Chapter 5

It’s been three days since their date. Skylar was absolutely keen on seeing her again and Cheyenne seemed to want the same thing.

It was a Saturday noon and Skylar was babysitting while Nadia and Chaskai were out.

“Uncle Sky, who are you talking to?” A little red headed child asked, hopping into Skylar’s lap.

“You’re future Aunty.” Skylar smiled finishing up the text and sending it.

The child beamed as her older brother who had the hair color of his father instead tilted his head.

“Future Aunty? Who is she?” He asked.

“She is a beautiful woman. And I bet you both a nickel you’ll like her.”

“You went on one date with her.” The boy said.

“Well Cam, when you fine your mate, you’ll want nothing more than to be with her.”

Cameron blew raspberry at Skylar.

“Girls have cuties!” Cam teases his little sister Taylor.

“Shut up Cam, we do not!” The young girl yelled.

“Easy now, both of you. You’re father and mother won’t be very happy when I tell them you’ve been fighting.”

“Uncle Sky, when can we see her?”

“Hopefully soon. But she’s human, so I have to take it slow, she’s been hurt, too. I can’t scare her off.”

Both children tilted their heads.

“Hurt? Like a scrape on the knee?” Taylor asked.

“Far worse than a scrape on the knee, little Taylor.” Skylar said, grazing her cheek. “Far worse...”

“Did she break something?” Cam asked.

“No, that’s not it, either...”

The two siblings looked at each other confused but Skylar didn’t expect them to understand.

“Do you love her, Uncle Sky?”

“Of course I do.”

“Does she love you?” Cam asked.

Skylar looked at Cameron a little lost at the question.

Human’s fall in love at a slow pace while for werewolves its instant. He couldn’t really know for sure if she loved him or thought about a future with him.

“If she loves you she would trust you to tend to her broken limb or scraped knee, wouldn’t she?” Cameron asked.

Cameron only being eleven would probably understand the situation a little more than Taylor would who’s only seven.

Skylar smiled at Cameron and ruffled his hair to which Cameron pouted a bit.

“Who’s hungry?” Skylar asked.

“I could eat.”

“I want ice cream!”

Cheyenne sat on the couch of her cozy apartment watching Netflix. When her phone chimed again, indicating Skylar had texted her back, she smiled.

Cheyenne grabbed her phone and read the text.

“We should meet up again sometime soon. When are you free?”

She smiled at the thought of seeing Skylar again.

She moved her thumbs to text back.

“We should meet up. I’m free tonight.”

And then hit send.

As Cheyenne watched her TV, she thought it was about time she quit feeling sorry for herself.

She deserved to feel something other than pain and fear.

After Skylar told Cheyenne he would protect her—no, be her wolf— she couldn’t help but really believe him. She believed that he would never hurt her. Skylar seemed so sincere and went more that out of his way to make sure she was comfortable and safe.

Of course, she talked to Greta about it as well and she agreed. Greta had always seen Cheyenne by her lonesome and thought it wouldn’t kill her to let Skylar in, even if it is just a little.

Of course she couldn’t just trust him off the bat. Every man has their games and she wondered if this was Skylar’s. Preying on her weakness. Using her vulnerability to try something stupid. Yet, part of her felt like that wasn’t the case.

Her phone chimed and she checked it.

“Any ideas as to where?”

Cheyenne thought for a moment.

She didn’t have any ideas on where to go that would be fun. Since she didn’t get out much, the only thing she could think of was staying in and watching some TV.

But she didn’t bother because she was not inviting him to her house and she definitely wasn’t going to his.

“None really.”

Before she could lock her phone, it chimed again and she checked it.

“There’s got to be something you have never done and want to do. Say the word and we will do it.”

Cheyenne thought for a moment.

Well yeah, there’s plenty of things she wanted to do, there’s plenty of things she hasn’t done. Yet, she knew instantly what she wanted to do.

“I’ve never been ice skating. Can you make that happen?”

She waited for the phone to buzz and when it did, she smiled after checking it.

“Of course.”

“How was your week?” Skylar asked.

It was finally Saturday night and Skylar did just as he promised by taking her out ice skating. It was cold, something Cheyenne hated being but it was worth it.

Skylar tonight was wearing his hair in a low ponytail at the nape of his neck. He wore jeans and a black long sleeve shirt and no jacket even though it was extremely cold for her.

“Aren’t you cold?” She asked him.

Skylar chuckled and shook his head.

“No, I uhh, I don’t get cold.”

“Everyone gets cold.”

“Not me. Now tell me about your week.”

Cheyenne smiled slightly.

“It wasn’t a bad week. I went into work four times this week so that was something to do.”

