Chapter 1

Author: Many Floaters
The day the court summons arrived, I'd just gotten home from working late.

I pulled it up on my computer, expressionless, and scanned the details. The plaintiff was my mother, Sandra Lennox. She was demanding 6,000 dollars a month in support, back pay for the months she claimed I owed, and a public apology.

My fingers paused on the mouse. I closed the page.

Then, my phone rang, the screen flashing "Mom".

I let it ring for a second before answering.

She skipped the pleasantries entirely. "Keira, you got the court summons, didn't you? Send me 10,000 dollars a month, and I'll drop the whole thing right now."

I leaned against the cold wall, my voice flat. "Not a chance. You'll get 60 dollars a month—take it or leave it. If you want to go through with this, I'll be in court."

Mom's voice shot up, sharp with fury. "Keira, you really think you've outgrown me, don't you? I worked myself to the bone raising you, kept food on the table and a roof over your head so you could get through school, and this is how you repay me?"

Years of buried resentment churned inside me, and I fired back, "Why don't you ask yourself who all that food and comfort actually went to?"

The other end went silent. Then came an eruption even louder than before. "You ungrateful wretch! I raised both of you on my own! You think that was easy? And now you have the nerve to talk back to me?"

"Save it," I cut her off, my voice still steady. "You want to take me to court? Go ahead. I'll be right there."

"Fine. Alright!" Mom let out a cold laugh, her tone turning venomous.

"Keira, let me tell you something. This lawsuit is going to humiliate you, not me. You work in the city now. Imagine all your coworkers and friends finding out you're the kind of daughter who mistreats her own mother. Let's see how you show your face after that."

I almost smiled. "I don't care."

I hung up before she could get another word in.

The quiet didn't last. My phone started buzzing with a stream of texts from my brother, Troy Hadley.

"Hey, Keira, I saw these new sneakers I want. They're 2,000 dollars. Mom said you've got money now that you're working and told me to ask you. Send it over."

I stared at the screen and almost laughed at the sheer nerve. I typed back, "I'm not your ATM. If you want shoes, earn the money yourself. You graduated from trade school years ago, and you're still lounging around the house mooching off everyone else. Have you got no shame?"

A few seconds later, Troy fired back.

"Fine, don't then. You think you're hot shit because you went to college? Don't you dare lecture me. No wonder Mom's suing you. You're nothing but a selfish brat who doesn't give a damn about her own family."

I let out a bitter laugh, my finger hovering over the screen as fragments of the past flickered through my mind.

When I was little, Mom always saved the best food for Troy. I'd scrape together two weeks' worth of pocket money, and she'd force me to hand it all over so she could buy him snacks and toys.

The climate in the south was warm year-round, the streets lined with lush greenery and flowers tucked into every corner. The evening breeze was gentle and soothing, and even the air carried the fresh scent of grass and trees.I rented a small studio apartment with beautiful natural light. It wasn't big, but it was clean and cozy, simply furnished, and every inch of it was mine. I added a soft rug and a few houseplants and turned the little space into my own personal sanctuary.I polished up my résumé and started applying, and between my solid skills and my work experience, I landed a position at a new company without much trouble. My new coworkers were warm and easygoing. Nobody pried into my past or made assumptions about me. The pace was manageable, and I never had to pull another endless overtime shift. In my free time, I'd take evening walks and explore the local food scene. I bought myself nice clothes and pretty jewelry, tried all the meals I'd never let myself afford before,

Mom rushed to the window with red-rimmed eyes, shoved open the old glass pane, and leaned her body halfway out. Cold air poured into the room, sending the curtains whipping wildly."So this is how it is? You're really going to push me this far?" Her voice was hoarse, teetering on the edge of hysteria."I spent my whole life raising you, and this is what I get. Hounded over pocket change! You won't budge an inch, and you'd rather drive this whole family into the ground? If you're going to be this heartless, then what's the point of me being alive?"Troy, still slumped on the couch playing his game, barely glanced up before looking back down at his screen. He was completely indifferent, as if the woman losing her mind by the window wasn't his own mother.I watched her theatrical display of desperation, and the very last trace of softness inside me vanished.I didn't panic or rush over. I just stood where I was and watched her, perfectly still.Neighbors heard the commotion and came

Mom nodded hurriedly. "I know. I'll give it all back. I promise."I looked at Troy, who had been keeping his head down and his mouth shut the entire time. "Troy, you're 22 years old. You're not a kid anymore. You graduated from trade school, and you're healthy. There's nothing stopping you. You need to get out there, find a job, and start supporting yourself."Troy pressed his lips together, his face full of reluctance, but he didn't dare argue.I turned back to Mom. "Mom, I'll send you 1,000 dollars a month, and not a cent more."You're healthy and perfectly capable of working, so you can earn your own living. From now on, don't show up uninvited in my life. Don't come to my city, don't come to where I live, and don't cause a scene."Mom opened her mouth, wanting to protest, but she didn't have the nerve. She swallowed it down and gave a stiff nod. "Fine.""One more thing." My gaze was steady, and my tone left nothing open for debate."From this point forward, I'm done involvin

Mom was sitting nearby snacking on chips, crumbs scattered all over the floor around her.I walked over to Troy, my voice ice cold. "Did you take my bank card and transfer money out of my account? And did you take my gold necklace?"Troy's body went rigid for a second. Then, he looked up, his expression brazen and dismissive. "Yeah, so what?"There wasn't a shred of guilt in him. If anything, he acted like he was entitled to it."I wanted a new pair of earbuds, and I didn't have the cash, so I used your card to move some money over. And I took the necklace to a pawn shop and got 1,500 dollars for it. You've got money. What's the big deal if I borrow a little?""Borrow?" I stared him down, my eyes turning to ice."You took my things without permission. That's not borrowing. That's stealing."Mom immediately set down her bag of chips and stepped in front of Troy. Her brows furrowed as she scolded me, "Do you have to be so dramatic about it? We're family. Taking a little money from

I leaned against the doorframe and looked at Mom and Troy coldly. "I quit my job. I don't have a paycheck, and what little savings I have isn't enough to cover my own expenses. But since you're both so convinced I'm loaded, I'll just move back home. I've got nothing else going on anyway."Mom blinked, caught off guard. She clearly hadn't expected me to volunteer to come back. Then, a calculating glint passed through her eyes, and she nodded immediately."Sure! Come back home. You can help out around the house and look after your brother while you're at it."She was certain I was just being stubborn and that once I was back under her roof and under her thumb, I'd eventually cave and hand over the money. I didn't say another word. I packed my things and followed them back to that suffocating house. The moment I stepped through the door, the familiar weight of the place settled over me. The house was a mess, with snack wrappers littering the floor and cigarette ash and fruit peels sca

I looked at her and slowly shook my head. "Mom, you know exactly how to play favorites. You just never loved me."The words fell softly, but they hit her like a sledgehammer. Her eyes widened, and her mouth opened, but she couldn't form a single rebuttal.I didn't bother looking at her face anymore. I turned and flagged down a passing taxi, opened the door, and got in. As I pulled the door shut, I heard her cursing at me from behind, shrill and furious, but all I felt was calm.I gave the driver the hotel address, and the car pulled away, leaving her ugly snarling and every rotten memory behind me.Back at the hotel, I let my guard drop completely and collapsed onto the soft bed. The sky outside was overcast, and the evening breeze pushed the curtains in with a trace of coolness.I didn't cry. I wasn't sad. All I felt was the quiet relief of something finally being settled. This case was mine to win, and I knew it.…Three days later, Mitchell texted me to let me know that Mom
