Chapter 2

Autor: Milkfoam Bandit
A chill ran down my spine. Subconsciously, my first thought was whether Mom was going to beat me to death when she found out that Cameron was dead.

I trembled violently, then scrambled up to my feet before sneaking downstairs. I had to look for my neighbor. I had to take Cameron's corpse back home first before doing anything else.

My home was on the 18th floor. I knocked on Unit 301's door after I reached the third floor.

A few moments later, a faint rustling sound came from beyond the door. There was someone inside!

I knocked twice on the door again.

I could tell that the person inside the apartment was already at the door. I pressed myself against the peephole and tried to peer inside.

There was a woman standing behind the door, shaking like a leaf. However, it didn't look like she was going to open the door.

"Good evening, ma'am. I'm Cassandra Joyner from Unit 1801. I'm looking for my brother."

The woman started trembling even more violently upon hearing my words. She bit her lip harshly and silently tightened her grip around the baseball bat that she was clutching.

"I don't mean any harm, ma'am. I'm just trying to find my brother," I said.

"Your brother isn't here. I already told you to leave us alone. Don't think that you can scare me by pretending to be your daughter!"

I frowned, unable to understand her strange words.

"I'm not going to harm you, ma'am. I saw my brother on your balcony. Can you please let me in?"

"Get lost! Get out of my sight right now!" the woman suddenly screamed, her emotions rising rapidly. "You've already tormented me for so long. I can't even get a good night's rest anymore. What more do you want from me?

"My family is also being bombarded by tragedies. What gives you the right to pin the blame on us? Why would you try to prank us this way? I'm going to call the police if you come again!"

She then covered her ears with her hands and rushed into her room.

The apartment remained silent when I knocked again. I hadn't understood a single word that she said.

Suddenly, an idea floated to the forefront of my thoughts—perhaps the woman was linked to Cameron's death!

I didn't dare knock again. When I returned home, I stuck my head out of the window again, only to realize that Cameron's corpse was gone!

The woman must have hidden his corpse.

Panic gripped my heart as I paced circles around the room. I steeled my nerves after mulling over my thoughts, deciding to crawl out of the window.

A thick pipe connected all the apartments, and I could use it to crawl down to the woman's balcony. As long as I managed to get my hands on Cameron's corpse, it would be pointless for the woman to deny that she had him.

I carefully stuck my foot out of the window and crawled down the pipe like a cat. Surprisingly, the process went smoothly, and I reached the balcony in record time.

The woman didn't lock her balcony. I quietly slid the glass door open and entered the apartment, which was decorated in almost the same fashion as mine.

I swiftly searched every nook and cranny, but I couldn't find Cameron's corpse at all.

I was stewing in my confusion when a clattering noise resounded from the bedroom. I padded in the direction of the noise and saw the woman curled up at the end of her bed. Her hands were pressed to her ears as she muttered to herself.

"It wasn't my fault. Leave me alone. You're the one who didn't watch over them properly. Get out! Get out of my sight!"

The woman seemed to be mentally unstable. She didn't even notice me when I was standing at her door.

I searched the apartment again, but Cameron's corpse had disappeared into thin air. The strange smell from before had also vanished.

Did the woman hide Cameron's corpse? Or did she move it somewhere else?

The neighbors called the police a week later, as a foul stench was coming from Unit 1801. They were completely ignored when they tried knocking on the door. The crowd was shocked when the police forced the door open.Mom was sitting in the living room in a daze, looking filthy and disheveled. Her hands had already rotted and were crawling with maggots. She kneeled in front of my corpse as she mumbled to herself.Everyone had to move closer to her to hear what she was saying."I'm sorry. I made a mistake. I shouldn't have forced you to kneel for seven days and seven nights. I'll make it up to you right now. I'll kneel for seven days and seven nights too. Can you visit me again, Cassie? I miss you so much…"Mom's lips were peeling and bloodless. She was thin and frail, and her cheeks were so sunken that she looked as if she were just skin and bones. The police swallowed and asked, "Are you alright, ma'am?"Mom didn't move a muscle or respond. She just kept repeating the same words

