Chapter 3

Author: Barky Biscuit
Arwen was trembling uncontrollably. His lips quivered, but he couldn't force out a single word.

He clearly remembered that after the fire five years ago, everyone told him that it was Sienna who'd risked her life and braved the flames to save him.

When he opened his eyes after the disaster, Sienna was the first wolf he saw. She'd held him and wept about how terrified she'd been, claiming that she'd overcome all fear just for him.

As for me, I was covered in wounds and barely alive when the healers carried me back to the pack. I spent two weeks unconscious in that hut with my life hanging by a thread before finally waking up.

Everyone assumed I'd simply gotten hurt from recklessly running around, including Arwen. He'd even harshly scolded me for it, calling me immature for always causing trouble and saying that I was nothing like the brave and kind Sienna.

Now, the memory crystal laid the bloody truth bare before him.

Sienna's face had gone pale as well. She clutched Lorcan's arm and frantically explained, "N-No… That's not what happened… I was there, too… I was just too scared…"

Lorcan frowned. He looked at the bloody version of me in the memory, then at Arwen's ashen face. For the first time, doubt flickered in his eyes.

Maverick stood up as well, looking utterly shell-shocked. "I-Is this real? Velda…"

I was losing strength. The stabbing pain in my head came in waves, each stronger than the last.

I could feel my wolf mourning and slowly weakening, but the memory crystal would not stop there. It would keep draining my life until it'd played every core memory tied to the three werewolves or until I died.

The memory crystal flashed again and began to extract the second memory.

This time, the light was focused on Lorcan on the tribune. His heart sank as a cold, ominous dread washed over him.

The vision shifted to the Alpha's bedroom three years ago.

Lorcan lay on the bed, convulsing violently. Black veins spread from his heart across his entire body.

His eyes were shut tight, and his breathing was faint.

"It's wolfbane," the pack healer announced in a voice heavy with defeat. "I can't cure the giant wolfsbane's toxin."

Lorcan's expression turned as grim as Arwen's. He remembered this scene perfectly.

Three years ago, during a battle with a rival pack, he'd walked straight into an ambush and been poisoned.

The entire pack had been utterly helpless. Everyone believed he was going to die, and that the Moonshadow pack was about to lose its Alpha.

In the memory, Sienna knelt by his head and wailed in anguish. Arwen and Maverick stood nearby, looking grim and solemn.

As for me, I was there, looking at Lorcan as he lay dying. Then, I turned and walked out of the room.

When Sienna saw me leave, she immediately turned to Arwen. "Look at her, Arwen. Lorcan's dying, and she doesn't even care at all."

Arwen watched me walk away with eyes full of bitter disappointment.

The vision followed me as I sprinted out of the pack grounds and into Black Marsh, where the legendary witch was said to live.

Black Marsh was filled with danger. A toxic miasma drifted through the air, and it was a forbidden land no werewolf dared tread.

Still, I rushed straight in without hesitation. The mud of the swamp quickly swallowed my legs up to my knees.

Step by treacherous step, I struggled through the filth until I finally arrived at a small wooden shack covered in tangled vines. That was where I met the legendary witch.

She was as shriveled as a dead branch, but her eyes shone with a sharp light.

"What do you want, little pup?" she asked.

I dropped to my knees before her and pleaded in a shaking voice, "Please save my fated mate. He's been poisoned by a giant wolfsbane."

The witch let out a harsh, cackling laugh. "I can save him, but what will you give me in return? My help doesn't come cheap."

I lifted my head and met her eyes with an unwavering gaze. "I'll give anything to save him."

The witch studied me as a strange smile curled her lips. "Sure.

"Your wolf is remarkably strong and full of life. You're sturdier than most wolves, and your body heals faster, too.

"So here's the deal—I'll save him, and in exchange, you'll give me your health.

"From this day forward, your body will be frail. You'll be plagued by constant sickness and will never again endure the rigors of battle. Your wolf will become brittle, and every shift will bring you agonizing pain.

"Do you accept?"

