Chapter 3

Autor: Milkfoam Bandit
Dawn was going to break on the horizon soon.

Worried that Mom would discover I had snuck out of the apartment, I had no choice but to return home.

I had just sunk to my knees when Mom woke up, her complexion sallow. She approached me and stared unblinkingly at me.

I didn't dare move a muscle. A minute passed before she slowly said, "You really deserved to die."

My heart twisted as a wave of regret churned in my heart.

"Mom…"

Mom shrieked and began raining blows down on my head. Every word that she screamed was dripping with despair.

"Don't call me that! I'm not your mother! You're a jinx! Cam wouldn't have gotten into trouble if it weren't for you! Grovel for his forgiveness right now! I want you to show him how remorseful you are every second and minute of the day!"

Cameron's disappearance had deeply upset her. I could even see new white hairs growing on her head. To comfort her, I began knocking my forehead against the floor with all my might.

"I'm sorry! I'm so sorry, Cam. It's all my fault."

Mom calmed down a little when she saw me groveling for forgiveness. Then she stood up and made her way into the kitchen.

I assumed that she was going to prepare breakfast. Instead, she pulled out a big bag of herbs and began simmering them in a pot.

It didn't take long for the pungent scent of herbs to permeate the apartment. Mom then carried the pot of herbs into the bathroom. There were faint sounds of running water, and a few seconds later, I heard Mom's voice, as if she were talking to someone.

"I had to scour the entire city before I managed to get my hands on these herbs. It helps with restoring the body. Be good and behave yourself. You'll be all better once you soak in this herbal bath.

"She's still kneeling. She even groveled for your forgiveness too. Has your anger subsided? If you're still mad, I can ask her to knock her forehead against the floor again…"

Mom's words sounded absolutely bizarre, making a chill run down my spine. I moved my feet slowly, wanting to see who she was talking to.

I was just about to get up when the bathroom door suddenly swung open, making me immediately fall to my knees again.

Mom swept her icy gaze over me. Her tone was edged with warning when she snapped, "You're only allowed to kneel in the living room for the next few days. You're forbidden from going anywhere else. That includes the bathroom!"

I was too scared to make a retort and could only nod in a daze.

"Mom…" I called out.

Mom turned to look at me seconds before she left.

I hesitated for a moment before deciding to tell her the truth.

"I saw Cam's corpse on Unit 301's balcony. I tried looking for it, but the woman hid his corpse."

"What?"

Mom was briefly stunned before an eerie smile stretched across her lips. "Your eyes must have been playing tricks on you," she said calmly.

I assumed that she didn't believe me. Unable to help myself, I raised my voice and said, "It's true. I saw Cam. I think he died after falling from the balcony."

Mom kicked me right after the words left my lips, causing my head to smash against the floor. She then straddled me and began raining her fists down on my face.

"Cam's not dead! Why are you cursing him?"

I tried to reason with her in the beginning, but I had no choice but to concede after my consciousness began to fade from her relentless blows.

"I'm sorry, Mom! My eyes must have been playing tricks on me. I shouldn't have cursed Cam."

Mom slapped me one last time before moving her lips to my ear and hissing, "Cam will come back after you kneel for seven days."

She then dragged me up like a half-dead dog and forced me to kneel in front of Cameron's portrait.

For the next five days, Mom would diligently prepare a pot of herbal medicine and carry it into the bathroom. She would then start up a strange conversation with whoever was inside.

"She's still kneeling. She didn't admit her mistakes at first, but she changed her tune after I disciplined her. Only two more days to go. You'll be able to come back in two more days."

The snatches of conversation I managed to overhear helped me piece together the bigger picture. It seemed that Mom was talking to Cameron!

I also smelled a faint stench in the air over the past few days, similar to the scent wafting in through the window.

A chilling idea floated to the forefront of my thoughts. To confirm my suspicions, I waited until Mom returned to her room before sneaking to the bathroom.

I froze in place when I pushed the door open.

Cameron, who had been missing for days, was lying in the bathtub!

