Chapter 2

Author: Goodtale
The first-floor lobby was already crowded.

Cameron had placed my suitcase beside a long table.

Preston stood next to him holding an inventory sheet.

"Everyone cooperate."

His voice carried across the lobby.

"We're cataloging property connected to a suspected theft."

Students stopped walking.

Several pulled out their phones to record.

Preston unzipped my suitcase.

"If you're innocent, Caleb, you shouldn't mind everyone seeing what's inside."

I didn't stop him.

He reached to the bottom and pulled out a black garment bag.

When he unzipped it, a men's formal suit appeared.

The deep navy jacket was covered with subtle hand embroidery along the collar and cuffs.

Someone recognized the designer.

"Doesn't that house only do bespoke?"

"One suit can cost more than a car."

Preston lifted it and stared at me.

"Where did you get this?"

"Nathaniel lent it to me."

He laughed.

"He lent it to you? Prove it."

"Wait until he gets back and ask him."

"Until then, this belongs to Nathaniel. I'm holding it for him."

He grabbed the jacket and yanked.

The embroidery snagged against the edge of the table.

A faint ripping sound cut through the lobby.

I stood.

"Stop pulling.

"If you damage it, you can't afford the repair."

Preston paused.

Then his expression twisted.

"Borrow one expensive suit and suddenly you think you're a trust-fund prince?"

He pulled harder.

The jacket came free from the garment bag and dropped partly onto the floor.

Dust streaked the hem.

I looked at Cameron.

"He's damaging property. You're not doing anything?"

Cameron avoided my eyes.

"Finish the inventory first."

Preston handed the suit to one of the student representatives.

"Log it for return to Nathaniel."

Then he searched the suitcase again.

This time, he found my laptop.

Silver-gray, with a tiny cat sticker on the lid.

Preston held it up.

"Top-spec gaming laptop."

He looked at the people around us.

"Someone who survives by freeloading can afford this?"

"It's mine."

Laughter exploded around the lobby.

One student even slapped his friend on the shoulder.

"He says it's his."

Preston handed the laptop to Cameron.

"Log it as suspected stolen property."

I stepped closer.

"My files are on that computer.

"Go ahead and request access if you want to check."

"Why would I believe you?"

He turned the laptop over several times.

"You probably sold Nathaniel's stuff to buy this."

Then he pulled a clear document sleeve from the side compartment.

Inside was an invitation to the university's opening ceremony VIP lounge.

The invitation carried both the university seal and the Whitlock Group logo.

A VIP room number was printed in the corner.

Preston read it.

Then laughed.

"VIP lounge?

"You?"

I reached for it.

"That's my invitation."

"Obviously fake. Were you planning to sneak into the VIP area so you could pretend to have status?"

Before I could take it back, he tore the invitation in half.

Then again, into four pieces.

They fell into the trash.

The lobby went quiet.

I stared at the bin and memorized exactly where the pieces landed.

Preston clapped his hands once.

"Inventory complete.

"Caleb, leave the residence hall immediately."

I stood and faced him.

"The embroidery on that suit can't be folded.

"Don't knock the laptop around.

"And the invitation was issued by the university. You should preserve all of it properly."

Preston lifted his chin.

"Stop trying to scare people.

"Tomorrow at the opening ceremony, I'll personally hand all of this to Nathaniel.

"Then he can see what kind of person he's been supporting."

Cameron lifted my suitcase.

Preston carried the suit and black card.

They headed toward the Student Council office.

Ms. Keller escorted me outside.

So I stood on the front steps with no phone, no identification, and no house key.

Preston said he planned to return everything to Nathaniel tomorrow so he could claim credit.

What he apparently didn't know was that Nathaniel would be sitting in the VIP lounge at tomorrow's opening ceremony.

And so would his parents.

After the scandal ended, I moved back into the dorm.My old bed was still there.Preston's belongings were gone.Only strips of tape residue remained on his desk. Our new roommate, Tyler Brooks, stood the moment I walked in."Caleb, do you want the bed by the window or the one by the door?""My own bed."He immediately began moving things away from my desk."I already cleaned this area."I watched him fussing around."You don't have to move anything."I'm just here for a charger."He stopped. Our other roommate, Jake Morrison, handed me a bottle of water."Is your hand still injured?"Has the university compensated you yet?""It's in process.""Do you need us to testify?"I shook my head. There was already more than enough evidence. What I wasn't used to was the way people looked at me in the hallway.Students who had called me a gold digger now changed direction when they saw me.Others whispered outside the door."That's Nathaniel Whitlock's little brother.""

