Alexandra's presence in my mind had only provided a temporary relief before I was yanked back to reality.

Currently, I wore a heavy black cloak with the hood draped over my head, watching as Lucien stood at the packhouse entrance.

There was a crowd gathered to hear him speak, allowing me to blend with the crowd.

His head was held high, proud, like the throne he'd claimed was his.

I could see it in his eyes, though. Roman had gotten more control of him. He was slipping, afraid even.

My memories came and left as they wished, turning my mind into a playground of agony I wasn't prepared to deal with. The only thing that remained a constant in the flash of empty memories I couldn't piece together was that same mane of long brunette hair. And that smile. Her smile that kept me running, putting one foot in front of the other.I spotted her receding back heading into the forest. Not the moon lake, for some reason. Even though I knew safety resided there.I didn't question her choice for much longer, though, before dashing after her, into the forest, while the shadow guards roared aloud, demanding their prey be returned. After barely ten steps inside the thick forest, someone grabbed me from behind and shoved me against a nearby tree.My eyebrow shot up, and I resisted the urge to lift up the girl holding me against the tree and kiss her silly.Because I knew this wasn't my mate. Just someone maintaining her body while I struggled to comprehend the damage I myself had ca

Roman turned to her just as her body bent forward and dissolved into Alexandra.A second later, Alexandra stood, the wound on her neck closing itself."Irina...what are you doing? I thought...you left and..." Roman was a stuttering mess.My body wanted to move, but it felt like something had it glued in place.Alexandra, now Irina, took a cautious step back. "You've lost your way, Roman. Our time is gone."He shook his head, reaching out for her. "No. No, we were robbed of our time.""And now we're doing the exact same thing to them. How are we different?""I never said we were." His voice was pleading now, and his hold on me dissolved gradually. "We weren't allowed to. Irina...all I've done, all I'm doing is so we live.""But we aren't meant to. Can't you see? We've become the very monsters we swore to fight against."The silence stretched until my throat felt too tight and my fingers itched for the girl whose body was now standing upright, blood drying on her neck."Perhaps one day

Something was wrong. That was the first thing I noticed when the body of the beautiful brunette slumped onto the grass outside.I didn't know her, even though my wolf kept telling me otherwise. My body didn't feel like mine anymore, but the only thing that did feel sure was how wrong this was.Blood seeped from a wound on her neck, the red stain matching the one on my mouth.Had I bitten her? That hadn't happened for years now, since I got control of my wolf and the demon inside it."Take the body outside and come back here."That voice rang in my ears, repeating the same order I was sure I didn't want to obey. What I wanted was to be here. Next to this dying girl, and give her life again."What have you done!" A shrill, high-pitched voice called from a shadow.I turned to see a woman dressed in a black cloak, her whole body covered by it.The name came to me without thought or effort, and after it, recognition. "Irina."She should have been dead. I didn't know how I knew, or why it w

I waited for the attack. The inevitable swing of his blade that my whole body prepared to dodge.Instead, he stretched his hand out to Marcus, forcing him to rise."You have not mastered the power within you, child. I can still easily control what is mine, and therefore, I can control you."Marcus stood, his legs shaky as he turned to me with bloodshot eyes."Alex..." His voice was husky and choked, and I could feel the pure panic in it. "Run!"I wanted to stay. To fight for him, with him.But the look in his eyes, the way his fingers flexed. That wasn't my mate. That was a demon threatening to take control of him.Roman walked back to the throne, completely nonchalant, before gesturing towards me. "Kill her and come back. And then I will make you my host in place of this weak body."I turned and ran as fast as I could, not daring to look back.Marcus's heavy snarl caught my ears just as I reached the doors to the throne room.I barely made it into the hallway before the door was blas

I watched Marcus charge off, his back fading gradually before I gathered the courage to follow.Lucien had never been kind to me. I didn't even think I cared because of me.A part of me simply longed for the humanity Marcus had latched onto this whole time to stay sane, to stay with me.He'd been so calm about admitting his willingness to kill his own brother, I'd almost been frightened. The run to the palace felt longer than it should have.We did all we could to avoid the guards, and when we couldn't, Marcus killed them in cold blood.By the time we made it to the palace, something about him was just different."We're going to go in through the tunnels. I'll fight, you find somewhere to lay low till the coast is clear." He said, pulling open one of the hidden hatches that would lead into the palace."Marcus...""What?" He snapped, turning to me with wild eyes. Not just wild eyes. The veins around his left one were pulsing black, and I barely managed to swallow a scream that would ha

The run felt longer than it should have, probably because of the pain spiking from my thigh. Each time they caught up to me, I fought them off, keeping most of my attention on getting to that barrier.I knew the risk of breaking through, but if I could just get her to come out instead, then maybe the lake could be preserved along with those there too.But the mindlink was still blocked for some reason. Each attempt to reach her felt like pure static.By the time I reached the actual barrier, I was tempted to simply bring it down. But the lake was too important, too powerful for me to allow Roman to contaminate it.My back crashed against the barrier when one of the shadow warriors shoved me into it.I bared my teeth, howling before dodging another blow. Its fist crashed into the barrier instead, brushing off it harmlessly. There was no way to win this fight without being able to fight back.My eyes trailed from the two soldiers to the trees that surrounded the lake.At first there was

“That’s Alpha Marcus, heir of the Ashclaw Pack!”“Did he just call that omega servant his mate?”The room erupted into loud murmurs, which only subsided when the man, Marcus, tore his gaze from me to the guests. The Ashclaw Pack. They were known for their large territory and merciless mentality. An

I stood beside my parents in the grand hall, not as their daughter, but as a slave. Their eyes were glued to the large bronze doors at the far end of the room, awaiting the entrance of my brother, their pride and joy, and the only person in this family who could bother to be kind to me. “Alexandr

The Ashclaw packhouse was exactly as the stories described.Large. So large one could get lost in the halls for days. The carriage had carried us past the outer gate where the town was, and stopped at the ancestral packhouse.“Welcome back, Alpha Damarus.” A woman stepped out of the large palace-li

My body recoiled as my father approached, along with the other members of the Ashclaw Pack who had come for Nathan’s ceremony.Mother followed a few feet behind, her face clouded with worry.“Alpha Damarus, I do apologize for my outburst earlier. I was simply shocked by what happened. Perhaps we co
