Avery's POV

The car ride felt longer than usual. Avery sat in the back seat, clutching the envelope that held the DNA test results. Her fingers trembled slightly, but her grip never loosened.

Outside, the streets passed by in a blur, and she couldn't even hold a memory of any place or thing she was looking at. Inside her chest, her heart was beating faster and everything felt painfully clear.

She was going back to the place she had never truly called home; the Wellesley estate. Not even when she was supposed to be Henry Wellesley's wife. Not even when she lived under its roof for a short time, before her world turned upside down.

She could still remember the last time she had stepped foot inside this house. It had been Grandfather Wellesley’s birthday, a day that was supposed to be about celebration and family.

But for her, it had turned into a quiet disaster. The memories came flooding back now, uninvited but sharp: the stiff smiles, the cold stares, and the tension that seemed to

Asher's POVAsher nodded. “I told him very clearly to stay away from you and the boys. Just because you have a past, that he doesn’t get to poke around your life like it still belongs to him. And he definitely doesn’t get to go near our sons.”She stared at him in shock for a moment, then her eyes dropped again. There it is. The shift in her expression he had noticed earlier. A quiet wash of relief, the tension in her frame starting to ease. But then something else crossed her face, something deeper.Guilt.“Avery?” he asked gently, crouching down in front of her. “What is it?”“I should’ve told you,” she said softly. “About him. About the talk we had that day at the park. It was just… I didn’t want to stir things. I didn’t want you to think I was hiding something. I was scared that if I said anything, it would make it real.”Asher reached for her hand. “You were protecting yourself. I get that. But you don’t have to do it alone anymore.”Her eyes met his, glassy with emotion. “I was

Asher’s POVAsher dropped Nolan off at the office before driving straight home. His hands were steady on the wheel, but inside, a storm brewed.Kelvin was a problem. Not just because of what he did to Avery in the past, but because of what he could do now. One wrong word. One slip. If he suspected the boys were his…No. Asher couldn’t allow that. The sky was already turning a dull grey when he pulled into the driveway. Avery’s car was still parked outside. Good. She hadn’t left. Not yet, because he planned on keeping them at his house for as long as it was humanly possible. He stepped inside the house, locking the door behind him. The familiar scent of home wrapped around him, soft, clean, warm. But it didn’t calm him the way it usually did. There was a soft clatter from the kitchen. He walked in and saw Avery at the counter, placing slices of fruit onto a plate. The twins sat at the table, kicking their feet under their chairs, talking quietly.Neal looked up first. “Asher!”He smile

Asher’s POV Asher’s jaw flexed. Of course he didn’t. Avery hadn’t exactly gone around handing out wedding announcements, to a wedding that didn’t happen, but Asher didn’t feel the need to correct his assumptions of being married to Avery. The fact that he didn’t know the dynamics of their relationship didn’t also give Kelvin the right to go playing detective around her life, especially not with the boys.“You didn’t know because she didn’t owe you that explanation,” Asher shot back coldly.Kelvin’s eyes widened, and he quickly added, “But we spoke—recently. Briefly. And she didn’t say a word about knowing you. She didn’t tell me you were involved. I thought she’d lost her memory or something, she said she was different. But she never once said she remembered you or anything about your life together.”Asher’s hands tightened into fists at his sides. He knew what Kelvin was implying. If he Asher was the father of the boys, then it meant that he knew Avery seven years ago and they had

Asher’s POV Kelvin walked into view. And Asher caught the full look of the man he had gotten a glimpse of at the café the day he met Avery. Still lean. Still with that fake, polished charm. His hair was slicked back. His suit crisp. But what struck Asher the most was the lack of anything behind his eyes. No guilt. No hesitation. Just confidence. He entered the room with a smile, the kind that came too easily, too polished, clearly practiced. “Mr. Storm. What an honor. I wasn’t expecting…” he began, voice smooth, almost rehearsed, as if trying to catch control of the situation before it slipped. But Asher wasn’t in the mood for pleasantries. He raised a hand, palm facing out, stopping Kelvin mid-sentence without saying a word. The gesture was quiet but firm, final. His eyes, sharp and unreadable, locked onto Kelvin’s with an intensity that made the latter visibly stiffen.“Sit,” Asher said flatly, his voice cold and controlled as he gestured toward the lone chair across from him.Kel

Asher’s POV Nolan hesitated. “That’s what some coworkers assumed. Nothing was ever confirmed. But the timing? Suspicious.” He said.Asher didn’t say anything for a moment. Gloria, the woman they had met the other day, had said the same thing. So it was possible that the reason why Kelvin had ended things with Avery was because he was with another woman. It could also be that Avery had caught them together and ended things before the disappearance. He let the silence stretch between them as the car hummed down the road. His grip on the wheel stayed firm.Kelvin hadn’t just lied to Avery, he’d hurt her in a way that made her leave everything behind. Her job. Her identity. Maybe even her own sense of self. And now, that same man had shown up at the school of the twins. Asking questions.Asher’s stomach coiled tighter with every thought. He was already driving ten miles over the speed limit. He caught the look Nolan gave him, before slowing down. Nothing would come out of him getting a s