When Mom refused to believe him, Mr. Wellstone sighed and pointed at my corpse, saying, "Logically speaking, your daughter's corpse should have vanished when her soul scattered. Look at it. It's still here. On top of that, the livor mortis stopped spreading. That's because she became a vengeful spirit."He asked Mom to bring him a pail of water when she still didn't believe him. "You'll understand what I'm talking about after you watch this."Mr. Wellstone dropped a burning talisman into the water. A scene slowly appeared in the water after the talisman burned to ashes. In the scene, Mom was reminding me to take good care of Cameron.Mom stared unblinkingly at the water as she stood to the side. She watched as I played with Cameron after she left and saw how he had a sudden asthma attack. To grab the bottle of medicine, I accidentally toppled off the balcony and fell to my death. Meanwhile, Cameron crawled toward the bedroom to grab his phone.Mr. Wellstone sighed as he smoothed

A spark of hope bloomed within me when I heard Mr. Wellstone's words. I didn't care about whether I was going to disappear. I just wanted Mom to know that I wasn't the one who caused Cameron's death.I hoped that Mom would stop, but instead the oil in the pot began to boil more vigorously.Mom was still adding logs into the fire, looking as if she had lost her mind. "I can't stop, Mr. Wellstone. You're the one who told me that the fire needs to be hot enough to melt her soul. We can't stop now and let our efforts go to waste."She then turned to look at Cameron. The livor mortis spots on his body had increased in number. "No… I have to add more logs. Cam won't be able to hold on for much longer," she mumbled. The oil boiled even hotter as the flames burned even brighter."Mom…" I mustered the last of my strength and called out to her before I melted into a puddle.Mom was incredibly excited when she saw my melted soul floating on the surface of the oil. "We did it! We really di

The room fell silent the moment the words left Mr. Wellstone's lips.In the next second, Mom suddenly sank to her knees and began groveling at my feet. "I'm begging you, Cassandra. You're already dead, so please give your blessings to Cam. He wouldn't have died if not for you."You only need to be fried in oil for seven hours. Think about how much pain Cam must have been in when he was dying. He didn't have his medication, and you weren't by his side. He must have been drowning in despair."Mom began to cry and pray as if she had lost her mind.Meanwhile, I felt as if she had thrown my heart into the pan of oil to be repeatedly fried. "Do you still love me, Mom?" I asked. She didn't hesitate for even a second before she answered, "I love you. I love you so much. But…"She suddenly changed her tone before continuing, "How am I going to live without you or Cam? At least one of you has to stay with me. "You can't be so selfish, Cassandra. Don't blame me for not wanting to bring yo

"You must have a way, Mr. Wellstone," Mom said. "I'm begging you. Please save Cam. I'm willing to pay any price."The shaman, Daniel Wellstone, smoothed down his beard. A hint of reluctance flickered in his eyes when he looked at me."I do have a way, but your daughter will have to suffer a little," he said."So what if she has to suffer?" Mom retorted. "I've never let her experience any hardship since she was a child. All her suffering will be worth it if she can save her brother."She ran over to me with an excited expression. "Didn't you say that you were willing to do anything to make me happy, Cassandra? Are you willing to endure a bit of suffering for Cam's sake?"I frowned, not understanding what was going on. "What's happening, Mom?" I asked.Perhaps feeling worried that I wouldn't agree to her request, Mom decided to tell me the truth. It turned out I thought I had slipped and fainted on the stairs because my memory was damaged—due to my unstable spirit. The truth was,

My first reaction was to feel happy. Perhaps Mom would stop blaming me once she found out that I was dead. Ignoring my current state, I rushed out of the room and shouted, "Mom, look! I'm already dead too. My corpse is under the bed."Mom was carrying Cameron's corpse back to his room at that moment. She scoffed when she heard my words. She tucked the blankets securely around his corpse before slowly turning to look at me, saying, "I know. I was the one who put you under the bed."My smile stiffened. I didn't understand her words. I repeated myself, saying, "I'm dead too, Mom—""I know!" Mom snapped as she leaped to her feet and shot a vicious glare at me. "I was the one who personally retrieved your corpse from Unit 301. I was the one who intentionally stuffed it under the bed!"My eyes widened as my thoughts turned into a chaotic mess.Mom rushed to my room and dragged my corpse out from under the bed. She pointed at my deformed face and said, "I left you and Cam at home whe
