LOGINFreya’s P.O.V
“I’m so sorry, Julian.” I petted his light brown hair that still had some blonde highlights on it. “You’ll have to come to the restaurant with me this afternoon.”
“That’s alright.” Julian gave me a sweet smile. “I like the restaurant. Uncle Roger gives me treats sometimes!”
Breathing a sigh of relief, I took my brother’s hand and started walking in the direction of the restaurant. I hadn’t realized just how long I had stayed in the washroom, just staring at the mirror after listening to the girls and in doing so, I had been late to grab Julian from the Kindergarten. As a result, I was almost late to work, so I didn’t have time to send him back home before heading to Roger’s Diner, the place I work at after school.
Since I was a minor and a part-timer, I was only eligible for the minimum wage, but that was fine too. At least it was something. It helped me earn four hundred dollars a week, which was enough to buy supplies for the entire week and pay off some of my father’s debt that he had taken from our neighbours. Unfortunately, I had only joined work last year, out of fear of Julian starving to death, so I hadn’t been able to pay off much. There were still thousands of dollars to pay back and three months left till I turned eighteen and get a chance at a better wage.
Chris, the cleaning guy who was old enough to be my dad, greeted me as I was entering through the back door. “There you are, lad!” He handed me the huge garbage bags he was carrying, almost making me drop them because of the weight. “Throw these for me, will ya? And don’t drop them! You drop, you clean!”
I nodded my head with a forced smile as I told Julian to wait at the door as I threw out the trash. I didn’t bother reminding Chris that throwing the trash was a part of his job, not mine. He wasn’t exactly the nicest of people and I couldn’t afford to be fired from the job.
Taking Julian’s hand once I was done, I entered the restaurant through the back door, through the kitchen and was immediately flooded with all kinds of delicious scents. I felt my stomach rumble as I had only been able to get a sweet bun for lunch at school with the changes that I had in my wallet. But it wasn’t time to eat just yet.
“Roger?” I asked the owner as I saw him sitting at the back with a ton of bills, and his reading glasses sitting at the very edge of his nose. He was a man in his early fifty’s with salt and pepper hair that he liked to keep long, along with a big beard. He didn’t talk much to his employee’s, and was often strict with management, but he was a pretty decent guy. “Can Julian stay here during my shift today?”
Roger frowned as he looked up from the bills, his eyes holding some amount of anger at my question, but since Julian was with me, he didn’t bother scolding me. “He can stay today,” he said in his gruff voice. “Don’t make it a habit, kid.”
“I won’t, I promise.” I told him sincerely, because I knew having a five year old in a restaurant full of grown men and women was no fun. They cussed a lot and used certain terminology that wasn’t fit for a child, but now everyone would have to watch their words and be tight lipped around him. Especially during peak hour.
Seating Julian at the back, next to Roger, I took out his books and told him to catch up on homework while I changed into my uniform; a crisp white shirt, blue knee length skirt and an apron with the Diner’s logo on it. I placed my writing pad in my front pocket and combed my hair so it didn’t look uneven. It was obvious that the cut wasn’t professional, but at least it was short and neat.
“Freya! Customers!” One of the older waiters called out as he came inside the kitchen with his hands full of dirty dishes.
“Got it!” I ran outside to the dining area, ready to take orders, but I stopped dead in my tracks as soon as I was a few feet away from the table.
My heart literally skipped a beat when I saw who I had to serve this afternoon.
Cameron, Derek, Alex and the cheerleaders. And by cheerleaders, I didn’t mean their entireBelfast High Cheerleading squad, but the girls who were always seen hanging off of their arms, their rumoured girlfriends and their besties. The ones who were always making fun of me.
Fuck my life!
Swallowing, I put on my fakest smile as I approached their table. “Are you ready to order?”
Cameron was the first person to notice me, and then, one by one, all their attention turned towards me as several eyes widened and eyebrows were raised in amazement.
“Goodness! The freak show can actually smile!” Derek laughed as he pointed towards me. “What do you think, Trisha?”
I grit my teeth together as Trisha laughed at my face, while placing her hands in front of her face to look like a posh lady. “You called her a freak show yourself! How do you think she looks?”
How? How come everyone I hated was here at this moment? The only reason I chose to work at this restaurant was because it was far enough from school that not a lot of students frequented this part of town. Then why were they all here, at this cheap restaurant, rather than at a fancy Italian restaurant ordering fancy pasta and shit?
But the how’s and why’s didn’t matter, did they? Because Cameron and his team of bullies were already here and from the looks of it…the day was only going to progressively keep getting worse.
