Eve’s POV

I didn't know what was happening to me. One minute, I was nursing the sharp pain from Mr. Rochester's slap, and the next, a blinding rage overtook me.

My wolf had been contained for the last five years, but today, she refused to stay hidden. But as she wrestled for the second time that day, I knew it was more than her trying to fight for control.

I could feel the power in my hands, ebbing like a ball of fire. My eyes no longer felt like mine, and my toes were digging into the ground. Mr. Rochester's eyes fell wide open. His poor human mind couldn't even begin to comprehend what was happening.

How could he, when even I had no idea?

I tried to stop myself, tried to close my eyes and bring my world under control. But nothing was working.

Someone screamed my name, but it sounded too far away. I took a step closer to the man who was just about to hit me, but I never got close enough as strong arms wrapped themselves around my waist, pulling me away.

“Stop! Let me go!” I thrashed all around him, fighting hard. But his hands only got stronger, pulling until the door closed in front of me. Until I was pushed into the passenger’s seat of his car.

Malik.

He got in behind the wheel and didn’t waste one second pulling out of the driveway and further down the road.

“Malik, let me go!” I screamed, trying the locks of the car. They didn’t budge under my grip. I felt frustration eating at me. But there was something else. Something darker.

“Let me go now!”

“I can’t!” He screams back, increasing the speed of the car. My back slammed hard against the leather seat, and I swayed to the side almost immediately as he took a sharp turn.

He pulled the car off the road and brought it to a halt. I snarled at him, but he didn't even flinch. Most humans would.

"You need to take a deep breath," he whispered, placing a hand on my shoulders. "Look at me, Eve."

It worked. For some reason, staring at him worked. The heat in my core began to reduce, and the excess energy in my bones retracted along with my wolf.

Malik opened the car door, and I stepped out, the evening air whipping my face. It felt nice taking in large gulps of air. I pressed myself against the car and closed my eyes, feeling him standing next to me.

"How long have you been unable to tame her?" His voice settled deep inside me, and my eyes fell open again. I felt better now that I didn't feel like ripping someone's head off.

“What?”

“Your wolf.”

I blink fast. "Wait. How did you… Aren't you…."

“Human?” Malik shook his head. “I guess being here for a while makes it hard to notice.” I watched as he fished for something in his pocket, coming up with a pack of cigarettes. With a stick hanging from his lips, he retrieved a lighter next and watched it burn into the wind.

“What’s your story?”

“I don’t have any,” I muttered, shrugging. “I’m just a lady trying to make ends meet in a new place. Which, by the way, no longer exists because I'm certain Mr. Rochester will want nothing to do with me."

“You scared him to death.” Malik was choking down his laughter. “Did you see his eyes? I thought they were going to fall out of their sockets.”

I chuckled. It felt good to do that, having held a lot of things in for so long. “He deserved it.”

Malik sighed as the sound of my laughter died. He took one more drag from his cigarette before tossing it on the floor. The heel of his boots crushed it in place. "You shouldn't let him treat you like that."

"I don't have other options available to me, and honestly, Mr. Rochester is better than the others who didn't even give me the chance to prove myself. He hits me, but I can still afford to feed myself and…."

Shit. I just almost gave myself away. I allowed the rest of the words to trail into nothingness, and a good part of me thought Malik would question it. But he didn't say anything either, pulling himself out of the car.

“I need to head back now,” he said.

“Right,” I nodded, feeling a strange emotion that had no business with me. I tried to keep my lips sealed, to let today go without an extra hitch.

Instead, I muttered. “You have to go to your girlfriend. She seemed angry from earlier.”

“Morwenna is always angry.”

We got back into the car, the silence settling like fine dust as he pulled back onto the road. He fumbled with the knobs on the dashboard for a while, receiving only static. And then, he gave up.

When we pulled up in front of the café, Mr. Rochester's car was gone. I would only be in for a few minutes, because I knew if I remained there, it wouldn't be as easy as it was the last time. All I had to do was pick up my son and my bag.

“Thank you for today,” I muttered as I rested my hand on the handle. “But you don’t have to come save me anymore. I will look for a job elsewhere and try to stay out of trouble.”

“I don’t think you can,” he said point-blank, regarding me intently, like he could read into my soul.

“I have managed to for the last five years.”

“It’s different now.”

Something about the way he said it made me uneasy. I hooked my thumb on the lock and made to push it open. But his voice made me halt.

“What are you running away from, Eve?”

"Nothing," I said a little too harshly. I pushed the door open and stepped out onto the curb. He didn't stop looking at me.

“You look familiar,” he said, narrowing his eyes even further. “I have met you before.”

“I don’t think…”

“Blackthorn Pack.”

I sucked in a sharp breath.

"I'm from there, too."

