INICIAR SESIÓNELARA'S P.O.V.
“NO!” Alpha Broderick shouted, turning his back to me and Luna Raine. His body was shaking, on the verge of shifting, and I glanced down to his claws at his side. He was ready to attack. He had just lost his mate and his son… he had nothing left to lose. “You can’t take her, too!” It was just the distraction I needed. I would not let someone die when I had the power to save them. I closed my eyes, focusing on the poison and damage it had caused. Without her attacker sitting inside the poison, driving it to her heart and brain, it was easy to control it now, and I pushed every bit of strength I had into her. A bead of sweat dripped down my temple as I felt the darkness lick at my ankles before slowly slithering up my legs. It felt so very warm compared to the cold room, and I tried to ignore the hold the darkness had on me as I focused on the Luna. “You’re meddling with my work, healer.” Death warned, the low growl in my head making me lose my focus as my wolf pushed forward again. She was excited by him… his attention. I was terrified. Yet, I needed him. My mother had struck a deal with the Shadow Wolf, and he was it. He had to be. All of my answers sat with him, but I wasn’t going to let someone die just to get them. I could still feel the life inside of the Luna, but I had the feeling it would be gone soon if I didn’t act quickly. Once Death touched her, there would be no turning back. “You cannot have her until she is dead.” I spat through gritted teeth, and almost jumped when he chuckled. The dark, yet amused sound set off alarm bells. He was enjoying this, watching me fight with everything I had to save the soul he was there to claim. I couldn’t afford the distraction of looking up at him, but I was very aware of his dark presence as he watched me work. Quickly, his amusement switched to anger, and he released a low, threatening growl that shook me to my core. I tensed, anticipating an attack. I wasn’t usure if it was due to my continued defiance, or because Alpha Broderick had finally snapped. From the corner of my eyes, I watched as Alpha Broderick lunged at Death.. My eyes snapped open as the Alpha flew backward into the wall behind him. The sound of bone cracking filled the room as he dropped from the wall and landed atop the dresser, but he pushed himself up quickly, stalking toward Death, without any sign of pain or discomfort. The only thing to be seen was his obvious anger. He looked feral. His eyes were black, and he was partially shifted. “Come on,” I said under my breath, knowing I didn’t have much time left, and neither did the Luna. Her body twitched as I continued to fight the poison, pulling it back to the wound so I could cut it or bleed it out before the mage or wolf who created it realized she wasn’t dead yet. My body felt weak as I gave the Luna all of my power and energy, exhaustion taking over. The room started to spin, but I carefully repositioned my feet to hold myself steady. The color hadn’t returned to the Luna’s cheeks, but she looked different, and I listened carefully as I felt a slight thump. Was that… It thumped again, and I laughed in victory. “She’s alive,” I whispered, leaning in closer as I heard a beat. “She’s alive! Now, you are owed nothing!” Alpha Broderick’s ears twitched as I shouted it, and he slowly backed away from Death until he was at his mate's side again. “She won’t be for long,” Death warned, but I pulled back from Luna Raine and faced the monster head on. The darkness filling the room, rushed back to the wall it had come out of. My eyes widened as I realized that while I had honored the gift the Goddess had blessed me with, I had just angered the only person who could give me the answers I desperately sought to clear my parents' names and free my sister. I gasped as my legs were freed from the dark fog, and the freezing air in the room washed over me, shocking me back to life. The Shadow Wolf was only feet away, and my lips parted to plead him to stay so I could learn about my parents, but he had already turned and was walking away. Instinctively, I stepped forward to go after him but was stopped. “You’re not going anywhere! Heal her! Finish healing her!” Alpha Broderick shouted, grabbing my wrist and pulling it quickly until I was facing Luna Raine again. But her heart was beating again, while I couldn't say that my parents' was doing the same. The only person who would know the answer to that was about to step into the darkness. I didn’t know when or if I would ever see him again. Panic flared in my chest, and my breathing came faster as I debated my next move. He was my only hope. I couldn’t let him go, not without getting answers. I ripped my wrist from Alpha Broderick’s grip, his claws slicing into the sensitive flesh there. A hiss left my lips, but I pushed down the sting of pain as I turned and raced straight toward the dark portal closing against the far wall. If I let him go now, my parents would never have their names cleared. I had no choice. “Elara! Stop!” Alpha Broderick growled, but he was too late. I had already jumped, my body cutting through the darkness until I had been consumed by it. The portal closed behind me, leaving me in a void. It seemed empty, but felt alive. The darkness that had been wrapped around me before rushed forward again, this time weaving around my torso and arms as I held them out in front of me to feel for my surroundings, trapping me like a spiderweb. An almost metallic clicking noise began in the distance, and I swallowed hard, realizing that it wasn’t as empty as it had initially seemed. There were other creatures in here, and, from the low, threatening growls that filled the void as I stepped forward with the intention of running, they were hungry. I didn’t make it this far just to be killed by a damned bogyman hiding in the shadows! There had been no time, and I hadn’t thought this through. I had no weapon and nothing to defend myself with. I cried out in shock as a thick arm wrapped around my waist, and I was pulled into someone’s side. “You foolish woman.” The familiar voice of Death growled