“And the other days?” Skylar asked.

Cheyenne shrugged.

“Stayed home.” She said and lost her balance slightly but steadies herself.

“You okay?” Skylar asked, hovering over her body to catch her if she fell.

“Yeah, I’m fine. What about you? What have you done all week?” Cheyenne asked, trying to play off the fact that she did almost fall flat on her face.

“I babysat today. My niece and nephew.”

“Oh really? What are they like?”

Skylar chuckled.

“They’re both quite the characters. The youngest, Taylor is only seven years old. She’s about as innocent as they come. The oldest is eleven, Cam. He definitely says whatever comes to mind but he’s a smart kid.” Skylar said, remembering how the young boy asked questions about Cheyenne just hours before.

“That’s so sweet. You must love them dearly.”

“I do. Like they’re my own kids. They are even excited to meet you.” Skylar smiled.

“Me?” Cheyenne asked, a gasped and slipped again, this time with no time to steady herself.

Skylar grabbed her arm in hopes to steady her but she flinched and jerked away from him causing them both to fall.

Skylar grunted in slight pain and didn’t move to get up which cause Cheyenne to freak out a little more.

“I-I’m so—“ She noticed a bit of red on the ice and gasped.

“Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, Skylar?!”

He grunted.

“I’m fine, I’m fine.”

She had finally noticed what the cause was. When they both went down, her skate blade had sliced into Skylar’s hand.

“Oh my god, Skylar! I’m so sorry!” She panicked and tried to stand but couldn’t gain enough balance to do so.

“It’s okay, I’m fine. It’s just a little cut.” Skylar said.

“We’ve got to get you to a hospital. You’ll need stitches.”

“No, that’s not necessary.“

“Skylar, come on seriously, you’re bleeding out on the ice!”

She scoots towards him to inspects his wound but there was such little blood that she thought she was in the wrong spot of his hand. But soon realized that nothing was there.

“What the hell...” She mumbled.

This was just like the wolf, the bullet wounds being absolutely horrid one minute and completely gone the next.

She looked up at Skylar for an explanation but he just stared down at her, searching her face for something. Fear? Anger? Denial?

“Your hand...it’s not..” She took her sleeve and wiped the access blood off his hand.

Skylar didn’t pull his hand away from her, he let her inspect it. He let her trace her fingers over where his hand was once sliced.

“You were bleeding. There was a gash.”

Skylar nodded.

She never let his hand go but instead held it up with his palm facing her as if trying to look through it.

“You’re not anymore...”

“No.” Skylar said.

“What the hell happened to it?” Cheyenne asked.

“It healed.” Skylar said.

Cheyenne has the look of complete perplexity on her face. She couldn’t speak anymore. All she could do was look at his hand, how it was once bloody and now just a hand.

“Cheyenne..?”Skylar asked gently.

“It just healed?! Just poof?!”

Skylar could hear her heart rate speeding up. The beating against her chest cavity sounding like a hammer trying to break her ribs.

Cheyenne visibly tensed under Skylar’s gaze which caused him to look up at her, given that he was staring at her chest, listening to her heart but of course to her it looked like he was just staring at her bundled up breasts.

Cheyenne obviously didn’t take too kindly to that and backed— well— slid away from him, her heart beating faster.

“Cheyenne, just calm down. I’ll explain.”

Cheyenne soon started scooting away from him, breathing heavily and heart beating through her chest.

“Cheyenne, listen to me.” Skylar pleaded.

She shook her head, feeling the panic attack already starting. Cheyenne wanted to stop it, not wanting to show any weakness in front of this man, this simple stranger, that she clearly knew nothing about.

Skylar could hear and sense that she was going into an attack and scooted towards her to comfort and calm her but she scooted away.

“Stay-stay away!” She breathlessly breathes out.

Her lips became chapped as her short ragged breathing only got shallower. She felt as though she had a mouth full of cotton balls. Her head buzzed as if she laying against the window of a bus and her lungs felt as though they were a blaze.

She was going to faint at this rate.

And she knew it.

Cheyenne felt the need to let him know that she was already in too deep and she couldn’t stop the panic attack. She wanted to let him know she was definitely going to faint. She always did, but she couldn’t find the words.

At the rate of not being able to breathe, she could only muster up one word.

“F-faint. . .”

Skylar clearly understood and was right there when Cheyenne’s eyes fluttered closed and she fell backwards from her seated position on the ice. Skylar caught her and held her.

With Cheyenne in his arms, he was confused, concerned and worried. It wasn’t unlikely for humans to be shocked at the discovery of werewolves but he was really hoping she wouldn’t faint.

“Damn it. . .”