Mirage’s P.O.VAlex took my hand and urged me away from the crowd.Freya’s wedding had just concluded and the party was in full swing. The new bride and groom were dancing their second dance alone on the dance floor and since Freya’s biological father was no longer in the picture, Alpha Charles was going to be the one to dance with her next.It was a beautiful moment and I didn’t want to miss it, but apparently, Alex had other plans. He began dragging me away only went the dance was half-way done.“What?” I frowned at him, puffing up my cheeks in disappointment. “I really wanted to dance with you next…”“I have a better place for us to dance at.” He gave me a cheeky smile and began dragging me away from the crowd and to a deserted area of the beach, away from all the celebration.“Where are we going?” I asked impatiently, thankful that my dress went only to my knees. If it had been to my ankles, it would be collecting all the sand and dirt in this beach right now.“You’ll know soon.”
Freya’s P.O.V“I don’t even know why I’m nervous…right?” I asked both Mirage and Sarah as they stood making last minute adjustments to my clothes and make-up. “I mean…its Cameron! I can feel him! He’s not going to run away…there’s not going to be any rain, I checked the weather report like…a thousand times…there’s not gonna be a thunderstorm…oh god! Tides! What if the high tides roll in and drown the entire ve-” “Freya,” Sarah gave me a calm smile… “If you don’t stop panicking, I swear to the Moon Goddess that the only one drowning in the sea tonight will be you and your pretty dress. We get it. You checked all the signs and so did we. EVERYTHING is under control.”I gave her a nervous laugh as my stomach churned with nervousness. “Oh…god!”“Oh no!” Mirage rushed to me with a bucket. “Are you sure you’re not pregnant? You’ve been oddly…fidgety all morning…the entire week to be honest. Even at Sarah’s wedding, you were more worried about everything than her.”“No, I’m not pregnant…I
Sarah’s P.O.VAll I could hope was that by the time her Mating Ceremony came along, her father would be well enough to walk his daughter down the aisle to Alex. Because she deserved that happiness after everything she had suffered. My father held out his hand for me and I got up from my chair to take it, holding onto him firmly as the nervousness finally set in. I was going to be Darcia’s mate today, officially.Freya handed me the bouquet of pink and white carnations and then she lowered the veil over my face.Freya and Mirage then left to go stand at the aisle with the groom and the best men. And I then walked out with my father a few seconds later and stood right inside the door, so we could walk outside as soon as the bride’s welcoming music started playing.“Nervous?” Dad asked me, giving my hand a little squeeze.“A little.” I smiled up at him, so glad to have him by my side right now.“Me too.” He laughed. And then the music started playing and I heard shuffling noises as the g
Sarah’s P.O.VI don’t know why Mirage and Freya kept giving me nervous looks, but I wasn’t the least bit nervous about my own wedding.Honestly, I had thought I would be more than a little nervous. In fact, I had prepared myself to go all Bridezilla on my bridesmaids and probably be nit-picky about everything as well. But now that the day had finally arrived for the Mating Ceremony…I was oddly calm about everything. And why shouldn’t I be? I was already mated to my would-be Alpha mate, Darcia and I could hear his feelings for me loud and clear inside my mind. He loved and treasured me just as much as I did him. I had a wonderful mate, a beautiful family and a wonderful life planned ahead of me amongst my friends and family.Being the Luna had never been my priority, but it had been an added bonus that my mate had turned out to have Alpha blood and that made my parents, who had wanted to force me onto Cameron before he found his mate, immensely happy. What else could I even ask for?“I
Mirage’s P.O.V“Now that everything important has been done and dealt with…are we going to talk about how you deserted us all and went your merry way or are we just going to pretend that you didn’t just act like a major bitch?”Sarah almost spat out her morning coffee while Darcia, Cameron and Alex jumped up from the table and disappeared out the door like little traitors, leaving me to deal with Freya’s wrath all alone. It was a week after my dad had gone away to the Autumn Court with my grandmother and a day since my sister left with her mate for Alaska, with a promise to visit as often as she could. But now that everything was done and dusted…it came time to face the hardest part.Freya and Sarah. The two women who had come to mean more than family to me. And the two women who I abandoned and hid information from as I went with Alistair, with the thought that I might never see them again. For Freya…the betrayal was even deeper, especially because I would’ve never been able to contr
Mirage’s P.O.VThe man that stepped out of the van in front of the packhouse…didn’t look like my father anymore.I remembered a man with light brown hair, fair skin and sparkling amethyst eyes and lips that were always smiling. He used to glow with a certain light, as if he truly was some kind of a fairy…a fairy of joy and happiness and love. But this man…he had dark, matted hair that was cut short plastered to his skull. His eyes were sunken in and his lips were pressed together into a thin line. His skin was ashy and the glow I once knew was all but gone. Moreover, he was now bent at the waist and almost less than half his weight. It was as if those monsters had sucked him dry over and over, making him survive on the bare minimum just so he could once again produce more blood for them. The names of those who had our father hadn't been disclosed by the Queen, but Maze’s mate feared that whoever it was that had him, was very close to the Queen, if not someone from her own coven.
