Chapter 2

Author: Waverly June
After that, we exchanged numbers. I also learned Chloe was a senior at a nearby university.

I told her I needed to lend my main gaming account to a relative and had her add my alt account instead. Chloe did not suspect a thing and promptly deleted the main one.

When I got home, Jared rushed over, practically buzzing. "So? How'd it go? Was she actually hot, or ugly enough to haunt your dreams?"

I furrowed my brow and put on a pained expression. "She's a nice girl. Don't talk about her like that."

That only made Jared laugh harder. "I knew it! She's totally hideous! I saw that she deleted me too.

"Disgusting. Uses AI photos to catfish people, and the second she gets called out, she rage-deletes everyone. Pathetic."

He spat a few more insults, then finally settled down and went back to his desk to keep gaming. I stared at his back and lowered my gaze.

Jared was my uncle's only son. The moment Uncle Max heard I was renting a place near Jared's university for work, he wasted no time shipping him over.

"He's your own cousin! The dorms are miserable. How could you let him suffer like that? I'll give you 500 a month for groceries. Just let him stay. You boys can look out for each other."

I had wanted to refuse, but Mom talked me into it. She was a shrewd woman who had never mistreated me, but in her eyes, her brother's family always came before her own.

Whenever they needed anything, she gave everything she had without a second thought, never imagining she was raising a pack of ingrates.

In my last life, after I died, my spirit lingered. I watched with my own eyes as my uncle's family hounded my parents into dropping the charges. My parents were simple, honest people, but the grief of losing their son made them refuse. They were determined to make Jared pay for what he had done.

My uncle's family responded by setting fire to our home, and my parents burned alive.

With no one left to pursue the case, it went cold.

I pulled my gaze away and buried the hatred behind my eyes.

In the days that followed, Jared busied himself chasing new girls while I went to see Chloe every week. Whatever she wanted, I got it for her. Whatever she wanted to eat, no matter how far, I took her.

When I found out she was stressed about the data analysis for her senior thesis, I stepped in and walked her through the entire process using my own experience.

"Wow, you're amazing! My advisor basically makes us figure everything out ourselves. If we're stuck, we're supposed to ask the upperclassmen, but they don't even give us the time of day.

"I spent almost two months just figuring out how to compile the data, and I haven't even started on the analysis!"

I gave her a gentle pat on the head and told her not to worry. I had mastered all of it back when I was finishing my own degree.

"Once your thesis is approved, I'll help you polish up your resume. The HR manager at my company is someone I went to school with. I can ask her to put in a good word."

Chloe's eyes lit up on the spot, and she sent over her resume before I could blink.

She had made Dean's list all four years, taken first place in a statewide entrepreneurship competition, and won a regional innovation contest.

"Your resume's seriously impressive. I figured with how much you game, your academics would be..."

She caught the teasing in my voice and punched my arm twice in mock outrage. "Excuse me? Gaming is gaming, and studies are studies. I know how to keep my priorities straight, thank you very much!"

I gave her nose a light poke and grinned. "Good to know. Turns out our Chloe's got some serious brains, after all."

Chloe threw herself into my arms, beaming. "That's only because I've got such a great mentor! I am so lucky!"

Chloe's beauty was only the surface. What I saw was her intelligence, her courage, her kindness, and her resilience.

I had approached her with nothing but revenge in mind. However, after truly getting to know her, I had fallen hopelessly and irreversibly in love with her.

"Chloe, will you be my girlfriend? For real this time."

