Eve’s POV

I didn't know what was happening to me. One minute, I was nursing the sharp pain from Mr. Rochester's slap, and the next, a blinding rage overtook me.

My wolf had been contained for the last five years, but today, she refused to stay hidden. But as she wrestled for the second time that day, I knew it was more than her trying to fight for control.

I could feel the power in my hands, ebbing like a ball of fire. My eyes no longer felt like mine, and my toes were digging into the ground. Mr. Rochester's eyes fell wide open. His poor human mind couldn't even begin to comprehend what was happening.

How could he, when even I had no idea?

I tried to stop myself, tried to close my eyes and bring my world under control. But nothing was working.

Someone screamed my name, but it sounded too far away. I took a step closer to the man who was just about to hit me, but I never got close enough as strong arms wrapped themselves around my waist, pulling me away.

“Stop! Let me go!” I thrashed all around him, fighting hard. But his hands only got stronger, pulling until the door closed in front of me. Until I was pushed into the passenger’s seat of his car.

Malik.

He got in behind the wheel and didn’t waste one second pulling out of the driveway and further down the road.

“Malik, let me go!” I screamed, trying the locks of the car. They didn’t budge under my grip. I felt frustration eating at me. But there was something else. Something darker.

“Let me go now!”

“I can’t!” He screams back, increasing the speed of the car. My back slammed hard against the leather seat, and I swayed to the side almost immediately as he took a sharp turn.

He pulled the car off the road and brought it to a halt. I snarled at him, but he didn't even flinch. Most humans would.

"You need to take a deep breath," he whispered, placing a hand on my shoulders. "Look at me, Eve."

It worked. For some reason, staring at him worked. The heat in my core began to reduce, and the excess energy in my bones retracted along with my wolf.

Malik opened the car door, and I stepped out, the evening air whipping my face. It felt nice taking in large gulps of air. I pressed myself against the car and closed my eyes, feeling him standing next to me.

"How long have you been unable to tame her?" His voice settled deep inside me, and my eyes fell open again. I felt better now that I didn't feel like ripping someone's head off.

“What?”

“Your wolf.”

I blink fast. "Wait. How did you… Aren't you…."

“Human?” Malik shook his head. “I guess being here for a while makes it hard to notice.” I watched as he fished for something in his pocket, coming up with a pack of cigarettes. With a stick hanging from his lips, he retrieved a lighter next and watched it burn into the wind.

“What’s your story?”

“I don’t have any,” I muttered, shrugging. “I’m just a lady trying to make ends meet in a new place. Which, by the way, no longer exists because I'm certain Mr. Rochester will want nothing to do with me."

“You scared him to death.” Malik was choking down his laughter. “Did you see his eyes? I thought they were going to fall out of their sockets.”

I chuckled. It felt good to do that, having held a lot of things in for so long. “He deserved it.”

Malik sighed as the sound of my laughter died. He took one more drag from his cigarette before tossing it on the floor. The heel of his boots crushed it in place. "You shouldn't let him treat you like that."

"I don't have other options available to me, and honestly, Mr. Rochester is better than the others who didn't even give me the chance to prove myself. He hits me, but I can still afford to feed myself and…."

Shit. I just almost gave myself away. I allowed the rest of the words to trail into nothingness, and a good part of me thought Malik would question it. But he didn't say anything either, pulling himself out of the car.

“I need to head back now,” he said.

“Right,” I nodded, feeling a strange emotion that had no business with me. I tried to keep my lips sealed, to let today go without an extra hitch.

Instead, I muttered. “You have to go to your girlfriend. She seemed angry from earlier.”

“Morwenna is always angry.”

We got back into the car, the silence settling like fine dust as he pulled back onto the road. He fumbled with the knobs on the dashboard for a while, receiving only static. And then, he gave up.

When we pulled up in front of the café, Mr. Rochester's car was gone. I would only be in for a few minutes, because I knew if I remained there, it wouldn't be as easy as it was the last time. All I had to do was pick up my son and my bag.

“Thank you for today,” I muttered as I rested my hand on the handle. “But you don’t have to come save me anymore. I will look for a job elsewhere and try to stay out of trouble.”

“I don’t think you can,” he said point-blank, regarding me intently, like he could read into my soul.

“I have managed to for the last five years.”

“It’s different now.”

Something about the way he said it made me uneasy. I hooked my thumb on the lock and made to push it open. But his voice made me halt.

“What are you running away from, Eve?”

"Nothing," I said a little too harshly. I pushed the door open and stepped out onto the curb. He didn't stop looking at me.

“You look familiar,” he said, narrowing his eyes even further. “I have met you before.”

“I don’t think…”

“Blackthorn Pack.”

I sucked in a sharp breath.

"I'm from there, too."

