Maya

“Valeria, how will I know which one is Kingston?” I asked as she used a yarn to tie Kai’s oversized trousers around my waist.

“You will know him when you see him. Someone like that would look exactly like the kind of job he does,” she said, tying the knot and tugging the tunic down to cover her work.

My small breasts had been flattened against my chest with linen wrappings, and my long black hair had been braided and wrapped around my scalp before being stuffed under a top hat. Valeria had used a bit of coal to darken and thicken my eyebrows, and to dirty my jawline, so that in the dim lighting it would look like I had a beard. To complete my disguise, I had also stolen the pack clerk’s spectacles. I put them on my nose and checked my reflection in the lengthened wall mirror.

“What do you think?”

Maggie shook her head. “I don’t know Maya, but you look too petite and attractive to pass as a man.”

“You have forgotten that men come in different looks, shapes, and sizes,” I said, “Take Kai as an example, he’s just a few inches taller than me.”

“Absolutely, but he's way fatter than you.” Valeria grabbed my shoulder and squeezed me hard against her chest. “Remember to mask your voice.”

I clung to her for a moment. “Aren't you going to talk me out of this dangerous move? Won’t you stop me?”

She stroked my back with her hand, “It is too dangerous and I equally know that it is pointless trying to stop Maya Russell, you never listen. Besides,” she drew a breath and straightened, releasing me from her fierce hug. “Going there can’t be worse than being married off to that unliving monster.”

I adjusted the cap in a way that hid my eyes. “Thanks for the reminder,” I muttered.

I drew a deep breath and stepped out of the dark alley and into the street in front of Grim Goblin Inn. Dim disco lights and music emitted from its open window, along with the stench of beer, tobacco and roasted meat, beckoning to travelers to come and seek shelter in the weather-beaten building that looked as though it would crumble at any moment.

“Wait!” Valeria called, grabbing my hand and pulling me back gently. She pulled out a small golden vial from her pocket. “I stole the cloaking scent portion from the pack physician.” She opened the cover and poured a large portion of the strong-smelling liquid into her hands then she started rubbing her hands all over my face, neck, and clothes. She even lifted my arms one after the other and applied a generous amount under my armpit.

The sweet herbal scents burned into my nostrils immediately cloaking my scent and the lingering scent from Kai’s clothes.

I kissed her on the forehead, “You are a brainiac, my precious Valeria. Now wish me luck and pray for the Moon Goddess's protection. And if anything happens to me, don’t panic or be sad. Just try to live a happy and fulfilled life.”

“Don’t speak like that you duckling!” She sobbed and gave me a shove towards the door. “Go find that rogue. This is going to work!” she lowered her voice and whispered, “You will return to me, duckling.” She twisted her hands on her apron and moved into the gloom again. “Go kick some ass, I’ll be waiting here.”

I walked down to the Inn, this time I made it to the door and stepped over the foyer. Dirty-looking men were sitting around rough wooden tables. A trio of musicians was set up in a corner, and a few boozers were dancing to the tune. The only women inside the inn were the barmaids and a few scantily clad prostitutes who had wrapped themselves around their potential customers.

No one paid any attention to me and I was once grateful for my invincible techniques. I slipped between the tables, surveying the room for the mercenary.

Valeria had said I would know him once I set my eyes on him, and she was right. I was sure I had found my target, the moment my eyes fell on the huge scary figure of a man sitting alone in a dimly lit, shadowy corner. I straightened my shoulders and moved purposefully toward the table. When I was a few feet away from the table, I stopped feeling a strange heaviness in my chest, like someone was crushing my windpipe and making it difficult for me to breathe.

“Well, boy? Are you going to spend the whole night gawking or are you not here for business?”

He didn’t sound like I had expected a rogue hireling to sound. Instead, his voice was deep and velvety, soft and soothing like a melody that eased every worry. It was completely weird judging by his appearance. He wore an all-black outfit, an old faded black jacket over a tee. His long raven-black hair had hues of chestnut, and it was pulled back from his forehead. It was hard to make out his facial features in the dim light.

I staggered forward and grasped the chair that was still pushed up to the table across from him. “Are you—” I remembered immediately that I needed to conceal and deepen my voice. “Are you Mr Kingston?”

The man stared back at me, “Nobody calls me that title. I am just Tyler. Who’s asking?”

“I’m Theo. Theo Griffen.” I stretched out my hand, hoping he wouldn't pay attention to how tiny they are. He didn’t grasp my hand and after a moment, I dropped it back to my side. “May I sit?”

He picked up his stein of beer and inclined his head in what I took to be an approval. I pulled out the chair and quickly sat down before I lost my footing. “Let me get straight to the point Mr—uhm, Tyler. I am desperately in need of your services.”

I could see his brown orbs glistening in the lamplight. Although his expression remained as hard as granite, it seemed like his eyes were taunting me.

“And which of my services are you seeking?” He asked in a tone that rumbled like distant thunder, powerful yet strangely comforting.