The face captured clearly on the footage was unmistakably Jared's.The case was settled. Jared was expelled from the university on multiple counts of academic fraud. He did not even qualify for a delayed graduation."You did this on purpose, didn't you? Everything you said back then, it was all part of your plan!"Jared tried to lunge at me, but campus security held him back.I just stood there with a smile, looked him in the eye, and gave him a slow nod. Then I turned and walked out.As the plagiarism scandal made headlines, the webcam product from my company attracted massive attention. The moment it hit the market, it sold out instantly.I was promoted by my supervisor and became second-in-command of the R&D department.By then, Chloe had officially graduated, started her new job, and accepted my proposal. When both families gathered to discuss wedding plans, a figure burst through the doors of the banquet hall."I knew it! I knew I wasn't seeing things! You piece of trash,

Jared had never had a mind of his own when it came to academics. He had followed his father's advice and picked the same major as mine, figuring I had the experience to help him along.Well, I had certainly helped, just not in the way they had hoped."I didn't write this thesis willingly. His father threatened me into producing it. The defense questions as well. I compiled them in advance and had him memorize the answers."The investigation committee confirmed with Jared's academic advisor that his father was currently in prison, then struck Jared's grades from the record. However, because I was implicated in ghostwriting, they were still prepared to involve the police. That was when I raised my voice."Before I could hand any of this material to Jared, my parents were already under physical threat. I had to rush home to deal with the assault charges and the legal proceedings that followed. I never gave him the thesis."He broke into my family's home and stole my files and my res

Now, at last, there was an answer."We found this notebook in the foundation of the Trent family's old house. It contains a detailed record of a trafficking case involving Ms. Trent. Through our genetic database, we've confirmed that you were sold to the Trent family approximately 50 years ago."As for your biological parents, they passed away 20 years ago."We finally learned the truth. Mom had been beaten into submission. She had been trafficked into the Trent household as a child, beaten every time she disobeyed, beaten until she stopped resisting, beaten until every last ounce of her spirit was broken and every memory of where she truly came from was erased. She had been reduced to nothing more than a lifelong servant to a family of monsters, convinced that the man who terrorized her was her brother.Which meant that when Mom helped me bring them down, she had done it against every instinct that decades of fear had drilled into her. When she learned that she had been stolen

"It hurt so bad. He punched me three times. I honestly thought I was done for."When I saw Chloe's eyes welling up, I felt a pang of guilt. I pulled her into my arms and tried to walk it back."I'm fine, I'm fine. Look at me, I'm right here, aren't I? You know what kept me going? The thought that I hadn't married you yet. That got me so fired up I turned into a superhero and took them all down single-handedly!"Chloe burst out laughing through her tears and pressed a finger against my chest, pouting playfully."You and that big mouth of yours. But I'm glad your parents are okay. If anything had happened to them, I never would've forgiven myself. And next time something like this comes up, don't go throwing yourself into danger like that. I worry about you, you know!"I held Chloe close and let her feel my warmth. In truth, I had not been entirely sure my plan would work. Uncle Max's network ran deep.My parents were honest, simple people. Without intervention, they would have sp

With so many witnesses easy to track down, the investigation moved fast. While my parents and I were still in the hospital, the police called with an update. The case was heading to trial."Thirteen individuals are implicated in a pattern of sustained violence, threats, and other criminal activity that has caused significant harm to the community. Based on preliminary findings, we expect sentences of up to ten years, along with full asset seizure."Before the trial, Jared came to find us. He wanted us to sign a leniency statement."This is all because of you! My dad only got arrested because you set him up! You've been scheming against my family from the start! You did it on purpose! First, you moved out so I couldn't finish my thesis, and now, I'm being held back a year."You knew I'd go to my dad for help, so you made sure you weren't home, just so you could call the cops and make it look justified! I'm telling you right now, if my dad does time, it goes on your family's record

"Forget the second option! I'll beat you to death today and dig through your stuff to find what I need!"He swung again, and a rush of warmth poured from my nose. As he wound up for a fourth punch, a gunshot cracked through the air and froze him in place."Police! Hands in the air, now!"Mom, Dad, and I were all taken to the hospital. Dad had taken a beating, but thankfully none of the blows had landed on his head.Since the police had arrived in time, they did not manage to deal a great deal of damage to me either. After icing my face for a while, the swelling went down."Mr. Kendall, everyone involved has been apprehended. We'll need statements from your entire family."Mom gave her account first, explaining that Uncle Max and his men had surrounded the apartment from the start. The building's security cameras could confirm it."After they found out my son wasn't home, they started beating my husband, trying to force him to give up our son's location. They said if my son didn'
