Lyra's POV
By the time we reached the other side of the river, the moon had shifted to its peak.
Orion dragged the boat onto the bank and helped me step out. The earth felt soft under my boots, damp with river mist.
We sat there, just breathing. The air here beside the river was thicker, quieter, more conspiratorial, as though it contained secrets.
"It's almost 11," Orion said, looking up at the sky as though he could read the time on his palm more accurately than a watch. "We camp here tonight. Leave early at dawn."
I furrowed my brow. "Camp where? We don't even have a tent to sleep. And don't you think it's not safe, especially after the no-element-
Lyra's POVI felt the ripple of tension move across the table.Orion's gaze narrowed, and he nodded once. "Good." He leaned back in his chair, the creaking of wood on stone echoing too loudly. Rising to his full height, he gazed down the length of the table. "Keto. Kate. With me."Kate's fork hit the floor for the third time, clattering against the plate this time. She swallowed hard, steadying herself, and rose.Keto strode without hesitation, his composure firm, though his eyes betrayed a bit of curiosity.Orion's gaze swept farther. "Kira," he said to her, his voice deep, contained, "come with us. Just in case we need to treat injuries or emergencies."Kira got up at once, already in a healer mindset, the expression on her face serene but focused.I pushed back my chair, the decision made before I even thought about it. "I want to go too."Orion's eyes flashed over to mine. He remained quiet for a moment. Then, to my amazement, he nodded. "You're free."I rose to my feet, smoothing
Lyra's POVKira nodded a little, but her expression said she didn't trust her. She leaned back in the chair, crossing her arms and legs, her body language closed off.I tried to brighten the mood. "Well, since we're all awake now, let's eat before the day eats us up."Kira leveled me with a look. "Breakfast won't fix this."Kate whispered hard, almost pleading, "Please, Kira."That placated her somewhat. She glanced at Kate, then at me, and finally sighed once more. "Okay. But let me make one thing clear: if you think I didn't see the robe you have on, Ravenna, don't be such a fool."My cheeks flushed with heat. I automatically pulled Orion's robe tighter around me, but the smile that spread across Kira's face warned me it was too late.Kate stared at me with wide eyes, and I could do no more than shrug by way of apology.Kira rose, brushing imaginary specks from her tunic. "Secrets, lies, robes that do not belong to you, this morning is simply full of surprises."She floated to the d
Lyra's POVKate let out a long breath and collapsed onto the chair near her vanity. “Thank you,” she muttered, glancing up at me. “For covering up for me back there.”I crossed my arms and gave her a pointed look. “You owe me.”She giggled sheepishly. "Yeah, I do."I glared at her for a moment, unable to remain silent. "Why did you not simply tell him the truth, Kate? Why did you lie?"Her eyes dropped to the ground. "I don't know. I just… I didn't want him to know anything. Not yet. Maybe never. I'd rather I hurt him, in case he still likes me."Her words hit harder than I had expected, slicing into my chest. I sat beside her. "Exactly my issue with Keto."She flinched at me, her eyes squinting. "That's a lie."I arched an eyebrow. "What's going on?"That is not the same," she told me. "You and Keto? That is nothing like me and Zack. I am doing it to protect him because I don't want to see him so exposed." She stabbed a finger into my arm. "You're keeping away from Keto because you d
Lyra's POVFor a while, it was just all right to fall asleep with my cheek against Orion's warm chest."You are up," he muttered, still a little sleep-tormented.I said, "Yes," hugging him around the waist, holding him close to my body. I was going to hold him forever. His hand caressed down my back with a gentle touch, but stiffened again in his voice; "Today will be a long day."I tilted my head, trying to catch his gaze. "How so?""'Cause Kevin won't talk," Orion said, his countenance hardening. "Meaning I have to approach it another way."A chill ran down my spine. "What plan?"He smiled, a smile that had no kindness in his eyes. "You'll see."I swallowed and nodded. The thing was, I wasn't really sure I did want to see, but I trusted him. Better than that, I loved him.Moving away from the bed, I touched my knotted hair. "And what am I to wear now, since you destroyed my nightgown last night?"That provoked a low laugh from him. He indicated the robe on the chair. "Wear mine."I
Kate's POVI didn’t waste time after leaving Ravenna's room. My mind was already made up, and my body was restless. Keto’s door was slightly ajar when I reached it, and I caught him stepping out, dressed casually, his expression tired but still composed."Going out?" I asked, resting easily against the frame. He looked over at me, surprise warring in his eyes. "Not exactly. Just getting wine from the cellar."I raised a brow. "Drunk night, then?"He half-shrugged, his mouth twisting into a crooked grin. "Who knows what tomorrow brings?"For a moment, there was nothing between us. Then, with a slight tilt of my head, I told him, "Take wine for two. I'll be coming back."His brow shot up, a glint in his eye. "Okay," he said slowly, his tone between amusement and curiosity. "You're welcome."I offered him a quick smile and walked away, my pulse racing more than I'd expected. That went more smoothly than I'd expected. Much more quickly. In my room, I shed my clothes, letting them fall wh
Lyra's POVThen, with a flick of her braid, she was gone, leaving the room strangely quiet. The smile slowly faded from my face as her footsteps retreated down the hall. I leaned back in my chair, staring outside through the window, and her words echoed in my head.I would not like to be alone without a man tonight.Kate needed to fill the void within her with Keto. What about me then? Not after the whirlwind of emotions with Keto, Kevin, and all that Orion had seen in my eyes prior to that.My gaze drifted to the door. My heart began to pound faster.I knew where I was headed.More slowly, I stood and crossed to my closet. My fingers hesitated for a second before pulling out a piece of lingerie, red silk as rich as the room's curtains.I pressed it against myself, my breathing uneven, before dressing.Over it, I drew on a plain nightgown, something respectable enough to cover what lay beneath.I saw myself in the mirror, the high points of my cheeks warm with red. Fear and desire war
