Chapter 8

作者: Sugar Bubble
She had only played a harmless little prank with her father. She would go back and explain everything to him, and everything would be fine.

“Rachel, come here, quick!”

Stephen waved at her from afar.

Rachel’s gloom was swept away in an instant. She hopped over, then grabbed Chloe and Stephen’s hands. She was bounding with joy, a bright smile on her face.

After Lydia came back home after buying groceries, Joseph was finally released from the bedroom.

There were no records of incoming calls on the phone.

Half an hour ago, Stephen posted on his page.

[Just experienced the joy of being a father. Children are adorable.]

All nine photos he posted were of him, Chloe, and Rachel in all sorts of heartwarming and goofy poses. Anyone who saw the photos would lament how happy they were as a family of three.

Joseph felt not a trace of emotion. He guessed that he was probably the only one who could see the post.

At slightly past seven in the evening, the mother-daughter pair finally came back.

“Rachel said that you’re not feeling well. Do you feel better now?” Chloe asked.

“Daddy, I saw you stuck in your room for so long and was worried that you were having heart problems again and needed rest. So I asked the driver to send me to the kindergarten instead. So sorry I forgot to ask you in the rush,” Rachel said.

She intertwined her fingers, looking sensible yet remorseful at the same time.

“It’s okay, I don’t blame you,” Joseph said as he caressed her head. “I just feel a little sad I didn’t get to attend your graduation ceremony.”

Clearly, Rachel had deliberately locked him in the room so that Stephen could attend her graduation ceremony instead.

However, he didn’t even care about what Chloe was doing to him. Why would he count it against a six-year-old?

“Daddy…” Rachel hugged him tight. “I knew you wouldn’t blame me. You’re the best daddy in the whole wide world!”

“You’ll be going to grade school soon, and you’re still so mischievous.” Joseph shook his head, looking helpless.

Chloe’s lips were a small smile as she watched them.

The sky had turned completely dark. After telling Rachel a bedtime story, Joseph went back to his bedroom to wash up.

When he came out of the washroom, he felt a warm woman’s body against him.

“Joseph, it’s been a long time…”

Her tender voice sounded in his ear.

“I feel a little faint today,” Joseph said flatly.

Chloe’s breath caught as she gradually let go of him. “Are you alright? Shall I bring you to the hospital to get it checked?”

“No need, I’m fine.”

Joseph threw the covers back and laid on the bed.

He felt the other side of the bed sink in as Chloe’s voice sounded close. “Your mother’s death anniversary is coming soon.”

“Yeah,” Joseph hummed.

His mother had always been poor in health and died of sickness two years ago.

“I’ll go visit her grave with you this year,” Chloe said as she hugged him from behind. “Okay?”

She had been busy the previous times and couldn’t make it.

“Sure,” Joseph said.

Warm sunlight seeped into the room.

Although Rachel had graduated from her kindergarten, there was still some time before grade school started. During this period, Joseph would bring her for piano and taekwondo classes.

When he returned home at three in the afternoon, he received a letter.

Joseph entered his bedroom and locked the door.

His visa was enclosed in the envelope.

Immediately, he booked a flight for Dameer that would depart the next afternoon.

-

Joseph didn’t have many things to bring with him, and he was all packed and ready a long time ago. He took out his marriage certification and placed it under the table lamp.

After he left, Stephen would be able to officially join the family.

Joseph was sure Chloe would be pleased with their sixth wedding anniversary surprise.

Rachel was stunned when she noticed the little boy by Joseph’s side.“Daddy… Who is he?” She knew the answer even as she asked the question.“Rachel, he is my son,” Joseph said. “Oh,” Rachel said. Her face stiffened. A moment later, she forced a friendly smile on her face. “Hello, little brother. I am Rachel Gibson. You can call me Rachel. We’ll be family from now on.”“No, I don’t want you as a big sister! You’ll steal my daddy away from me!” Simon shook his head profusely as he looked warily at Rachel.Rachel stood there, feeling rather awkward.Joseph looked quietly at her and suddenly realized something.Did the Gibsons not tell her the truth after all these years?Still, it was indeed way too cruel for a young child like her.“Rachel, I have my own family now. I’m not your daddy anymore. I only have one son,” Joseph said as he hugged Simon tightly in his arms. “There are some things…that are better for Chloe to tell you herself.”With that, he made a move to leave.

