Chapter 3

Author: Snail
I lowered my head, my eyes welling with tears. Any explanation I could offer would be meaningless now, because from start to finish, Domenico had never cared about the truth.

I was so tired, too tired to even argue anymore.

After that day, I moved into the east wing suite on my own. For three full days, I didn't go downstairs even once. And in that time, the entire estate transformed as though it had a new mistress.

The staff began taking Valentina's orders first. The kitchen prepared special meals for her. Even the Ferrante family's private doctor made three visits a day to the master bedroom.

Everyone revolved around the baby in her belly, while I, the actual wife, might as well have ceased to exist.

On the fourth night, the estate hosted a private dinner. The Silvestri family was coming to discuss a partnership on an arms shipment route, and Domenico had to be there.

I hadn't planned on attending, but Domenico came to my room personally. He draped a jacket over my shoulders, his voice gentle.

"There will be a lot of people tonight," he said. "You're my wife. It wouldn't look right if you weren't there."

I looked at myself in the mirror. I was pale and thin, like someone who'd had the life drained out of her in just a few days.

But I followed him downstairs anyway.

The foyer was packed. There were high-ranking members of the family, Silvestri associates, bodyguards, mistresses, and politicians, all dressed to the nines with glasses clinking and laughter filling the room.

And Valentina was sitting in the seat to Domenico's right, the one that had always been mine.

She smiled the moment she saw me walk in. "Nadia! I thought you weren't feeling well enough to come."

Domenico frowned slightly, and I could tell he'd noticed the seating arrangement too. But before he could say anything, one of the Silvestri men raised his glass with a grin.

"Don Ferrante certainly has it good. A lovely wife and a woman carrying his heir."

Knowing laughter rippled through the room. My fingers curled tight, and Domenico's expression went cold. "Watch your mouth!"

The man backtracked with a quick smile. "My apologies. Just a joke."

But everyone in that room knew it was more than that. Then Valentina clutched her stomach, her face draining of color. "Domenico, my stomach… Something hurts."

He was on his feet almost instantly, steadying her. "Get the doctor!"

The entire dining hall erupted into chaos. The private doctor rushed in.

Valentina clung to Domenico's sleeve, tears streaming down her face. "I only had one sip of champagne tonight. Why is this happening?"

The doctor's expression changed. "There's something wrong with the drink. Someone added a substance that induces contractions in pregnant women."

The room went dead silent. Every pair of eyes turned to me, because just minutes ago, I was the one who had handed Valentina that glass.

My mind went blank.

"It wasn't me," I said.

The words came out on instinct, but Valentina was already staring at me with red, swollen eyes. Tears fell one after another, and her voice broke. "Nadia, I know you hate me, but the baby didn't do anything wrong!"

Domenico hurled his glass onto the floor. It shattered on impact. The look in his eyes was terrifying.

"Bring me everyone who touched the drinks tonight."

The guards moved immediately. It wasn't long before his Underboss, Rocco Carini, returned, his face grim.

"Don, the security footage shows the drink passed through your wife's hands. And we found the remaining substance in the east wing suite."

My blood turned to ice. I understood immediately. This was a setup, and every piece of it had been aimed at me.

"It wasn't me," I said. "I didn't do anything."

I tried to keep my voice steady, but no one believed me. Every shred of evidence pointed in my direction.

Valentina collapsed against Domenico's chest, sobbing so hard she could barely breathe. "Domenico… I'm so scared…"

He stared at me, and those eyes I'd loved for years now held nothing but disappointment and cold. "Nadia, when did you become this person?"

For a moment, even breathing hurt. But nothing I said would change his mind.

"Take my wife back to her room. She is not to leave the estate grounds without my permission."

I looked at him one last time. This was his choice. He would rather believe a story full of holes than trust the woman he'd married.

Late that night, I got a call from my brother, Alessio Nucci.

"Tomorrow at dawn, you disappear," he said. "Every record, every trace, every piece of your identity gets wiped clean. As far as the world is concerned, Nadia Nucci will no longer exist."

He paused. "This is the last time I'm asking. Are you sure?"

I didn't hesitate. "I'm sure."

The next morning, a black sedan pulled up to the back gate of the estate. I slipped inside without a sound. The driver gave me a small nod.

"Everything's in place. The body double has been positioned in your room. Female, same height and build as you."

His tone was perfectly even. "In 10 minutes, there will be a fire in your room, controlled and untraceable, and as far as anyone will know, you died in it.

"Your belongings have been replicated down to the last detail, the clothes, the watch, the cane, even the perfume on your collar. Your name is where it needs to be. The evidence will hold. Enough to convince anyone, and enough to make him grieve."

I let out a slow breath. "Do it. Let's go."

