Eve’s POV

Malik tucked his phone away, but the tension in his shoulders never eased. I watched him closely, memorizing the frown in his brow, the way his fingers tapped against his thigh unconsciously. He always did that when he was trying not to panic.

“Let’s get back,” Malik whispered as night slowly turned to day.”

I nodded, slipping my hand into his as I got up to walk back towards the quarters. His fingers tightened around mine and this had become more often than usual, like he feared I would disappear if he didn’t hold me so close to himself.

I pressed a hand against my chest, “I sense something.” He turned to look at me. “What’s that?”

“I feel like she’s trying to tell me something but I’m unable to hear the words, it’s all just noise like a door knocking from inside.”

Malik came closer. “Does it hurt?”

“No.”, I whispered. “It feels unsettling.”

He lifted a hand to my cheek. “When the time comes, you’ll hear her clearly.”

“This doesn’t seem like my first shift or anything

Eve’s POVNext on our list was a trip to see Malik’s mother because Malik felt she might know something. The journey here was scary, how does one even begin to explain to her. Malik’s hands held mine and squeezed lightly like he could read my thoughts. “We are okay.” He whispered softly. “Are you sure this is…right?” I asked quietly, “It’s the only lead we have.” He said. “I fee strongly that she would know something that may change the whole thing for us.” The house appeared ahead of us, as we got to the door. Malik knocked once and then again, the door opened to beautiful, her back though stiff and her stance rigid like she didn’t want us there, I knew this was such a bad idea. The air immediately became heavy with tension, I could feel every heartbeat in my chest sync with what I imagined to be the sound of pulse of tension in the house. Her voice cut through my thought like a blade. “What are you doing?”Malik stepped forward. “Hello to you too, mother.” He said pulling my ha

Eve’s POVMalik glanced back at me,“You feeling ready for this?” he asked.I swallowed, letting my wolf stretch beneath my skin, feeling its power hum in response to the energy in the forest. “I think I am,” I said slowly, my fingers brushing against the markings on my arm. “Eve…” Malik’s voice pulled me from whatever trance i was entering. “Something is near, stay close.” I tensed. The wolf in my flaring at the warning, my claws itched to strike, my teeth needed to defend, yet I forced myself to stay calm. Every heartbeat and pulse reminded me that I was way more than the Eve I was used to. The scent we were following grew stronger, it wasn’t magic, it was fear, not ours though but we could sense that as well, it was fear from a different place, tangled with layers of manipulation. I thought to myself, what if all the times I felt we were being watched by the forest, it wasn’t actually the forest but we were being watched or followed“Here,” Malik whispered pausing by a tree. I kn

Eve’s POV“Tell me,” I said my voice shaking slightly as I spoke. “Did I bring the curse to Blackthorn?” I asked before the full break of dawn, it was the one question that had burned all night in my mind, the thought that the same curse we spent all the time seeking to end. I was responsible. Kimani was like a ghost, he never slept so I wasn’t surprised when I heard his voice again. “The curse was never gone, it was here long before the war of Harttman and Blackthorn, but we all believed the curse died with the Harttman pack, in truth, it should not be awake, it didnt just wake, something must have triggered it and I doubt your resurfacing did, something else did this.” He nodded slowly as though in a conversation with those we weren’t seeing. “You see, the witch influence was never purged, it stayed hidden, it slept. Events were being manipulated from the darkness ensuring that fear, greed and anger had a room to thrive. This was a quest for revenge.”“Revenge?” I asked my stomach

Eve’s POVMorning arrived softly, the sun spilling golden light through the cracks in the man’s hut, he who later revealed himself to be Kimani{Kee-ma-nee}. I tossed and turned uncomfortably whilst trying to not wake Malik or Dorian, but they were already up, sitting quietly by the corner.I took a slow breath, trying to calm the storm brewing inside of me. I felt comfortable at this part of the forest, it felt the way it was always supposed to feel, peaceful and calm. I feared that I may find out more that would change everything for me in this place and all I would have to myself would be the same calm from the forest. Kimani moved behind his thin curtain, his old frame moving with surprising agility. “Eve,” he said softly, “it is time you understood why you are here, why you exist, sit.” His eyes stayed glued on mine.I obeyed, letting myself sink onto the worn mat in front of him. Malik leaned close, resting a hand lightly on my arm, grounding me, while Dorian stood stiffly, arms

Eve’s POV Malik walked closed to me, his fingers occasionally touching mine, it was a subtle but constant reassurance. Dorian moved ahead as usual, his gaze steady, I followed both their footsteps, “I don’t like this at all,” I whispered, keeping my voice low. “Don’t you both feel watched?”Dorian’s eyes flickered to mine. “Tonight we are seeking something deeper than the eyes of the forest. Focus wolfie.” Wolfie? I truly am wolf but why did it sound so rude and dismissive, we’ll have this conversation when I’m ready.I nodded, my gaze swept across the whole place, I felt my wolf stir in anticipation of what laid ahead. Every step I took felt heavy, and I knew it was only because we were slowly closing in on answers I wasn’t sure I was ready to face just yet. Hours had passed since we had been on this journey to where we were told the hermit lived. The forest had begun to thin on us. The trees still looked tw is Ted and their roots clawed at the ground like folded fingers.” At las

Eve’s POV The night felt overly calm, the low glow of my mark still pulsed on my arms, I was still restless inside, it wasn’t just my wolf anymore, I could feel every thing sharper and deeper, the more I tried to brush the feeling away, the further it dug at memories I did not even remember living.I sat by the clearing my legs tucked beneath me, I listened to the forest speak, for some reason since this whole power was unlocked it felt like the only thing that could heard and understand me clearly with my having to speak was the forest. Malik crouched beside me. “How do you feel?” He asked while his eyes scanned the area we sat at. I chuckled dryly. “Like I survived death but it was still after me?” Malik raised a brow. “I see you hate me now though, how do you anticipate death knowing I know no other funny person?”That got me to laugh genuinely then I turned to look at him. “Listen Malik, i dont say thank you because you are here, everyday I wake up fighting, I survive because