“After the fifth season of Flowers In A Fog, many of your fans have been looking forward to a book signing event with you. It’s such a pleasant surprise that this is coming true so quickly.”A small smile hung on Joseph’s lips, hiding his nervousness. “This is my first time interacting with my readers offline.”He had previously drawn his comics under the pseudonym ‘Joe’, but that was only because he had to juggle writing with his work as a newscaster at the TV station, which slowed down his writing progress. When he went to Samelia, he finally had loads of time to do what he enjoyed.Joseph never expected Flowers In A Fog to be so well-received by so many people. The moment he arrived at the event venue, he saw crowds gathering at multiple floors of the shopping mall, all of them raising banners of the characters in his story. When he finally made his appearance, all his readers who came to attend his book signing event erupted into thunderous applause.Joseph felt tears well up

Perhaps she was originally just a wretch to him, but now, she had become a heinous criminal deserving of death. She had ruined his wedding and even said nasty things. She truly was deserving of death.Chloe grimaced, wishing she could turn time back by ten minutes. She would raise a toast to him and carry herself with dignity. However, what she said just now ruined everything.Chloe was escorted out of the wedding hall by the security guard. When she turned around to take a final look at Joseph, all she could see was his back profile as Elaine said something into his ear.Chloe lit a cigarette in the empty corridor. She herself wondered what exactly she felt for Joseph. Was she just being obstinate, as what Stephen said, without an ounce of love? But when she saw Joseph and Elaine kiss, Chloe had her answer. She loved Joseph. She wanted to see him whenever she returned home. She wanted him right by her side where she could touch him. She wanted that sense of security with him

It was clear as day that Chloe and Joseph shared an unusual relationship.Elaine’s eyes narrowed as a look of displeasure flashed across her eyes.Everyone cast Joseph a strange look. It wasn’t hard to guess what they were all thinking.Joseph was once married, and Elaine seemed ignorant of that fact.“Ms. Gibson, I’m honored that you’re attending Joseph and my wedding,” Elaine said with a half smile. “The marriage you two shared has ended. The fact that you came shows that like my husband Joseph, you’ve let go of your past relationship with him.”Chloe remained silent. With everyone’s attention now on her, Elaine went on.“A toast to my husband’s ex-wife, Ms. Chloe Gibson. Thank you for everything you did in the past to ruin your marriage so that I had the fortune of marrying Joseph and spending the rest of my life with him.”Her tone sounded pleasant, but her words were sharp as knives.Everyone in the crowd could sense the tension in the air.Chloe’s jawline tensed up and

It was a pity she never held a wedding ceremony with Joseph. She couldn’t even say she shared the same experience as Elaine in her happiness.“Joseph,” Chloe recited his name inwardly. When his gaze coincidentally landed on their table, she thought that perhaps they shared telepathy. However, Joseph first looked at Susan, who was next to Chloe, before his gaze met hers.Chloe felt her heart skip a beat. She saw shock register in Joseph’s eyes, but it vanished at the next second. He regained his composure almost immediately. He gave a small smile before quickly shifting his gaze away.He didn’t seem particularly affected by her appearance.Chloe stared at Joseph’s face, refusing to let go. However, he had already turned to look at the woman next to him.It made Chloe feel as though that brief exchange of glances was nothing but an illusion. That fleeting look of surprise in Joseph’s eyes seemed almost like a reflex which he recovered from very swiftly. It was as though Chloe w

The photos were far from enough.Chloe wanted to see him in the flesh and have their gazes meet. She wanted to see from Joseph’s eyes whether he still had any feelings for her…A single look from him was enough for her to throw all caution to the wind, including offending the Young family.“You frightened me!” Susan said, clutching her chest. “For a while, I thought you were interested in my cousin-in-law. I knew it. He isn’t your type at all!”“Let’s go,” Chloe urged.Susan heaved a sigh of relief and the two of them walked into the wedding hall. Many guests had already arrived, including relatives, friends, and some business partners that worked with the Young family.Susan brought Chloe to the VIP table, which was nearest to the stage.“It’s been a while, Mr. and Mrs. Young,” Chloe greeted the elders whom she hadn’t seen for a long time before taking a seat. The wedding ceremony soon began.A video started playing on the huge screen, the scene seemingly filmed from the br
