Chapter 4

Autor: Evil SIL
Early the next morning, at a secluded meeting point on the outskirts of Atherton, I sat inside a black military SUV and signed my name on the confidentiality agreement.

A staff member handed me a metal case.

"Ms. Collins, according to regulations, you must surrender all personal communication devices before entering the base.

"From this moment on, your security clearance requires strict non-disclosure. Your project records will be sealed, and your affiliation with the base will remain classified.

"Until the project is declassified, your identity in the outside world will not be shown. Are you ready?"

I nodded and took out my phone.

"Can I make one last call?"

The staff member nodded.

I dialed Mom's number.

The phone rang for a long time before she finally answered. Her voice was cold.

"What is it now? You already gave Quinn the data. What else are you trying to pull?"

I looked out at the barren landscape beyond the window, my voice calm.

"Mom, I'm not going to graduate school anymore. I'm leaving."

There was a momentary pause on the other end.

Then her voice turned mocking. "Leah, are you done with this little game of playing hard to get?

"Not going to graduate school? Do you really think you can survive without me?

"You're only doing this to force me to give the spot back to you! Let me tell you right now, dream on!

"If you've got that much pride, then don't ever come crawling back to me!"

Listening to the certainty in her voice, I didn't argue.

I simply replied, "As you wish."

Then I hung up and dropped my phone into the metal case.

The vehicle doors shut, and the SUV sped northwest toward the endless sea of sand.

Meanwhile, Atherton University was glowing with lights.

After successfully securing a graduate-school recommendation at a top university for the underprivileged student Quinn Hammond, Mom had been named one of the city's "Top Ten Inspiring Figures in Education."

Tonight, the university was holding a celebratory banquet in her honor.

Inside the hall, Mom stood beaming with pride, wineglass in hand, accepting congratulations from university administrators and members of the media.

Quinn wore an expensive haute couture gown, paid for with my mother's own salary.

She leaned against Louis, triumph written all over her face.

"Professor Shaw truly is selfless. She was even willing to give up her own daughter's spot. What a remarkable sense of integrity. She's a role model for all of us!"

Surrounded by praise, my mother beamed.

"Not at all, not at all. As educators, we're supposed to treat every student equally. Quinn worked hard and earned this. It's what she deserves."

Just then, Vincent Daly, a vice dean who had never gotten along with Mom, approached with a wineglass in hand.

There was a teasing glint in his eyes as he deliberately jabbed at her.

"Professor Shaw, on such an important occasion, how come your daughter, Leah, isn't here?

"I heard she hasn't even been attending classes lately. Could it be that she resents your decision as dean?"

The atmosphere around them immediately turned awkward.

Quinn's eyes reddened at once, and she spoke in a wounded voice.

"Maybe Leah is still angry with me... It's all my fault..."

Louis slipped an arm around her, his heart clearly aching for her.

"It's not your fault. She's the one who's petty!"

Mom's expression darkened.

The next second, she connected her tablet to the hall's giant screen.

"Leah is petty and has been skipping classes for half a month because she's jealous of Quinn!

"As dean, I have always stood on the side of principle, never family. I will never abuse my position for personal gain!

"If she refuses to abide by the university’s regulations, then as dean, I will initiate her official dismissal right now!"

The entire hall erupted in an uproar.

Quinn was so delighted she nearly jumped for joy.

As long as I was expelled, all the research achievements I'd left behind at the university would belong to Quinn.

Mom quickly logged into Atherton University's central academic administration system and entered my student ID.

Without the slightest hesitation, she clicked the confirmation button to "Cancel Student Enrollment."

However, the moment she clicked it, the giant screen in the grand hall suddenly flickered, and a system alarm blared throughout the hall.

The academic administration system that had been displayed on the screen was forcibly disconnected right after.

Several lines of large text appeared in the center of the screen:

[This individual's files have been encrypted and locked by the nation's highest security authority!]

