shifted beside them, a slow, understanding nod acknowledging the truth. “It’s the two mates,” he said quietly, brushing a strand of damp hair from Lila’s flushed face. “The cycle... it lasts longer than usual when you have two. Could be a week, maybe more.”Lila groaned softly, a tired, frustrated sound that mingled with the lingering ache of pleasure and the primal call of her body’s insistent need. “A week?” she repeated, the weight of that realization settling heavy in her chest. The thought of enduring this endless, raw craving felt almost unbearable.Jake’s voice was firm but soothing. “We’ll take care of you. Every day, every mome
“Are you breathing okay?” Jake’s voice was low, rough with concern, yet gentle enough to stir a fragile warmth in her chest.Lila nodded weakly, her head resting on his shoulder, her body trembling with a mixture of exhaustion and heat. “I... I think so,” she whispered, voice scratchy. “It’s just… so much.”Lucas, still close enough to feel her heartbeat, looked down at her with eyes clouded in emotion. “Tell us how you feel,” he murmured, his fingers brushing her damp hair away from her face. “Don’t hold it in this time.”She closed her eyes, her breath catching for a long, shaky second. “I feel… full. Not just my body—my heart. Like something inside me finally stopped breaking.”Jake’s arms tightened around her as if the weight of her confession threatened to pull her under. “You scared the hell out of us, Lila.”“I scared myself.” She opened her eyes slowly. The dim lighting of the room cast a soft glow on Lucas’s bare chest and Jake’s profile. “I thought I lost everything. I thoug
"You're going through your cycle, sweetheart," Lucas said seriously. His words echoed in my mind as I slowly accepted what was happening to me—it had finally begun.I opened my mouth to speak, but a rough cough interrupted me, my throat too dry to form any words."Water," I gasped between coughs. Lucas reached for the pitcher on my nightstand but muttered under his breath when he found it empty. He quickly left the room and returned moments later with a glass full of water.Tears pricked my eyes at the sight.“Here, I’ve got you, sweetheart,” he said gently, holding the glass to my lips. I drank deeply in three long gulps, feeling instant relief as the dryness faded.Just then, Jake burst through the door with a nurse in tow. But the moment he laid eyes on me, his expression changed to one of shock and realization.“She’s entering her cycle,” Jake stated grimly. The nurse quietly stepped out, sensing the intensity in the room, while Jake remained rooted at the door, visibly shaken. Hi