The university called me into an emergency meeting the next morning.President Brennan sat at the head of the conference table.Dean Mercer, faculty representatives, student representatives, and several administrators sat along both sides. The manipulated video was already on the screen. The president opened with, "Online discussion is escalating."The university would like you to issue a statement first saying the video reflects a misunderstanding."I looked at him."And who caused the misunderstanding?"He ignored the question."The public narrative now says the Whitlock family is using influence against an ordinary student."If it continues, it damages the university."Preston is already in police custody."He cannot control what people are saying."I looked at the projected frame."Maybe he can't."His mother can."The posting account and a marketing account belonging to the Carver company have logged in from the same device."People around the table exchanged glan

The moment police arrived, Preston stopped crying. He grabbed his mother's arm."Mom, I didn't know he'd actually call them."I only wanted him to apologize."I looked at him."Is that what you were thinking when you locked me in the stairwell?"He met my eyes."I never meant to hurt you.""You just didn't care whether I got hurt."His face changed.Officers began cataloging the scene.I handed over the recorder first."This contains Preston and Cameron admitting that they took my belongings and prevented me from leaving."Then I collected the torn invitation pieces and placed them one by one into a clear evidence bag."Preston tore this up in front of witnesses."My laptop and luggage are still inside the Student Council office."Security footage will show Cameron taking them."Preston interrupted."Student Council was safeguarding those items."An officer looked at him."Do you have written authorization from the owner?"He went silent.Cameron was standing besi

The lounge door opened.A middle-aged woman in a beige suit strode inside with two assistants behind her.She didn't look at my parents. She went straight to Preston and pulled him to her side."Who bullied my son?"Preston lowered his head and started crying."Mom..."Preston's mother, Diane Carver, immediately looked at me.The back of my hand was still crusted with blood.Dust covered my clothes. The damaged suit was still on the table.Preston, meanwhile, looked immaculate. His hair wasn't even out of place. His mother had obviously heard only one version of the story. She pointed at me."You?"You've been bullying my Preston because you know Nathaniel?"I didn't get a chance to answer."A normal student spends every day eating other people's food and using other people's things, and that's not enough?"Now you're creating a scene in the VIP lounge?"Didn't your parents teach you any manners?"Nathaniel stepped forward."Ask your son who locked whom in a stair

Preston spoke first."Cameron put his hands on him."I only asked him to remove Caleb from the ceremony area."Cameron snapped back immediately."You told me to keep him locked up until the ceremony ended."You also told me to take his phone and luggage.""You took those on your own."Preston turned on him."You're on Student Council. Don't you know how to think before doing something?"Cameron laughed in disbelief."You came to me using the Whitlock name."I thought you had university authorization."And now all of this is my fault?"They turned on each other quickly.Preston claimed Cameron decided to lock the door.Cameron said Preston personally jammed the mop through the handle.Preston claimed he'd only waited outside.Cameron listed the things Preston had said while I was trapped inside.Dad let them finish. Then he asked one question."My son came here to experience ordinary student life."Who authorized either of you to use Student Council authority to pun

Preston froze.Nathaniel was already moving. He crossed the room and slapped him.The sound cracked through the lounge.Preston's knees gave out and he dropped to the floor. His expression went from smug to blank. He clearly couldn't understand why the Whitlock heir he'd been trying so hard to impress had just hit him over a "freeloader."Nathaniel pointed at him."Take a good look."Caleb is my brother."Same mother, same father."He's the Whitlocks' other son."Preston grabbed the edge of the table and struggled up."Nathaniel... are you sure?"You two don't even have the same last name."Mom picked up the black card."He has my last name."Is that a problem?"Preston's mouth opened."But he always looks so...""So poor?" Nathaniel cut in."How my brother chooses to live is none of your business."Preston started waving his hands."I didn't mean anything bad."I found your card with him. I was only trying to get it back for you."I walked to the table and too