  • Moonlight Knows My Name    Chapter 170

Eve’s POV I guess, if I had a reason to speak to someone going through all the drama and hurdles I’ve had to face I already know what to tell them. I may never have the right words to say to them, they may never be able to draw strength from me, because contrary to the general belief, you cannot draw strength from another person except you are now living in that situation yourself. You never know the limit of your own strength or the extent to which you can stretch it except you have faced the demons yourself, we may share similar stories but hardly do we share the same strength so all I would say is, after all has been said and done, the beginning of your story is what you choose to keep at the endThe morning of the mating ceremony arrived without fanfare. There were no horns, no summons through the trees, no elders running around to ensure everything looked impressive enough to be remembered. When I woke up the world felt intentionally quiet, I wanted to believe that Blackthorn it

  • Moonlight Knows My Name    Chapter 169

Malik’s POV There were a lot of things I hated about the natural order of life, but there was once that I never really knew I hated because you just never had the time to prepare or wait for it to happen, it simply just happened, grief…grief was very terrible, heartless even, it never came to you all at once rather it broke you in several pieces of yourself each time you think you are strong enough to move on, to stay strong. Grief doesn’t come all at once. The lie we are told is that, grief crashes over you like a wave and then recedes leaving you gasping but alive at least. The truth is that grief is more quiet than we are made to believe, it’s meaner, it waits until the world has stoppped watching, until you are no longer being carried like an egg by the world, it waits until the house is empty until people no longer took double looks at you to be sure you weren’t going to kill yourself the next minute, it water until everyone assumes the danger has passed, that’s when it comes,

  • Moonlight Knows My Name    Chapter 168

Astrid’s POV To an extent, I always thought confession felt more like relief, you know just finally and fully breathing after a long long time. I thought a confession was nothing sort of a door opening, like freedom, I think what I’m trying to say it, when I did this I thought it would feel like exposing my injury to air after years of complete rot. But I was wrong, confession was nothing like I thought it would be,realistically it felt like standing naked in winter stripped of not just lies but the armour the lies became. It felt like choosing to bleed where everyone could see and knowing that in the end some wounds never closed. The pack summoned at dawn by what I felt was instinct or what had happened the previous day, or maybe it was because since Morwenna’s death, it had felt like even the land had been trying hard to hold its breath. Wolves stood shoulder to shoulder at the clearing, they looked exhausted, while some had angry looks for reasons best known to them, others looke

  • Moonlight Knows My Name    Chapter 167

Eve’s POV Dorian eventually arrived, turns out Morwenna had kept him in her captivity all this time, waiting for the right time to end him, how he escaped was something we all knew we may never get to know. The ground soon straightened beneath our feet, wolves quickly straightened as well even those wounded and too exhausted to stand In no time, Morwenna regained a part of her strength then she turned to Dorian, her lips curling into a sinister smile. “So” she says with contempt. “I see the Alpha finally chose to stand.”Dorian does not answer her at first, rather his gaze flicks to Malik on the ground, fury and resolute settle behind his eyes when he looks back at her “I should have ended this long ago, how did I not read between lines, I knew there had always been something odd about you, why did I ignore my instincts?” He said, moving angrily to her What followed next was a battle that soon turned into a final ending, Morwenna lashed out with everything she had left, I was marve

  • Moonlight Knows My Name    Chapter 166

Eve’s POV After my long monologue, the next thing I felt was fire racing across the pack grounds in a violent rush, it wasn’t your usual flame type…no, there was absolutely nothing natural about it, it burned blue-white at the core, edged with black. It devoured wards like paper, literally licked up wooden structures in less than a heart beat, it scorched all that stood in its way down to bones, wolves scampered around for safety, shouting and dragging their little ones, before one could process the escalation of event, the injured among us were already being shoved towards the tree lines. And at the center of it, fanning and directing was Morwenna, our nemesis. Her arms were spread wide, her head thrown back, her mouth opened in what was supposed to be laughter as magic poured from her like blood from an open wound.“So much for your beautiful speech, Eve.” She laughed even harder. “If things won’t go my way, if I can’t have my own peace, then none of you will!”I felt my wolf reco

  • Moonlight Knows My Name    Chapter 165

Eve’s POV The screams in my head first began to fade, then the pounding of blood in my ears slowed too retreating into manageable sounds, what remained was the sound of my own heartbeat, reminding me that I was still here alive and present. I was still on the floor, only that I was now on my knees with my palms pressed to the earth as if the ground itself was the only thing anchoring me, the soil now felt cold but beneath it was as though I was being watched. My wolf did not rage, neither did she claw or snarl nor demand any form of release. Instead she waited, and that was what terrified me more than anything else that was happening. Around me the pack stood frozen, elders and warriors and mothers clutching their children closer than usual. Malik was somewhere to my left, I could feel him before I even saw him, some sort of familiar gravity pulling at my awareness, he was wounded, blood against his shirt but he still stood upright, refusing to fall or to leave. Morwenna stood at t
