Nivia POV

The second morning on the island, I woke to find both Justin and Mateo already up, discussing plans for the day in low voices. They stopped when they saw me awake.

"Morning," Justin said, offering me a mango he'd found.

"Thanks." I took it gratefully. "What were you two plotting?"

"Not plotting," Mateo said. "Planning. We need to explore more, find better food sources."

"And we need weapons," Justin added. "Real weapons, not just sticks."

After eating, we set out together to explore a section of the island we hadn't seen yet. The jungle was denser here, darker despite the morning sun. Every shadow could hide danger.

"Stay between us," Justin instructed.

For once, I didn't argue about being protected. After yesterday's jaguar encounter, I knew how vulnerable we were.

We'd been walking for about an hour when we found them - a grove of fruit trees unlike anything we'd seen before. The fruits were large, purple, and smelled amazing.

"Think they're safe?" I asked.

Mateo POVJustin's fever broke on the third morning, thank God. He was weak but alive, the plant paste seemingly fighting off infection. But we were running low on water, and someone needed to fetch more from the stream."I'll go," Nivia offered."No," Justin said immediately, trying to sit up and wincing. "Too dangerous.""You can barely move," she pointed out. "And Mateo needs to stay here in case the jaguar comes back. I'll be quick."I didn't like it, but she was right. Justin couldn't travel, and someone needed to guard him."Take this," I said, handing her a sharpened stick we'd made. "And scream if anything happens. We'll hear you."She nodded, taking our makeshift water containers - hollowed-out gourds we'd found."Be careful," Justin said, worry clear in his voice."I will," she promised, then headed toward the stream.I watched her go, unease settling in my stomach. We shouldn't have let her go alone. But what choice did we have?"She'll be fine," Justin said, though he look

  • Moonchild; The Rise Of the Lycans   Chapter 90: First Day of Survival

Justin POVThe first night was rough. The shelter barely fit all three of us, and none of us slept well. Every sound from the jungle had us jerking awake - birds, insects, rustling leaves. Without our wolf hearing, we couldn't tell if the sounds were threatening or harmless. When dawn broke, we were exhausted but alive."We need to organize," I said as we sat outside the shelter. "Divide responsibilities.""Who made you leader?" Mateo asked, that familiar challenge in his voice."Someone needs to take charge," I shot back. "Unless you have a better idea?""Maybe we should vote," he suggested sarcastically."Seriously?" I stood up, frustration already building. "We're stranded on an island and you want to have a democracy debate?""I'm just saying you don't automatically get to—""Stop!" Nivia interrupted, standing between us. "This is exactly what we can't do. Fight over stupid things like who's in charge.""It's not stupid," Mateo said. "Leadership matters in survival situations.""T

Mateo POVSand. Again. But this time, when I woke up, I knew immediately something was different. The sand was coarser, darker. The air smelled different - salt and seaweed and something tropical. And the sound of waves was louder.I pushed myself up, spitting sand from my mouth. My whole body ached like I'd been thrown around in a giant tumble dryer. The sun above was just as bright as before, but it felt different. More real, somehow."Nivia?" I called, looking around frantically. She was lying a few feet away, face down in the sand. I scrambled over to her, gently turning her over."Nivia, wake up. Please wake up."Her eyelids fluttered, and she groaned. "Mateo?""Yeah, it's me. Are you hurt?"She sat up slowly, looking dazed. "I don't think so. Just feel like I got hit by a truck." She looked around, confusion growing on her face. "Are we... still on the island?""An island," I corrected. "But I don't think it's the same one.""What do you mean?"I helped her stand, then pointed t

Nivia POV"How is that possible?" I asked, standing up with Justin's help. "We were just in the science lab. On our school grounds. There's no ocean for thousands of miles.""Magic," Mateo said again. "Powerful magic. Something or someone must have brought us here.""Or we're dreaming," I suggested hopefully. "A shared dream or hallucination or something."Justin tried to shift, to call on his wolf. Nothing. The block was still there, maybe even stronger than before."Still can't shift," He reported."Same," Mateo confirmed. We stood there on the beach, three teenagers with no idea where we were or how we'd gotten there. The sun beat down mercilessly, and I could already feel my skin starting to burn."We need shade," Justin said, taking charge. "And some water. Thereafter, we can figure out what the hell is going on."I nodded. For once, Mateo agreed with him without argument. "The trees will have shade. Maybe we can find fresh water inland."I looked between them, then out at the en

Justin POVThe moment before the lights went out, I saw something that made my blood run cold. The door we'd come through - it was gone. Not closed, not locked. Gone. Where it had been was just a solid wall. Then darkness hit, complete and absolute."Nivia!" I called out, reaching for where she'd been standing."I'm here," her voice came from my right, shaky but close. I found her hand and pulled her against me."Mateo?" she called."Right here," his voice came from nearby. "The door—" "It's gone." I cut him off."What do you mean gone?" Nivia asked, her body trembling against mine."The wall," Mateo said. "It's solid. Like there was never a door there."I felt him moving closer, probably feeling along the wall. I kept one arm around Nivia while reaching out with my other hand. My fingers hit smooth, cold wall where I knew the door had been."That's not possible," Nivia whispered."Magic," Mateo said grimly. "Has to be. Someone spelled this room."The darkness was so thick it felt li