Five minutes later, flames engulfed my room. I sat in the back of the sedan, watching everything I'd known burn, and whispered to myself, "Goodbye, Domenico. We will never see each other again."

I was certain that the rest of my life would be steady and uneventful. What lay between Domenico and me was separated by death and more pain than I could measure, and none of it would ever bring us together again.I never imagined he would come looking for me. But through a tip from a mutual acquaintance, he tracked me down. One day, I closed a major deal and was heading out to sign the contract in person. I'd dressed carefully for the occasion, sharp and polished in something understated that carried authority. I looked like a woman who knew exactly what she was doing.I arrived at the meeting point as arranged and pushed open the door, only to freeze where I stood. The person sitting inside wasn't the business partner. It was Domenico, whom I hadn't seen in a long time.He had wasted away in the time since. The commanding presence that once defined him was gone entirely. His eyes were dull, heavy with exhaustion and wear, with none of the fire he used to carry. The moment he sa

No one knew that I had faked my death and made my way back to my homeland, the coast of Cedral.I was the only daughter of one of Cedral's oldest and most powerful financial dynasties. My family's roots ran deep, with influence stretching across ports in multiple countries along the southern coast. We were old money in every sense of the word.I had been the treasure of the family from the day I was born, adored and sheltered by my parents and my brother. I could have lived my entire life in comfort and security, backed by a fortune most people couldn't imagine. But my younger self had despised everything about the rigid, predictable world I'd been born into.I'd met every eligible young man the families in our circle had to offer. They were polished, accomplished, and impossible to fault. Still, every single one of them was the same kind of safe, buttoned-up, and utterly lacking the raw edge I craved. Then I turned 19, and at a private cocktail party, I met Domenico. One look, a

After the party, Valentina was seething, but she still wanted to give them both one last chance. She went to Domenico on her own, deliberately softening her approach, and offered what looked like a humble apology."Domenico, I was wrong. I shouldn't have gone ahead and thrown the party without talking to you first."She put on the face of a woman who understood, who was considerate of his position."I get it. Nadia only just passed, and if you got engaged to me so soon, it would look terrible for you. I was being naive."Then, with a trace of quiet hope, she laid herself bare. "I won't push you. I can wait. However long it takes, I'll wait until you're ready to accept me."But Domenico didn't soften in the slightest. He looked straight at her. "Don't bother waiting. I will never be with you, not in this lifetime."The color vanished from Valentina's face, but Domenico wasn't finished."I'll honor the promise I made. Your child will be the heir. But until that child comes of age

Valentina finalized every detail of the party in no time. She invited all the prominent figures in their circle, along with every elder and relative in the Ferrante family. She was determined to use the evening to cement herself as the undisputed mistress of the estate. On the night of the party, she dressed to perfection. The gown was stunning, and she wore it like she'd been born for it. She moved through the crowd with easy grace, every inch the hostess. Most of the guests knew which way the wind was blowing and played along. They approached her one after another with smiles and congratulations, every word a compliment about her soon becoming Domenico's wife. The endless stream of flattery fed her vanity exactly the way she needed it to, and she kept a radiant smile on her face the entire night. She was certain that after tonight, no one would ever hold the dead Madre over her head again. But just as the evening was about to formally begin, when the atmosphere in the room was a

After I was gone, Domenico fell apart completely. He blamed himself over and over, his mind trapped in a single relentless thought. If he hadn't insisted on locking me in that room, I never would have died. The guilt ate at him every waking moment, pressing down on him until he could barely breathe. After my funeral, he shut himself inside the master bedroom and didn't come out.He drowned himself in alcohol day and night, letting himself deteriorate piece by piece. The man who had once led the Ferrante family with ruthless precision and quiet authority was reduced to a hollow shell, with none of the sharpness he'd once carried. Every trace of the person he used to be was gone. His room was littered with empty bottles, and the air permanently reeked of liquor. The moment his mind cleared even slightly, my face would flood back in. The way I'd looked at him in silence, the disappointment in my eyes, all of it was seared into his memory and refused to fade.Whenever he thought abo

The black Maybach tore through every red light on the way there. Domenico sat in the back seat, his face dark enough to silence the entire car.No one dared to speak. Rocco sat in the passenger seat, his back soaked through with cold sweat. He'd been at Domenico's side for years, and this was the first time he'd ever seen the Don lose control like this.Just ten minutes ago, Domenico had mobilized the city's entire fire response network, blocked off roads, evacuated surrounding blocks, and ordered his private medical team on standby. The full weight of the Ferrante empire had been set into motion, all because of a single sentence. "The Madre's room caught fire."But even so, by the time the car pulled up to the estate, the flames had already torn through half the east wing. Smoke billowed into the sky, and the air was thick with the acrid stench of char.Fire hoses blasted water in every direction. The staff and guards were on their knees across the lawn, none of them daring to lo
