Chapter 4

Author: Waverly June
"Oh, come on. Jail, schmail. Just be careful and don't get caught by the university. It's not that big a deal!"

Before I could say another word, Uncle Max hung up. The dial tone buzzed in my ear. I let the phone drop and set my jaw. If they wanted to spit in my face after I tried to be civil, then I had no reason to hold back.

Mom came up behind me and patted my back. "Mason, your uncle's not wrong, you know. Just be careful about it. Your cousin worked hard to get into college. We're all family. If we can help, we should. Someday they'll return the favor."

Return the favor? Right. The only favor they had ever returned was shoving me off a building.

Yet I knew that no matter what I said, Mom would tell me to grit my teeth and bear it. She always had.

I said nothing. I just stared at her, my face full of disappointment, and slammed the door on my way out.

When I got back to the apartment, Jared was waiting for me, just as I had expected. His expression was dark with fury.

"So that's what you're up to! Stealing my dad's money is one thing, but now, you're trying to kick me out? Do you have any conscience at all? I'm warning you. If you keep trying to get rid of me, I'll make sure everyone you know turns their back on your family.

"You know what happens if my dad makes a few calls back home, right? Your family's problems will be a whole lot bigger than this."

Uncle Max knew plenty of thugs in their hometown, and he had been riding their coattails for years.

I clenched my teeth so hard that they ached. My parents lived in the city, but no one could predict what those people might do.

That was the real reason Mom always caved. Whenever Uncle Max so much as hinted at rallying the hometown crowd, the threat spoke for itself.

When I did not respond, Jared took my silence as surrender and broke into a smug grin. "Nothing to say now, huh? Oh, and that thesis? The university's already on my case about it. Get it done. If I miss next month's deadline, it's gonna be a real problem for me."

He turned around and went right back to his game.

I stood there, jaw tight.

In the days that followed, I quietly sat with a notebook and put together the thesis materials, squeezing in time between sessions to see Chloe.

When Jared saw me working on it, he assumed I had fallen in line for good and could not resist rubbing it in. "See? Being obedient's a good look on you. If you'd just behaved from the start, we wouldn't have had all this drama."

With the thesis seemingly taken care of, Jared threw himself even harder into partying. He went out drinking every night and barely came home at all.

Then one day, he asked how much was left. I told him just the formatting.

"Cool. I've gotta turn it in the day after tomorrow, so pull an all-nighter tonight and wrap it up. Once it's done, I'll have my dad put in a good word for your family back home."

He strolled out the door to go drinking, and I knew my window had arrived.

That night, I hired a moving crew at no small expense. Within two hours, every last thing in the apartment was gone.

I called the landlord to let him know I had moved out. I did not even ask for the deposit back.

By the time Jared stumbled home the next morning, still reeking of last night's drinks, the place was stripped bare.

"Hey, Mason. That kid who says he's your cousin won't leave the apartment."

When the landlord called me, I could already picture the look on Jared's face. "That guy's been harassing me for days. That's why I moved. He's out of his mind. Put him on the phone. I'll talk to him myself."

A second later, Jared's screaming flooded through the speaker. "Where the hell are you? You know my thesis is due! You think you can just disappear on me?"

I held the phone away from my ear and waited for him to run out of steam. Then, at my own pace, I finally said, "Can't graduate? Aw, that's a real shame."

Then I called out the landlord's name, loud enough for Jared to hear, and told him everything left in the apartment was free to toss. The landlord said he understood and would have the place cleared out, then hung up.

He was a local man. Getting rid of one punk who refused to leave was hardly a challenge.