  • Moonlight Knows My Name    Chapter 110

Eve’s POV Malik calmed a little after a while although the bags under his eyes now looked heavier, Dorian now stood a few feets away, not sure why but my anxiety became something I could almost touch.None of us spoke, it didn't feel like silence, rather it felt like a delicate stitching of everything we didn’t know how to say. Finally, Dorian moved away from the spot he had been on, his steps quickened towards us. “At this point, it fees like we are basing everything based off words, or old tales.” He said in a low voice. “We can’t keep guessing, all these aren’t enough to proof anyone’s guilt. I exhaled heavily. “But everything leads back to her, how do we explain that?” “Leads back,” Dorian repeated, “it doesn’t prove anything.” A very valid distinction though. He was right, no matter how obvious and clear the signs were, they were still just signs, nothing but mere assumptions. My heart thudded against my ribs as I said the disappointing realization out loud. “There were no

Eve’s POVMalik sat on the edge of the pavement we usually sat on, his shoulders slumped, his fingers hitting on each other in frustration. The wind tugged at his hair but he didn’t even notice, he was staring deep into distance, his eyes dark and hollow. I had seen angry, fierce and unyielding in battle, but this? This looked different, it was grief mixed with guilt and it hurt to watch“Malik,” I said, walking towards him. He didn’t turn at first, he just kept staring at nothing like he was trying to burn out the images in his head. “Hey, look at me.” He turned, his eyes sad and dark. “Eve,” his voice came out hoarse, I felt my heart twist. “I should have seen it sooner, I should have known but I failed.”I took a seat beside him, letting my hand brush against his. “ you wouldn’t have known, you didnt fail.” He shook his head. “I should have sensed the evil she carried sooner. All this time Eve, all this time, Morwenna had been behind it all, I was so blind, I couldn’t save us fr

  • Moonlight Knows My Name    Chapter 108

Eve’s POVI glanced at Malik, walking beside me, his posture tense, jaw tight. He hadn’t said much since we left her house. The forest felt quiet as we made our way back from Morwenna’s dwelling. My wolf was restless, pressing close beneath my skin, sensing the unease that hung around Morwenna, the way I felt around her isn’t something that only randomly started now for a while now I’ve had this uneasy feeling, my every instinct screamed that something was off, but I couldn’t put my finger on it.Meanwhile, Dorian still carried his detached demeanor. He walked ahead of was his eyes scanning the forest. Meanwhile, I had noticed that for a while now, Dorian had given me and Malik more space than we ever could have asked for, it was like he was actively trying to meet up to a certain vow or promise , i was sure he made himself. It was relieving yet. It was crazy to imagine how you could be strangers to someone who once meant the whole world to you, not like I regretted any of these, bu

  • Moonlight Knows My Name    Chapter 107

Eve’s POVThe forest seemed sadly the same as we made our way back from Malik’s mother’s house. Dorian met us somewhere along the way, obviously anticipating some good news. But we had none, we didn’t need to speak, looking at each other’s faces was enough, as for him, I had learned to trust his instincts, but right now, his presence felt like an echo of the storm we had just faced, he was carrying the weight of a leader and protector, “We need answers,” Malik muttered suddenly, breaking the silence. His voice was low. “Everything keeps pointing back to someone, and we keep running in circles. We can’t keep guessing, Eve. Morwenna sees things whenever she wants, let’s go talk to her, see what is revealed to her about this situation.”I nodded slowly, my hands clenching together. “You’re right,” I whispered. “She might know something…anything that can help us stop this curse before it destroys everything.”I looked over to Dorian but he just shrugged in agreement, I didn’t want to li

  • Moonlight Knows My Name    Chapter 106

Eve’s POVNext on our list was a trip to see Malik’s mother because Malik felt she might know something. The journey here was scary, how does one even begin to explain to her. Malik’s hands held mine and squeezed lightly like he could read my thoughts. “We are okay.” He whispered softly. “Are you sure this is…right?” I asked quietly, “It’s the only lead we have.” He said. “I fee strongly that she would know something that may change the whole thing for us.” The house appeared ahead of us, as we got to the door. Malik knocked once and then again, the door opened to beautiful, her back though stiff and her stance rigid like she didn’t want us there, I knew this was such a bad idea. The air immediately became heavy with tension, I could feel every heartbeat in my chest sync with what I imagined to be the sound of pulse of tension in the house. Her voice cut through my thought like a blade. “What are you doing?”Malik stepped forward. “Hello to you too, mother.” He said pulling my ha

  • Moonlight Knows My Name    Chapter 105

Eve’s POVMalik glanced back at me,“You feeling ready for this?” he asked.I swallowed, letting my wolf stretch beneath my skin, feeling its power hum in response to the energy in the forest. “I think I am,” I said slowly, my fingers brushing against the markings on my arm. “Eve…” Malik’s voice pulled me from whatever trance i was entering. “Something is near, stay close.” I tensed. The wolf in my flaring at the warning, my claws itched to strike, my teeth needed to defend, yet I forced myself to stay calm. Every heartbeat and pulse reminded me that I was way more than the Eve I was used to. The scent we were following grew stronger, it wasn’t magic, it was fear, not ours though but we could sense that as well, it was fear from a different place, tangled with layers of manipulation. I thought to myself, what if all the times I felt we were being watched by the forest, it wasn’t actually the forest but we were being watched or followed“Here,” Malik whispered pausing by a tree. I kn