  • Mom Gave Away My Grad Spot   Chapter 11

“No... You can’t do this to me...”Mom shook her head frantically. “Leah, no matter what, there’s nothing wrong with helping underprivileged students!“I devoted myself to education. I wanted children who couldn’t afford school to have a chance to study. I sacrificed my own family for the greater good!”I let out a cold laugh, pulled a file from the folder, and tossed it onto the table in front of her.“Sylvia Shaw, enough with this self-righteous performance. Stop pretending you’re some great, selfless educator.“Take a look. Do you know what this is?”Mom’s trembling hands opened the file, and her eyes widened. It was a report on Quinn’s actual family background.“Quinn was never an underprivileged student.“Her uncle is Mr. Hammond from the state department of education, and he happens to oversee senior personnel appointments at your university.“You think I didn’t know?“You spent years providing her financial aid and showing her favoritism. You even went so far as to ta

Quinn and Louis stared at me, wide-eyed, as if they were seeing a ghost.Mom looked even more stunned.“Leah?!”As usual, she immediately put on her authoritative airs and pointed at me, scolding, “Have you lost your mind? Do you think you can sit there?!“Do you even know what kind of occasion this is? You show up dressed like that, pretending to be some big shot?“Get down here right now! Stop embarrassing me!”The conference room fell completely silent. With an impassive expression, I did not even bother to lift my eyes to them. Before I could say a word, the two security officers standing behind me shot them a cold glare.“Enough!”They stepped forward, one on each side, grabbed Mom by the shoulders, and forced her back into her chair. The university president was scared out of his wits. He pointed straight at Mom and screamed, “Sylvia Shaw! Are you completely blind?!“This is Ms. Collins, sent here by the nation’s highest security authority! She is a senior official at

News of the scandal at the final defense hearing spread throughout the entire education sector in just a few hours. The senior administrators at Atherton University were furious, and by that very night, the city revoked Mom’s title of “Inspirational Figure in Education.”Inside the dean’s office, Mom was disheveled. Gone was the polished, proud woman she had always been. She paced restlessly around the room.“Professor Shaw, the authorities have already formed an investigation team. They’ll be stationed at the university tomorrow.”Her assistant stood nervously at the door, delivering the report with trembling caution.“What are you panicking about?”Mom spun around, her eyes bloodshot. She gritted her teeth and growled, “This was all a setup by that ingrate!“As long as we find her, as long as I can show she gave the data to Quinn voluntarily, I can prove my innocence!”Even now, Mom still refused to admit she had done anything wrong. She pulled out her phone and called someo

Three days later, at the Atherton International Convention Center, the final defense for the National Young Scientist Award was packed to capacity.Seated in the audience were not only top scholars from leading universities, but also senior officials from the state’s Department of Education.Mom sat in the front row, carrying herself with effortless poise as she smiled and accepted the compliments from those around her.Onstage, Quinn held a presentation clicker and spoke confidently as she walked everyone through the data on the giant screen.“...In conclusion, this data model not only solves the current energy-consumption problem, but also provides an entirely new theoretical foundation for future cutting-edge fields. That concludes my defense. Thank you.”Quinn gave a slight bow, and a wave of enthusiastic applause erupted from the audience.Yet the chief expert seated at the center of the judges’ panel didn’t clap. Professor Fowler adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses and stared

"Incompetent! Both of you are completely useless!"In the dean's office, Mom was furious.Quinn was crying so hard her face was streaked with tears, while Louis stood with his head lowered, silent."You couldn’t even solve such a minor problem after pulling three all-nighters? What on earth are you good for?"Mom was shaking with rage. The vice president's position was right within reach. How could anything go wrong at a time like this?Louis gritted his teeth before finally speaking."Professor Shaw, this isn't a minor problem. Leah... She left something behind on purpose."The data she gave us is missing the most critical algorithm. If we can't find her and complete that section of the code by the day after tomorrow, we'll make a complete fool of ourselves at the defense!"Mom froze for a moment. Then fury blazed in her eyes."I knew it! I knew that ungrateful daughter wouldn't be that generous!"She deliberately left us this mess on purpose just to humiliate me and force m

For the next two weeks, the storm gradually died down, and Atherton University seemed to return to normal.Meanwhile, Quinn took the data I'd left behind and, with Louis's help, pieced together a research paper. The moment the paper was published within the department, it caused a sensation. The sophistication of its data models and the sheer scope of its analytical logic were far beyond what anyone would expect from an undergraduate.Quinn was instantly put on a pedestal, hailed across the entire university as a "prodigy."Louis posted a photo of Quinn’s back as she stood in the lab. His caption read:[Talent always speaks for itself. Without the suppression and bullying from those who abuse their power, you've finally proven your talent to the world.]The comments were filled with praise for Quinn and people tearing me down.[Turns out Leah's SCI papers were only successful before because she was riding on Quinn's coattails!][Exactly. The moment Leah left, Quinn produced a