Lorcan carried me into the Evernight Forest. There was no moonlight there, only endless darkness and the dangers of lethal beasts. For an exiled wolf, this place was hell. But Lorcan didn't mind. He found a cave and gently laid me down on a smooth stone slab. Then, he sat beside me and just stared at me, staying in that posture for a day and a night. After losing its fated mate, his wolf slowly began to collapse. His strength was draining away, and his consciousness was fading. That was when the hallucinations began. He thought he could see me smiling at him, walking behind him as I used to, and quietly keeping him company."Velda."He reached out and tried to touch the illusion, only to grab at nothing. Then, he let out a laugh that sounded more bitter than any cry."See? This is my punishment. I lost you, and now, I can never get you back."…Back in the pack, Arwen and Maverick built an empty grave for me in the hills behind the pack grounds. They didn't place a headstone

Amid Sienna's terrified screams, Lorcan forced her jaw open and poured deep purple liquid down her throat. It was the antidote from the witch. The crowd heard a shrill, agonizing wolf howl echo from within Sienna's body before her wolf was forcibly put into an eternal slumber. Her eyes rolled back in pain as she spasmed. Her once-radiant skin shriveled and grayed, aging decades in a matter of seconds. Then, Lorcan's bloody fingers swiped across her face. A surge of destructive power followed, destroying the beautiful features she'd once taken pride in and used to charm and deceive. Her flesh twisted into charred, jagged scars. From this day forward, she would walk the earth with the face of a demon.Lorcan released her and let her collapse to the ground like a heap of mud."Sienna, you deceived your Alpha, stole credit, and framed a fellow packmate. Your powers are revoked, and from this day forward, you are forever barred from setting foot in the Moonshadow pack."Any packmate

Time seemed to stand still. The entire square was so quiet that a pin drop could have been heard. Every eye was fixed on the execution platform, on me bound in silver chains, wearing a faint smile with my head bowed forever.I was dead. At the exact moment the truth was laid bare to the world, I breathed my last breath in front of everyone and the three wolves I'd loved more than my own life."No…"A raspy, inhuman whimper broke the silence. It was Lorcan. He stumbled forward and threw himself onto the execution platform. With shaking hands, he unfastened the silver chains tying me up and pulled my cold, limp body tightly into his arms."Velda… Velda, wake up…"Please look at me. I'm sorry… I'm so, so sorry…"He frantically called my name and tried to warm my cooling skin with his strength. He tried to call for my wolf through our mind link, but silence was his only response. My wolf had completely dissipated now."Ah!"Lorcan let out a primal scream toward the heavens. It w

The final memory had no images. There was only sound. It was the voice of the wolf soul resonating from the depths of my being. It was frail yet filled with reluctance and lingering affection."Lorcan, did you know? I recognized you the very first time I saw you."You were my fated mate, and my wolf rejoiced for you. It promised to follow you forever and guard you till the end."Lorcan froze to the spot as if he was struck by lightning."Fated mate…" The two words shattered his last line of defense like a heavy hammer.A wolf only had one fated mate in their lifetime. It was the most sacred bond bestowed by the Moon Goddess, but he'd personally tortured his mate to the point of ruin. The voice continued, "Arwen, my brother… When we were little, you always stood in front of me. You said you'd protect me for life, and I never forgot that. So when danger struck, my wolf told me that this time, it's my turn to protect you. It's willing to go as far as to die for you."At this time,

The light from the memory crystal slowly dimmed.By the time the third memory ended, the entire trial square fell into complete silence. Everyone was shaken by the brutal truth revealed in the three memories. They looked at me hanging on the execution platform, covered in wounds and barely breathing. The contempt in their eyes slowly faded and was replaced by shock and finally, by guilt and sympathy. It dawned on them that I was never the traitor of the pack. I was a hero who'd traded my flesh and life to protect the pack and the wolves I loved. And now, they'd dragged me, their hero, onto the execution platform."No… No…"Arwen dropped to his knees and slammed his fists into the floor. Every cold shoulder and harsh word he'd ever thrown at me now returned to him like sharp daggers, carving into his heart.Like he'd lost his mind, Maverick wouldn't stop clawing at his fur. "My fault… This is all my fault…"He couldn't even look at me. He was terrified of seeing the sightless

Maverick remembered now.Two years ago, when he'd been on the brink of death, Sienna had placed the Flame Lily by his pillow the next morning. It was still wet with morning dew. She'd told him that her nightly prayers had moved the Moon Goddess, who guided her to the Flame Lily. He'd survived because of the Flame Lily. It never occurred to him that it was paid for with my left eye and half my life.In the vision, I killed the petrifying basilisk. Dragging my mangled body, I plucked the Flame Lily and stumbled blindly out of the valley.By then, I'd lost too much blood. My consciousness was beginning to blur, and the agony in my left eye nearly made me faint. At the entrance of the valleys, I ran into Sienna, who just happened to be passing by. She seemed visibly startled to see me drenched in blood. "Velda?"I reached out to her like I was grabbing my last thread of hope. With shaking hands, I shoved the blood-stained Flame Lily into her hands."Sienna… Quick… Give this to M