The neighbors called the police a week later, as a foul stench was coming from Unit 1801. They were completely ignored when they tried knocking on the door. The crowd was shocked when the police forced the door open.Mom was sitting in the living room in a daze, looking filthy and disheveled. Her hands had already rotted and were crawling with maggots. She kneeled in front of my corpse as she mumbled to herself.Everyone had to move closer to her to hear what she was saying."I'm sorry. I made a mistake. I shouldn't have forced you to kneel for seven days and seven nights. I'll make it up to you right now. I'll kneel for seven days and seven nights too. Can you visit me again, Cassie? I miss you so much…"Mom's lips were peeling and bloodless. She was thin and frail, and her cheeks were so sunken that she looked as if she were just skin and bones. The police swallowed and asked, "Are you alright, ma'am?"Mom didn't move a muscle or respond. She just kept repeating the same words

When Mom refused to believe him, Mr. Wellstone sighed and pointed at my corpse, saying, "Logically speaking, your daughter's corpse should have vanished when her soul scattered. Look at it. It's still here. On top of that, the livor mortis stopped spreading. That's because she became a vengeful spirit."He asked Mom to bring him a pail of water when she still didn't believe him. "You'll understand what I'm talking about after you watch this."Mr. Wellstone dropped a burning talisman into the water. A scene slowly appeared in the water after the talisman burned to ashes. In the scene, Mom was reminding me to take good care of Cameron.Mom stared unblinkingly at the water as she stood to the side. She watched as I played with Cameron after she left and saw how he had a sudden asthma attack. To grab the bottle of medicine, I accidentally toppled off the balcony and fell to my death. Meanwhile, Cameron crawled toward the bedroom to grab his phone.Mr. Wellstone sighed as he smoothed

A spark of hope bloomed within me when I heard Mr. Wellstone's words. I didn't care about whether I was going to disappear. I just wanted Mom to know that I wasn't the one who caused Cameron's death.I hoped that Mom would stop, but instead the oil in the pot began to boil more vigorously.Mom was still adding logs into the fire, looking as if she had lost her mind. "I can't stop, Mr. Wellstone. You're the one who told me that the fire needs to be hot enough to melt her soul. We can't stop now and let our efforts go to waste."She then turned to look at Cameron. The livor mortis spots on his body had increased in number. "No… I have to add more logs. Cam won't be able to hold on for much longer," she mumbled. The oil boiled even hotter as the flames burned even brighter."Mom…" I mustered the last of my strength and called out to her before I melted into a puddle.Mom was incredibly excited when she saw my melted soul floating on the surface of the oil. "We did it! We really di

The room fell silent the moment the words left Mr. Wellstone's lips.In the next second, Mom suddenly sank to her knees and began groveling at my feet. "I'm begging you, Cassandra. You're already dead, so please give your blessings to Cam. He wouldn't have died if not for you."You only need to be fried in oil for seven hours. Think about how much pain Cam must have been in when he was dying. He didn't have his medication, and you weren't by his side. He must have been drowning in despair."Mom began to cry and pray as if she had lost her mind.Meanwhile, I felt as if she had thrown my heart into the pan of oil to be repeatedly fried. "Do you still love me, Mom?" I asked. She didn't hesitate for even a second before she answered, "I love you. I love you so much. But…"She suddenly changed her tone before continuing, "How am I going to live without you or Cam? At least one of you has to stay with me. "You can't be so selfish, Cassandra. Don't blame me for not wanting to bring yo

"You must have a way, Mr. Wellstone," Mom said. "I'm begging you. Please save Cam. I'm willing to pay any price."The shaman, Daniel Wellstone, smoothed down his beard. A hint of reluctance flickered in his eyes when he looked at me."I do have a way, but your daughter will have to suffer a little," he said."So what if she has to suffer?" Mom retorted. "I've never let her experience any hardship since she was a child. All her suffering will be worth it if she can save her brother."She ran over to me with an excited expression. "Didn't you say that you were willing to do anything to make me happy, Cassandra? Are you willing to endure a bit of suffering for Cam's sake?"I frowned, not understanding what was going on. "What's happening, Mom?" I asked.Perhaps feeling worried that I wouldn't agree to her request, Mom decided to tell me the truth. It turned out I thought I had slipped and fainted on the stairs because my memory was damaged—due to my unstable spirit. The truth was,

My first reaction was to feel happy. Perhaps Mom would stop blaming me once she found out that I was dead. Ignoring my current state, I rushed out of the room and shouted, "Mom, look! I'm already dead too. My corpse is under the bed."Mom was carrying Cameron's corpse back to his room at that moment. She scoffed when she heard my words. She tucked the blankets securely around his corpse before slowly turning to look at me, saying, "I know. I was the one who put you under the bed."My smile stiffened. I didn't understand her words. I repeated myself, saying, "I'm dead too, Mom—""I know!" Mom snapped as she leaped to her feet and shot a vicious glare at me. "I was the one who personally retrieved your corpse from Unit 301. I was the one who intentionally stuffed it under the bed!"My eyes widened as my thoughts turned into a chaotic mess.Mom rushed to my room and dragged my corpse out from under the bed. She pointed at my deformed face and said, "I left you and Cam at home whe