The face captured clearly on the footage was unmistakably Jared's.The case was settled. Jared was expelled from the university on multiple counts of academic fraud. He did not even qualify for a delayed graduation."You did this on purpose, didn't you? Everything you said back then, it was all part of your plan!"Jared tried to lunge at me, but campus security held him back.I just stood there with a smile, looked him in the eye, and gave him a slow nod. Then I turned and walked out.As the plagiarism scandal made headlines, the webcam product from my company attracted massive attention. The moment it hit the market, it sold out instantly.I was promoted by my supervisor and became second-in-command of the R&D department.By then, Chloe had officially graduated, started her new job, and accepted my proposal. When both families gathered to discuss wedding plans, a figure burst through the doors of the banquet hall."I knew it! I knew I wasn't seeing things! You piece of trash,

Jared had never had a mind of his own when it came to academics. He had followed his father's advice and picked the same major as mine, figuring I had the experience to help him along.Well, I had certainly helped, just not in the way they had hoped."I didn't write this thesis willingly. His father threatened me into producing it. The defense questions as well. I compiled them in advance and had him memorize the answers."The investigation committee confirmed with Jared's academic advisor that his father was currently in prison, then struck Jared's grades from the record. However, because I was implicated in ghostwriting, they were still prepared to involve the police. That was when I raised my voice."Before I could hand any of this material to Jared, my parents were already under physical threat. I had to rush home to deal with the assault charges and the legal proceedings that followed. I never gave him the thesis."He broke into my family's home and stole my files and my res

Now, at last, there was an answer."We found this notebook in the foundation of the Trent family's old house. It contains a detailed record of a trafficking case involving Ms. Trent. Through our genetic database, we've confirmed that you were sold to the Trent family approximately 50 years ago."As for your biological parents, they passed away 20 years ago."We finally learned the truth. Mom had been beaten into submission. She had been trafficked into the Trent household as a child, beaten every time she disobeyed, beaten until she stopped resisting, beaten until every last ounce of her spirit was broken and every memory of where she truly came from was erased. She had been reduced to nothing more than a lifelong servant to a family of monsters, convinced that the man who terrorized her was her brother.Which meant that when Mom helped me bring them down, she had done it against every instinct that decades of fear had drilled into her. When she learned that she had been stolen

"It hurt so bad. He punched me three times. I honestly thought I was done for."When I saw Chloe's eyes welling up, I felt a pang of guilt. I pulled her into my arms and tried to walk it back."I'm fine, I'm fine. Look at me, I'm right here, aren't I? You know what kept me going? The thought that I hadn't married you yet. That got me so fired up I turned into a superhero and took them all down single-handedly!"Chloe burst out laughing through her tears and pressed a finger against my chest, pouting playfully."You and that big mouth of yours. But I'm glad your parents are okay. If anything had happened to them, I never would've forgiven myself. And next time something like this comes up, don't go throwing yourself into danger like that. I worry about you, you know!"I held Chloe close and let her feel my warmth. In truth, I had not been entirely sure my plan would work. Uncle Max's network ran deep.My parents were honest, simple people. Without intervention, they would have sp

With so many witnesses easy to track down, the investigation moved fast. While my parents and I were still in the hospital, the police called with an update. The case was heading to trial."Thirteen individuals are implicated in a pattern of sustained violence, threats, and other criminal activity that has caused significant harm to the community. Based on preliminary findings, we expect sentences of up to ten years, along with full asset seizure."Before the trial, Jared came to find us. He wanted us to sign a leniency statement."This is all because of you! My dad only got arrested because you set him up! You've been scheming against my family from the start! You did it on purpose! First, you moved out so I couldn't finish my thesis, and now, I'm being held back a year."You knew I'd go to my dad for help, so you made sure you weren't home, just so you could call the cops and make it look justified! I'm telling you right now, if my dad does time, it goes on your family's record

"Forget the second option! I'll beat you to death today and dig through your stuff to find what I need!"He swung again, and a rush of warmth poured from my nose. As he wound up for a fourth punch, a gunshot cracked through the air and froze him in place."Police! Hands in the air, now!"Mom, Dad, and I were all taken to the hospital. Dad had taken a beating, but thankfully none of the blows had landed on his head.Since the police had arrived in time, they did not manage to deal a great deal of damage to me either. After icing my face for a while, the swelling went down."Mr. Kendall, everyone involved has been apprehended. We'll need statements from your entire family."Mom gave her account first, explaining that Uncle Max and his men had surrounded the apartment from the start. The building's security cameras could confirm it."After they found out my son wasn't home, they started beating my husband, trying to force him to give up our son's location. They said if my son didn'