against my ear, the stubble of his beard brushing against my temple and cheek as the giant man leaned down to scold me. “You have no idea what you have just walked into.”ELARA’S P.O.V.The great hall was louder than I had ever heard it.Laughter bounced off stone walls, glasses clinked together, and the long tables were overflowing with food and drinks as the pack celebrated. My parents sat near the center among the warriors, right next to Thorne. Sarah was wedged between them, her face still blotchy from crying. She hadn’t stopped touching them, holding their hands, gripping their sleeves, as if afraid they would vanish if she let go.I was too, but I had been guided to the head table… a place I no longer belonged. I glanced across the room where Lucien stood with a glass in his hand, smiling and laughing with Braden as if he didn’t have a care in the world, until his eyes met mine. Then I would see the flicker of something unsettling. Without our bond to tell me what he was feeling, I didn’t stand a chance of knowing what he was thinking. He could have been thrilled by our new situation, and I had no way to know until I could get him alone tonigh
ELARA’S P.O.V.Walking through the pack house felt different. It wasn’t because my parents had returned from the dead or the newfound lightness in my chest. The air felt cleaner, the shadows softer, and the lights brighter. It felt as if life had returned to the house. My parents walked on either side of me, their shoulders brushing mine occasionally as if they, too, were afraid this might dissolve into a dream.Lucien walked ahead of us, silent and powerful, but even his shoulders weren’t as tense as they used to be. At the bottom of the stairs, I paused as the front doors were thrown open and a familiar and very tired-looking old man rushed in. His silver hair was disheveled from his patrol shifts, but his eyes were bright with excitement, widening the moment they landed on my parents. “Tom,” Thorne breathed, rushing forward to hug my father. My father smiled, clasping his hand on the man’s back. “Thorne.”“You stubborn bastard,” Thorne muttered thickly. “You always said I was
ELARA’S P.O.V.The steady thrumming of my heart beat was the only sound in the empty void as I ran through the darkness. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t find him, but I knew I needed to. Lucien’s voice was like a faint whisper, teasing me, calling to me. So, I chased it deeper, trying to find my way back to him, but I was stuck.I wasn’t sure how I had gotten here, trapped in the darkness, but I knew I had to get out. Each beat of my heart felt like the clicking of a clock, counting down to my end. I could only remember pain.A tremble moved through my fingers as I kept my hands up in front of me, hoping I would find something but terrified of what it would be. Then my legs began to tingle, and I paused, looking from side to side into the nothingness around me, trying to listen for his voice.“Elara,” Lucien’s voice was muffled, still far away, but a sudden and unexpected warmth on my cheek made my hand fly to it. My fingers only met my skin, but despite the undeniable evid
HERA’S P.O.V.I paced as we waited, unable to stand still. Something was wrong, I could feel it in my bones. My wolf grew more agitated as the silent forest became darker. It felt like even the trees were holding their breath, waiting to see if Lucien and Elara would come back out.Braden shifted, stepping out of formation for the first time since we arrived, and I stopped, turning to face him. "What? What is it?" I asked as he scanned our surroundings. I couldn’t feel anything close, but he seemed to sense something that I didn't. "They're retreating from the border," He said, though he sounded confused, like it wasn't right. "That's a good thing, though, right?" I asked, spinning to face the pond. For a long moment, I watched it, sensing something was off, but I wasn't able to place my finger on it. As I approached, the low waves stopped rolling, and I was finally able to see that the once glossy surface was cloudy, turning it grey. Braden stood beside me, shoulders tense, a
LUCIEN’S P.O.V. I slammed into him mid-lunge, knocking him sideways before his claws could reach Elara’s throat. We crashed to the floor, rolling further away from Elara. My shoulder hit the stones, then my hip, but I didn’t let go. I wrapped my arm around his torso and drove my claws into his side, dragging him with me as we skidded to a stop against the far wall, fighting to keep him as far away from her as I could. He moved faster than any reaper I had ever faced… faster than I had ever been able to move. His hand snapped around my throat, fingers digging into muscle with crushing strength, and he drove me further backward into the stone. “You dare to attack me?!” he hissed with astonishment. I bared my teeth and slammed my forehead into his face, making him loosen his grip. The sound of his nose crunching encouraged me on, and I kicked him back before lunging. My shoulder collided with his stomach as I took him to the ground again. My claws sliced through his chest, barely
LUCIEN’S P.O.V.The world around me slowed as the news shocked me. Elara had killed reapers?“She was furious, demanding you back, and….” Jax paused, and I knew I wasn’t going to like what he said next. “She hit them with a blast and took the souls they had reaped. They died instantly.” No! She couldn’t! She couldn’t hold another soul not unless… Not for the first time, I cursed myself for ever letting her enter the darkness. I should have just thrown her back, tossed her back to her old pack, and let her live her life without being tainted by Death or by me. If this were a curse she would have to carry for the rest of her life, she would one day wake to resent me, and I wouldn’t blame her for it. I would resent me, too. Before me, she was light. She wanted the good in the world and was still full of hope even after everything she had been through. Now she has killed multiple people, and she might not ever be the same.A shark tug through the bond pulled me back to the present. I
