Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Evil SIL
After the assembly, stories about my “deeds” spread like wildfire in Atherton University.

“Throwing her weight around.”

“Jealous of a poor student.”

“Forcing her own mother to abuse her position.”

Quinn became everyone’s inspirational little sweetheart, while I was painted as the vicious, spoiled heiress.

Louis didn’t even bother pretending anymore.

He stopped bringing me breakfast and stopped discussing research data with me. Instead, he devoted all his time and energy to celebrating Quinn securing the graduate-school slot.

I came across the photo he posted on his social media. Quinn was holding a cake, while he gazed at her with doting affection.

His caption read: [We’ve finally made it through the toughest of times. Congratulations to our small-town scholar.]

I scrolled past without a change in expression, then blocked him.

That afternoon, I was summoned to the dean’s office.

When I pushed open the door, Mom was sitting behind her desk.

I thought she might feel at least a little guilty. Maybe she’d even offer a few words of comfort, if only for appearances.

Instead, she didn’t so much as look up.

“Hand over the core data from your national-level research project. Make a copy for Quinn.”

I froze, certain I’d misheard her.

“What did you just say?”

She finally looked up, her brows drawing together.

“Quinn may have secured her graduate school program, but her thesis still needs work.

“Your project is a perfect fit for her research. Let her use your data, and she’ll be able to graduate with honors.”

I stared at her, a chill creeping through me. Suddenly, I was reminded of the year I took the SAT.

Desperate to make Mom proud, I’d pushed myself to the limit and become the city’s top science student.

When I was awarded prize money, I didn’t spend a cent on myself. Instead, I scrimped and saved to buy her an expensive silk scarf.

I’d been so excited to give it to her and held it out for her.

She didn’t praise me. She didn’t even try it on.

The very next day, I saw that scarf around Quinn’s neck.

When I confronted Mom, she didn’t even hesitate to defend herself.

“The color is too flashy. It doesn’t suit me. And poor Quinn has never had anything nice. It’s much better suited to her.

“You’re the city’s top student. Surely you can do without one scarf?”

She was right. I could do without it. So she could take away my spot in the graduate school program, too.

And now, she wanted to take the core data I’d poured my heart and soul into, data I’d earned at the cost of my health, and use it to pave the way for someone else.

“Mom.”

My eyes burned, and my voice trembled.

“I’m your daughter, too. Have you ever, even once, felt sorry for me all these years?”

Mom paused, caught off guard for a moment.

Then irritation took over. She slammed her hand against the desk.

“Leah, what is wrong with you now?

“You’ve always had the best of everything. Quinn can’t even afford a decent computer. Why are you so determined to hold that against her?

“As dean, it’s my responsibility to look out for every underprivileged student! And as my daughter, you should understand that better than anyone!

“If you keep being so selfish and petty, don’t you dare call me Mom again in the future!”

I looked at her furious face.

At last, I understood what all that talk of a loving mother-daughter bond, all her claims of being selfless and impartial, really meant.

I was nothing more than a prop she used to maintain her public image.

Tears welled in my eyes, but I forced them back.

I took a deep breath and wiped the corners of my eyes.

“Fine.

“Professor Shaw, I’ll hand over the data.”

“No... You can’t do this to me...”Mom shook her head frantically. “Leah, no matter what, there’s nothing wrong with helping underprivileged students!“I devoted myself to education. I wanted children who couldn’t afford school to have a chance to study. I sacrificed my own family for the greater good!”I let out a cold laugh, pulled a file from the folder, and tossed it onto the table in front of her.“Sylvia Shaw, enough with this self-righteous performance. Stop pretending you’re some great, selfless educator.“Take a look. Do you know what this is?”Mom’s trembling hands opened the file, and her eyes widened. It was a report on Quinn’s actual family background.“Quinn was never an underprivileged student.“Her uncle is Mr. Hammond from the state department of education, and he happens to oversee senior personnel appointments at your university.“You think I didn’t know?“You spent years providing her financial aid and showing her favoritism. You even went so far as to ta