I glanced around nervously to make sure no one was close enough to listen. But it almost seemed like the other customers in the inn were avoiding his corner. I leaned closer and lowered my voice, “I need you to abduct someone. Someone very dear to me”

TylerMy wolf had stopped speaking to me. That was new, because after seven years of constant internal commentary, restless, opinionated, occasionally useful, his silence felt almost louder than his voice. He had made his position clear and I had ignored him. So now he had withdrawn into dignified contempt. My wolf knew what Maya Russell was. He had known from the moment we took her from Sherwood Forest, perhaps even before he had properly seen her face. Ever since, he had been making his position clear with patient persistence. He knew he was right. And apparently, he was willing to wait for me to admit it. But I was not willing to agree with him.Rogues didn’t have mates. At least, that was what I had always believed.Separation from the pack severed that part of a wolf too. The bond went dormant or died altogether along with everything else that was lost when a wolf became a rogue. For seven years, I had felt no yearning for a mate. Seven years of moving from place to place, with no

  • Moon kissed, Blood crowned   Ch 42- The trail that led to her

KaiWe found the bear site mid-morning. You couldn’t miss it, because the trail told the whole story in mud and hoofprints. Two horses had been moving at a steady pace, and then everything had descended into chaos. The ground was churned up. There was a wide sliding mark where something large had gone sideways, and in the soft mud of the trail was a clear impression that stopped me cold. The shape of a person. Someone had landed on their back, arms flung wide and pressed into the muddy earth like an insignia stamped into papyrus.A woman’s figure. I crouched and took a quick sniff and it was Maya’s scent, not Valeria's. I stood over the impression for a long moment without saying anything.“The horse went over,” Finn said from behind me. He was reading the ground the way he read everything, quietly, methodically, without drama. “Reared and fell backward, from the look of it. Both riders went down.”“Both?” I asked.“Yes. Both.”Liam had wandered farther up the trail and came back pra

  • Moon kissed, Blood crowned   Ch 41- The past beneath his scars

TylerShe had been trying to hide it all afternoon. The shallow breathing and the way she held her left arm slightly away from her body. The careful stillness in the saddle that she maintained through sheer will for hours. Every time I glanced back, she met my eyes with that level stare that seemed to dare me to even suggest she couldn’t handle it.And I had let her handle it. Even though I felt a stab of guilt for pushing her.We needed the ground and we made good distance, better than I had expected. By the time the light began to fade, we found a campsite in a sheltered hollow. We had covered more ground than we had on any day since crossing the river.Valeria was asleep against the rock shelf within minutes of stopping. Maya, however, lowered herself carefully onto the ground beside the fire, her jaw set and her pale face telling me everything her mouth refused to say.“I need to check your ribs,” I said. “They might be broken.”“They’re fine,” she replied through clenched teeth

  • Moon kissed, Blood crowned   Ch 40- His instinct to protect

MayaThe thrill left me all at once, like a tide pulling back and taking everything with it. Suddenly, I became aware of three things. My ribs hurt with every breath I took, my ankle was badly sprained and I was absolutely covered in mud.The bear-induced silence settled over the trail, as Valeria carefully lowered herself onto a fallen log, one hand pressed against her hip as she took inventory of her own injuries. Her face remained composed, though the slight tightening around her eyes told me she was hurting more than she wanted to admit.“How bad?” I asked.“My hip is sore,” she said. “Bruised, I think. Nothing is broken.” Then she looked at me more carefully. “You’re muddled like a pig.”I glanced down at myself. “I’m fine.”“You told him that too,” she said dryly. “It wasn’t convincing then either.”I looked at my soiled dress and the mud was impressive. When Arion had gone over the soft ground, I had left almost a perfect imprint in it. The horse had taken most of the impact, sp

  • Moon kissed, Blood crowned   Ch 39- The wolf unleashed

TylerShe had been visiting Draken for months. I turned that thought over from every angle as I rode, searching for the part that didn’t sit right. There were too many parts. The fact that Draken could touch her in a dreamspace. The fact that she hadn’t pulled away. The fact that whatever hold he had over her there was strong enough that it had taken a wolf breaking through to shake it loose.Apparently, my wolf. I hadn’t confirmed it yet, but I knew my own wolf the way I knew my own hands. And with the description Maya had given me, enormous, nightshade, and furious, there was very little room for another interpretation. My wolf had entered a dreamspace I hadn’t even known existed. And he had put himself between Maya and Draken without asking my permission. Which was exactly the kind of thing my wolf would do. And exactly the kind of information I had absolutely no idea what to do with.My jaw tightened.Draken could touch her in that dream. What exactly did that mean? Had he hurt her

  • Moon kissed, Blood crowned   Ch 38- The wolf he recognized

MayaTyler was already awake when I opened my eyes. He sat beside the rebuilt fire with a cup of something hot between his hands, his elbows resting on his knees as he stared toward the horizon beyond the treetops.Morning had arrived beneath a grey sky. The clouds were bluish-grey, and the camp was quiet except for Valeria’s soft breathing beneath her cloak.I pushed myself upright, as Tyler looked at me and something shifted in his expression but not much. Just enough for me to notice.“You didn’t sleep well,” he said, it wasn’t a question.“No,” I admitted. He held out the cup, I took it carefully and sipped. It was bitter and minty, probably made from herbs he’d found near the spring. I wrapped both hands around the warmth and stared into the fire. I’d spent most of the night composing this conversation in my head. It hadn’t become easier with rehearsal. If anything, every version sounded worse.I finally looked at him. “I need to tell you something.”Tyler didn’t respond. He sim