Quinn and Louis stared at me, wide-eyed, as if they were seeing a ghost.Mom looked even more stunned.“Leah?!”As usual, she immediately put on her authoritative airs and pointed at me, scolding, “Have you lost your mind? Do you think you can sit there?!“Do you even know what kind of occasion this is? You show up dressed like that, pretending to be some big shot?“Get down here right now! Stop embarrassing me!”The conference room fell completely silent. With an impassive expression, I did not even bother to lift my eyes to them. Before I could say a word, the two security officers standing behind me shot them a cold glare.“Enough!”They stepped forward, one on each side, grabbed Mom by the shoulders, and forced her back into her chair. The university president was scared out of his wits. He pointed straight at Mom and screamed, “Sylvia Shaw! Are you completely blind?!“This is Ms. Collins, sent here by the nation’s highest security authority! She is a senior official at

News of the scandal at the final defense hearing spread throughout the entire education sector in just a few hours. The senior administrators at Atherton University were furious, and by that very night, the city revoked Mom’s title of “Inspirational Figure in Education.”Inside the dean’s office, Mom was disheveled. Gone was the polished, proud woman she had always been. She paced restlessly around the room.“Professor Shaw, the authorities have already formed an investigation team. They’ll be stationed at the university tomorrow.”Her assistant stood nervously at the door, delivering the report with trembling caution.“What are you panicking about?”Mom spun around, her eyes bloodshot. She gritted her teeth and growled, “This was all a setup by that ingrate!“As long as we find her, as long as I can show she gave the data to Quinn voluntarily, I can prove my innocence!”Even now, Mom still refused to admit she had done anything wrong. She pulled out her phone and called someo

Three days later, at the Atherton International Convention Center, the final defense for the National Young Scientist Award was packed to capacity.Seated in the audience were not only top scholars from leading universities, but also senior officials from the state’s Department of Education.Mom sat in the front row, carrying herself with effortless poise as she smiled and accepted the compliments from those around her.Onstage, Quinn held a presentation clicker and spoke confidently as she walked everyone through the data on the giant screen.“...In conclusion, this data model not only solves the current energy-consumption problem, but also provides an entirely new theoretical foundation for future cutting-edge fields. That concludes my defense. Thank you.”Quinn gave a slight bow, and a wave of enthusiastic applause erupted from the audience.Yet the chief expert seated at the center of the judges’ panel didn’t clap. Professor Fowler adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses and stared

"Incompetent! Both of you are completely useless!"In the dean's office, Mom was furious.Quinn was crying so hard her face was streaked with tears, while Louis stood with his head lowered, silent."You couldn’t even solve such a minor problem after pulling three all-nighters? What on earth are you good for?"Mom was shaking with rage. The vice president's position was right within reach. How could anything go wrong at a time like this?Louis gritted his teeth before finally speaking."Professor Shaw, this isn't a minor problem. Leah... She left something behind on purpose."The data she gave us is missing the most critical algorithm. If we can't find her and complete that section of the code by the day after tomorrow, we'll make a complete fool of ourselves at the defense!"Mom froze for a moment. Then fury blazed in her eyes."I knew it! I knew that ungrateful daughter wouldn't be that generous!"She deliberately left us this mess on purpose just to humiliate me and force m

For the next two weeks, the storm gradually died down, and Atherton University seemed to return to normal.Meanwhile, Quinn took the data I'd left behind and, with Louis's help, pieced together a research paper. The moment the paper was published within the department, it caused a sensation. The sophistication of its data models and the sheer scope of its analytical logic were far beyond what anyone would expect from an undergraduate.Quinn was instantly put on a pedestal, hailed across the entire university as a "prodigy."Louis posted a photo of Quinn’s back as she stood in the lab. His caption read:[Talent always speaks for itself. Without the suppression and bullying from those who abuse their power, you've finally proven your talent to the world.]The comments were filled with praise for Quinn and people tearing me down.[Turns out Leah's SCI papers were only successful before because she was riding on Quinn's coattails!][Exactly. The moment Leah left, Quinn produced a
